    Notizen: This paper reports on the completion of a new type of magnetometer for personal magnetic field dosimetry.1,2 The instrument is a small 15 cm×10 cm×2.5 cm device which can be worn by the user. It utilizes the magnetostrictive response of a Tb–Dy–Fe sensor to measure the prevailing ac magnetic field amplitude. The results are stored using an on-board microprocessor which then integrates the field values to determine the total exposure ∫ Hmax(ω) dt over a given time period. The performance of this new device is reported for a range of ac field frequencies from 10 Hz to 30 kHz. It has been found that the sensitivity of the device is greatly enhanced by using a localized 16 kA/m dc bias field to operate the sensor at the condition of highest dλ/dH. The device can detect fields down the 5 μ T range, and by suitable signal processing, has been designed to give an output signal in both field amplitude and frequency. The device contains a rugged laser diode interferometer of the type used in compact disk audio systems, an AlNiCo permanent magnet to provide the bias field and a Tb0.3Dy0.7Fe1.9 magnetostrictive alloy sensors with strain amplitudes up to 1000 ppm.

    Notizen: The relative conversion efficiency of laser energy into x radiation in the range of about 0.8–5.5 keV was investigated as a function of irradiance for planar Cu targets. For two laser pulse durations at two wavelengths—100 ps / 670 ps at a wavelength of 1054 nm and 70 ps/470 ps at 527 nm—the requirements on the laser parameters for good conversion efficiency were established.

    Notizen: Dynamic light scattering (DLS) measurements on aqueous solutions of rodlike fd-virus particles (length=880 nm, diameter=9 nm) below and above the overlap concentration c*=1 particle/length3 are reported. In samples with screened Coulomb interaction the short-time behavior of the time correlation functions does not show a significant concentration dependence, in contrast to samples at very low ionic strength (strong Coulomb interaction), where the short-time behavior is dominated by the static structure factor S(q). In this case S(q) derived by DLS methods, using an equation that has been proved for interacting spherical particles and weakly interacting rods, is in excellent agreement with S(q) determined by static light scattering (SLS) up to a particle concentration of about 5c*. Above significant deviations are found. At very low ionic strength the existence of a distinct very long tail in the time correlation function as previously reported can be confirmed, but the new experiments suggest that this is due to dust particles and aggregates and not to the interaction between the fd particles.

    Notizen: Light scattering experiments are reported on semidilute, aqueous solutions of rod-like fd-virus (length L=880 nm, molecular weight 16.4×106 dalton) near the overlap concentration c*=1 particle/length3. In solutions of very low ionic strength, a liquid-like structure with a significant intensity maximum of the elastically scattered light is observed. The structure is caused by the electrostatic interaction of the charged rods. It vanishes, when enough salt is added so that the interaction potential is screened on the interparticle distance. The scattering vector qmax of the maximum scales with the fd concentration as c1/2. The experimental values for qmaxL fit very well to Monto Carlo simulations if the concentration is scaled to c*. Dynamic light scattering of the fd solutions reflects the influence of the static structure factor in the same way as observed for interacting spherical macromolecules: The first cumulant of the field correlation function divided by the square of the scattering vector shows a behavior reciprocal to that of the static structure factor.

    Notizen: Abstract: A significant proportion of the acetylcholinesterase that is present in the electric organ of Torpedo californica exists as a presynaptic membrane molecule. The monoclonal antibody Tor 23 binds the Torpedo presynaptic nerve membrane where it recognizes a polypeptide of 68,000 daltons. Our present studies indicate that Tor 23 identifies acetylcholinesterase. From the homogenates of Torpedo nerve terminals, Tor 23 immunoprecipitates measurable esterase activity. Esterase precipitation was not observed with no Tor 23 added; nor was it observed with any other test antibodies, including other Tor antibodies, in particular, Tor 70, which binds, as does Tor 23, to the presynaptic nerve membrane. The esterase activity was specific for acetylcholinesterase. Our studies indicate the molecule defined by Tor 23 has the solubility properties described for that of presynaptic acetylcholinesterase: it is soluble in detergent-treated electroplax homogenates and insoluble in high-salt extractions. In sections of Torpedo back muscle, both nerve and endplate acetylcholinesterase can be detected histochemically. Tor 23 localizes to the nerve and is not clustered at the endplate. The utility of the antibody Tor 23 thus includes biochemical and histological analyses of the multiple forms of acetylcholinesterase.

    Notizen: X-ray spectra in the 5–15 A(ring) spectral region are presented for various elements with atomic numbers between 9 and 82. Plasma was produced by irradiating plane targets with 1-J, 800-ps frequency-doubled Nd:glass laser pulses at λ=527 nm. The characteristics of the spectra can be varied from pronounced K- and L-shell line emitters (F to As) to nearly continuous x radiators such as W or Au.

    Notizen: A frequency-doubled 2-GW Nd:glass laser with a small satellite pulse (1% of the main pulse) was used for investigations of the soft x-ray conversion efficiency in double-pulse irradiation of planar Cu targets. The separation of the two pulses was varied between ±1.3 ns, and the pulse duration between 45 and 800 ps. For the case of a prepulse, an enhancement of the soft x-ray emission by a factor of 2–3 was observed at pulse durations between 45 and 200 ps. A smaller increase was achieved for positive delays ("post-pulse''), and no improvement for 800-ps pulses.
