Notizen: Dynamic responses of magnetic hysteresis loops in a few monolayer (ML) thick Co/Cu(001) films were studied using surface magneto-optic Kerr effect (SMOKE). For a fixed external field strength H0, the hysteresis loop area increases as a function of frequency with a power law and reaches a maximum at a resonance frequency Ω0. This Ω0 depends on the external periodic field strength as well as the thickness and roughness of the films. The thickness and roughness parameters were measured quantitatively using high-resolution low-energy electron diffraction. For a fixed film thickness, the Ω0 in the low field region is highly dependent on H0, which is consistent with the prediction from the mean field model. For two Co films with an equivalent thickness but different degrees of film roughness, the resonance frequency Ω0 is lower for the rougher films in all the field strengths studied. For a fixed field strength, the value of Ω0 decreases as Co film roughness increases in a few ML regime. The roughness dependency in Ω0 indicates that the slowing down in the magnetization reversal process is due to the increased film roughness. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Fabrication and characterization of YBa2Cu3Oy Josephson junctions with step-edge, bi-epitaxial, and sandwich geometries are performed in this study to investigate the effects of microwave irradiation on the I–V characteristics. I–V curves under microwave irradiation reveal Shapiro steps. The width of the constant voltage steps were modulated by the microwave power. The period of the magnetic induction ΔB detected from the V–Φ curves for superconducting quantum interference devices is temperature dependent. Additionally, Tc and Ic of the proximity sandwich junctions are enhanced by the microwave irradiation. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Neutron-diffraction and ac-susceptibility measurements have been performed to study the effects of Ga doping on the magnetic ordering of the Pr in PrBa2(Cu1−xGax)3O7. The Ga atoms preferentially replace the Cu atoms in the CuO-chain layers, and this substitution is found to decrease the antiferromagnetic ordering temperature as the Ga concentration is increased. In addition, the spin arrangement along the c axis is found to change from nearest neighbors being antiparallel for x=0 to nearest neighbors being parallel for x=0.08 (24% Cu chain substitution); for an intermediate x of 0.04 a mixture of the two spin structures is observed. The susceptibility results exhibit Curie–Weiss behavior above TN, and departures from this behavior in the ordered state.

Notizen: Neutron diffraction techniques have been used to investigate the magnetic ordering of the Tb ions in polycrystalline Pb2Sr2TbCu3O8. Significant magnetic correlations are found to develop below ∼10 K, and these correlations are two dimensional in nature, representative of the strongly anisotropic magnetic interactions in these layered materials. The correlation length increases with decreasing temperature, and long-range order is observed to develop at TN≈5.5 K. However, the sawtooth Bragg profile for the scattering demonstrates that the long-range order is two dimensional, rather than three dimensional, with a spin configuration where nearest-neighbor spins are antiparallel. The scattering profile can be explained quantitatively by assuming long-range order within the ab plane, with no significant correlations along the c axis to the lowest temperatures measured (1.36 K). Our results suggest that the system is well described by a two-dimensional Ising model. The only other (pure) system where a crossover to three-dimensional behavior is not observed is DyBa2Cu4O8.

Notizen: We report the direct observation of silicon nanocrystals in unannealed siloxene using high resolution transmission electron microscopy. The microstructure consists of an amorphous matrix plus silicon crystallites with dimensions of a few nanometers. This is additional evidence that the photoluminescence of silicon-based materials is due to quantum confinement.

Notizen: This article reports the effect of Al doping into MnBiSi films on the structure and magneto-optical properties of the parent. Under suitable Al doping, the x-ray diffraction peaks of (002) and (004) move to a larger 2aitch-theta value related to that of MnBiSi. Moreover, two satellite peaks appear beside the main (002) and (004) peaks of MnBiAlSi. Such structural distortion due to Al doping results in an increased Kerr rotation angle, an effective perpendicular anisotropy constant Ku, as well as improvement of the thermal stability of MnBiSi.

Notizen: The magnetic response of the Tb spins in Pb2Sr2TbCu3O7 to the applied magnetic field have been studied by ac susceptibility measurements. Both the in-phase component χ′ and the out-of-phase component χ″ of ac susceptibility are found to be sensitive to the frequency but not to the strength of the driving field. At high temperatures χ′ exhibits Curie–Weiss behavior, it departs from this behavior as the magnetic correlations between the Tb spins develop, and a cusp which is typical of antiferromagnetic ordering is clearly revealed at lower temperatures. The correlated Tb spins respond "better'' to a driving magnetic field which has a lower frequency. The relative maximum of the dχ′/dT versus T plot matches to the TN determined using neutron diffraction measurements. This relative maximum continues to occur at the same temperature as the frequency of the driving field is varied. It, however, shifts to a lower temperature as a dc external field is applied, indicating the antiferromagnetic coupling between the Tb spins are weaken by the dc field. Moreover, the thermal behavior of χ″ exhibits a well-defined peak around the transition temperature, and a dc field of strength 5 kOe smears the peak. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Static thermomagnetic recording on MnBiAl films at 633 nm is reported. The intrinsic Kerr rotation of the sample investigated is 1.8° at 633 nm. A 14 mW pulsed laser was used to write stable domains with diameter of 1.2 μm under zero external applied magnetic field, and a 12 mW pulsed laser was utilized to erase the recorded domains using an external field 600 Oe. The direct observation of the homogeneously recorded domain arrays of 16×22 points on an area of approximately 0.01 mm2 shows that they possess a very good circular configuration, distinct margin, and a very high contrast between "0'', "1'' states due to large Kerr rotation θk and coercivity Hc. The number of write/erase cycles on MnBiAl is over 106 times, which is a significant improvement over the 103 times possible with MnBi. Measurements demonstrate that MnBiAl film is a promising magneto-optical recording medium. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: We report a systematic modification of thin YBa2Cu3Oy films with a scanning tunneling microscope. The samples include YBa2Cu3Oy films on MgO(001) and YBa2Cu3Oy/PrBa2Cu3Oy bilayer films on SrTiO3 (001). The bias voltage of the tip was kept negative and varied from −600 to −1200 mV. The tip was operated in a constant tunneling current mode with tunneling current 0.3–0.7 nA and scanning rate 1 Hz. Modification of the surface begins with nucleation of holes, or at the edge of a dislocation or protrusion on the surface, and is achieved by successively scanning a fixed area. We show the image obtained from an atomic force microscope which can help us look into the mechanism of the modification.
