    Notes: Polarized and unpolarized neutron scattering techniques along with x-ray diffraction have been used to study the magnetic and structural properties of a single crystal of Nd2CuO4. Long-range magnetic order of the Cu moments develops at TN=245 K, with a simple antiferromagnetic configuration of spins as found in La2NiO4, while the spin directions may be either collinear or noncollinear. Additional abrupt transitions are observed at 75 and 30 K, in which spin reorientations take place. Bragg peaks associated with the crystal structure are found at the same positions as the magnetic Bragg peaks, and indicate that a small distortion of the basic tetragonal structure has occurred above 300 K. At low temperatures the Nd moments also order antiferromagnetically (TN=1.5 K), while an additional transition of a continuous nature is observed at 150 mK.

    Notes: Neutron diffraction and ac magnetic susceptibility measurements have been performed to study the magnetic ordering of the Mn spins in polycrystalline Nd0.45Ca0.55MnO3. Three peaks around 260, 90, and 40 K were observed in the temperature dependence of the ac susceptibility. Structural analysis using high-resolution neutron diffraction patterns shows that the peak at 260 K is associated with the charge ordering of the Mn ions. Neutron magnetic diffraction shows that the peak at 90 K originates from the ordering of the Mn spins. Both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic couplings between the Mn spins were found. The spin structure in the basal plane consists of tilted ferromagnetic chains (along the [110] direction) aligned antiferromagnetically, whereas the interlayer coupling is ferromagnetic. A spin reorientation occurs below 15 K, which results in a change in the title angle. The Mn spins order at TN(approximate)120 K, and the moment saturated at 30 K at 〈μZ〉=2.29(4)μB. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The crystal structure and magnetic ordering of the Mn spins in polycrystalline NdMnO3 have been investigated by means of neutron diffraction and ac magnetic susceptibility measurements. The compound crystallizes into an orthorhombic symmetry of space group Pbnm. Three peaks were observed in the temperature dependence of the in-phase component of the ac susceptibility, χ′(T). Neutron diffraction measurements show that all three peaks observed in χ′(T) are of magnetic origin, and are associated with the ordering and the reorientation of the Mn spins. Both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic couplings between the Mn spins were observed, resulting in a noncollinear magnetic structure. The Mn spins order at Tm(approximate)75 K, and the moment saturates at ∼20 K at 〈μz〉=2.21 μB. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The magnetic response of the Tb spins in Pb2Sr2TbCu3O7 to the applied magnetic field have been studied by ac susceptibility measurements. Both the in-phase component χ′ and the out-of-phase component χ″ of ac susceptibility are found to be sensitive to the frequency but not to the strength of the driving field. At high temperatures χ′ exhibits Curie–Weiss behavior, it departs from this behavior as the magnetic correlations between the Tb spins develop, and a cusp which is typical of antiferromagnetic ordering is clearly revealed at lower temperatures. The correlated Tb spins respond "better'' to a driving magnetic field which has a lower frequency. The relative maximum of the dχ′/dT versus T plot matches to the TN determined using neutron diffraction measurements. This relative maximum continues to occur at the same temperature as the frequency of the driving field is varied. It, however, shifts to a lower temperature as a dc external field is applied, indicating the antiferromagnetic coupling between the Tb spins are weaken by the dc field. Moreover, the thermal behavior of χ″ exhibits a well-defined peak around the transition temperature, and a dc field of strength 5 kOe smears the peak. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Neutron diffraction techniques have been used to investigate the magnetic ordering of the Tb ions in polycrystalline Pb2Sr2TbCu3O8. Significant magnetic correlations are found to develop below ∼10 K, and these correlations are two dimensional in nature, representative of the strongly anisotropic magnetic interactions in these layered materials. The correlation length increases with decreasing temperature, and long-range order is observed to develop at TN≈5.5 K. However, the sawtooth Bragg profile for the scattering demonstrates that the long-range order is two dimensional, rather than three dimensional, with a spin configuration where nearest-neighbor spins are antiparallel. The scattering profile can be explained quantitatively by assuming long-range order within the ab plane, with no significant correlations along the c axis to the lowest temperatures measured (1.36 K). Our results suggest that the system is well described by a two-dimensional Ising model. The only other (pure) system where a crossover to three-dimensional behavior is not observed is DyBa2Cu4O8.

