    Notizen: Highly supersaturated nanocrystalline FexCu100−x alloys (10≤x≤95) have been prepared by mechanical alloying of elemental crystalline powders. The development of the microstructure is investigated by x-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, and transmission electron microscopy. The results are compared with data for ball-milled elemental Fe and Cu powders, samples prepared by inert gas condensation, and sputtered films. The deformation during milling reduces the grain size of the alloys to 6–20 nm. The final grain size of the powders depends on the composition of the material. Single-phase fcc alloys with x≤60 and single-phase bcc alloys with x≥80 are formed even though the Fe-Cu system exhibits vanishingly small solid solubilities under equilibrium conditions. For 60≤x≤80, fcc and bcc solid solutions coexist. The alloy formation is discussed with respect to the thermodynamic conditions of the material. The role of the large volume fraction of grain boundaries between the nanometer-sized crystals, as well as the influence of internal strains and stored enthalpies introduced by ball milling, is critically assessed.

    Notizen: X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry were used to study the thermal stability of highly supersaturated nanocrystalline FexCu100−x alloys (10≤x≤95) synthesized by mechanical alloying. Alloys with x〈60 exhibit single-phase fcc structure while single-phase bcc alloys form for x(approximately-greater-than)80. For 60≤x≤80 fcc and bcc phases coexist. Heating to elevated temperatures leads to structural relaxation, phase separation, and grain growth of the metastable nanocrystalline solid solutions. Single-phase fcc and bcc alloys undergo significant strain release but no appreciable grain growth prior to phase separation. After phase separation pronounced grain growth sets in. In contrast, samples in the two-phase region show some grain growth and significant chemical redistribution even at low temperatures. The phase separation of single-phase fcc and bcc alloys proceeds via different mechanisms: fcc solid solutions decompose by forming small Fe precipitates, while demixing in bcc alloys starts by segregation of Cu atoms to bcc grain boundaries before nucleation of Cu precipitates. These results show that the stability and grain growth behavior of nanocrystalline alloys is strongly affected by the microstructure of the material.

    Notizen: We report the magnetic properties of the icosahedral phase (i phase) in rapidly quenched Ti-Mn based alloys. Ribbons of i-phase samples of composition Ti61Mn37Si2, Ti61Mn22Cr15Si2, Ti61Mn22Fe15Si2, and Ti61Mn22Co15Si2 were prepared by melt spinning onto a copper disk in an argon atmosphere. Low-field magnetization data reveal a ferromagnetic ordering at Tc (approximately-equal-to) 40 K for Ti61Mn37Si2 samples. A partial substitution of Mn by Cr enhances Tc to 58 K with large thermal hysteresis, whereas samples of composition Ti61Mn22Fe15Si2 show no long-range magnetic ordering down to 4 K. We have found that the sample Ti61Mn22Co15Si2 shows evidence of spin-glass behavior below 15 K.

    Notizen: A new apparatus for making in situ measurements of changes in the electrical resistivity accompanying phase transformations in metallic alloys is presented. Measurements can be made in vacuum or inert gas at annealing temperatures as high as 1500 K. The long-term thermal stability is better than ±0.3 K. The measurement circuit is stable to better than 0.01% over any time scale. This apparatus provides a relatively simple and inexpensive means for obtaining high temperature resistivity measurements on very brittle samples.

    Notizen: The yttrium–sialon ceramics with the composition of Y0.333Si10Al2ON15 and an excess addition of Y2O3 (2 or 5 wt%) were fabricated by hot isostatic press (HIP) sintering at 1800°C for 1 h. The resulting materials were subsequently heat-treated in the temperature range 1300–1900°C to investigate its effect on the α→β-sialon phase transformation, the morphology of α-sialon grains, and mechanical properties. The results show that α-sialons stabilized by yttrium have high thermal stability. An adjustment of the α-sialon phase composition is the dominating reaction in the investigated Y–α-sialon ceramics during low-temperature annealing. Incorporation of excess Y2O3 could effectively promote the formation of elongated α-sialon grains during post-heat-treating at relatively higher temperature (1700° and 1900°C) and hence resulted in a high fracture toughness (KIC= 6.3 MPa·m1/2) via grain debonding and pullout effects. Although the addition of 5 wt% Y2O3 could promote the growth of elongated α grains with a higher aspect ratio, the higher liquid-phase content increased the interfacial bonding strength and therefore hindered interface debonding and crack deflection. The heat treatment at 1500°C significantly changed the morphology of α-sialon grains from elongated to equiaxed and hence decreased its toughness.

    Notizen: Filamentous tau protein deposits are a pathological hallmark of a group of neurodegenerative disorders (tauopathies). Tau protein in these aggregates is highly phosphorylated at different phosphorylation sites. Although tau filaments can be formed by heparin-induced aggregation of unphosphorylated recombinant tau, it is not known how tau phosphorylation modulates aggregation behaviour. Analysis of the effect of tau phosphorylation at defined single or multiple sites is hampered by the low specificity of protein kinases and the highly dynamic turnover of phosphorylation in vivo. To overcome this problem we employed site-directed mutagenesis to convert serine and threonine to aspartic acid or glutamic acid, which introduce a negative charge and conformational change that mimic phosphorylation. We tested 14 different mutated tau proteins for their propensity for self-aggregation and formation of tau filaments. Tau aggregation was monitored with thioflavin S fluorescence in the presence of different inducers such as heparin, Al3+, Fe2+ and Fe3+. We found that mutations in the N-terminal portion up to amino acid 208 mainly suppress tau aggregation, whereas mutations in the C-terminal region mainly lead to an enhanced aggregation. Mutations in the middle portion of tau showed a mixed picture of suppression and enhancement of aggregation. A single amino acid change Ser422Glu has aggregation-favouring properties with all four inducers.
