Notes: A simple design for a mechanically driven three-dimensional cryogenic micropositioner is presented. The design is based on a parallelogram structure constructed from leaf springs and wires. Actuation is achieved by the elastic deformation of the parallelogram by screws. Positions within a volume of roughly (2 mm)3 are attainable. The precision and reproducibility of positioning are in the μm-range. The deviations from linearity are smaller than 10% for the whole working range and the deviation from orthogonality is smaller than 3°. Calibration measurements performed on a Cu-mesh with a lattice constant of 60 μm are presented. In an experiment investigating the ballistic transport of carriers in the semimetal Bi, two such devices are used. The first one is used as a scanning unit for an optical fiber and the second one is used as micropositioner for a Cu point contact. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Analysis of the leading nonlinear term of the susceptibility χ3(T) of the singlet-ground-state heavy-fermion superconductor UPd2Al3 shows evidence for a jump at TN and a "third-order'' Curie–Weiss type behavior at higher temperatures, inferring quadrupolar or magnetoelastic interactions. These effects are closely related to quadrupolar correlations observed in measurements of the nonlinear susceptibility and calculated in a crystal-electric-field approach for the singlet-ground-state systems URu2Si2 and PrNi5 .

Notes: The properties of diphencyprone (DPC), its possible mechanism of action in the therapy of alopecia areata (AA), and its side-effects are summarized. The results of our own study of treatment in 45 patients with AA, with a mean treatment duration of 72 (15–146) weeks, are presented, and compared with the results of previous studies. We suggest that, in future, therapy protocols should define entry criteria and therapy results more precisely, and include follow-up assessments to establish the length of remission. In view of the low response rates and short lengths of remission, the indications for DPC therapy should be set more rigorously.