    Notes: The Cu spins in TlBa2PrCu2O7 order at TN≈370 K with a spin structure that is collinear and is characterized by the {1/21/21} wave vector, where the nearest neighbor spins are aligned antiparallel along all three crystallographic directions. If 50% of the Ba atoms are randomly replaced by the smaller Sr atoms to form Tl(BaSr)PrCu2O7, the TN of the Cu spins reduces to 350 K but the magnetic structure that forms below TN is the same. However, at T≈20 K the Cu spins undergo a change in structure, and the spin arrangement is then characterized by the {1/21/21/2} wave vector below T≈12 K. The ground state spin structure of the Cu ions in Tl(BaSr)PrCu2O7 is hence noncollinear, where the spin directions of the nearest neighbor Cu ions in the ab plane remain collinear and antiparallel while along the c axis they are orthogonal. These results demonstrate that the atoms in the BaO layers are also actively participating in the coupling between the Cu ions. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The magnetic ordering of the Pr ions in Pb2Sr2PrCu3O8 has been studied using neutron-diffraction and ac-suspectibility measurements. An imperfect three-dimensional magnetic ordering of the Pr spins was observed at a temperature well below its Neel temperature of TN≈7 K. The magnetic intensities observed at T=1.4 K can be explained by assuming long-range order in the ab plane with short-range correlations, of correlation length ξc=20 A(ring), along the c axis and a moment directed along the c-axis direction. The magnetic ordering is 2D in nature, and the basic magnetic structure consists of nearest-neighbor spins that are aligned antiparallel along all three crystallographic directions. The magnetic transition is also evident in the ac-susceptibility versus temperature measurements, where a cusp that is typical of antiferromagnetic ordering is clearly observed, which matches the TN obtained by neutron diffraction.

    Notes: Neutron-diffraction and ac-susceptibility measurements have been performed to study the effects of Ga doping on the magnetic ordering of the Pr in PrBa2(Cu1−xGax)3O7. The Ga atoms preferentially replace the Cu atoms in the CuO-chain layers, and this substitution is found to decrease the antiferromagnetic ordering temperature as the Ga concentration is increased. In addition, the spin arrangement along the c axis is found to change from nearest neighbors being antiparallel for x=0 to nearest neighbors being parallel for x=0.08 (24% Cu chain substitution); for an intermediate x of 0.04 a mixture of the two spin structures is observed. The susceptibility results exhibit Curie–Weiss behavior above TN, and departures from this behavior in the ordered state.

    Notes: The crystal structure of polycrystalline PbBaSrPrCu3O8 was studied using high resolution neutron diffraction. Rietveld refinement of the diffraction pattern shows that the compound crystallizes into the Tl2Ba2YCu2O8 2212-type structure. The Pb and Cu atoms in the two (Pb,Cu)O layers are randomly mixed to form two (Pb0.5Cu0.5)O layers, and the Ba and Sr atoms are also randomly mixed to form two (Ba0.5Sr0.5)O layers, resulting in (Pb0.5Cu0.5)2(Ba0.5Sr0.5)2PrCu2O8. The magnetic ordering of the Pr ions was also studied using magnetic neutron diffraction and ac susceptibility measurements. At low temperatures, magnetic peaks presumably originating from the Pr spin ordering were observed at the {1/2 1/2 1/2 1/2}, {1/2 1/2 3/2}, and {1/2 1/2 5/2} positions. The Pr spins order at TN(approximate)9 K with the moment direction along the c axis and the nearest-neighbor spins coupled antiferromagnetically. A cusp associated with the antiferromagnetic ordering at TN is also clearly observed in ac susceptibility measurements. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The influence of annealed proton exchanged (APE) waveguides on domain inversion in Z-cut LiNbO3 is reported. For this study, pyrophosphoric acid is used to fabricate planar APE waveguides, both before and after creating domain inversion through the application of an external electric field at room temperature. Domain inversion produced in this manner is shown to sustain the APE process. However, domain inversion is not producible in portions of the substrates having APE waveguides on both crystal faces. The implication of this result for integrated optic device fabrication is discussed. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.
