Notizen: This work reports on magnetic dichroism in photoemission from the Gd 4l(l=s,p,d,f ) core level of in-plane magnetized Gd films excited with linearly, circularly, and unpolarized light. Thin Gd films of about 100 ML thickness were evaporated onto a W(110) substrate at room temperature, and subsequently annealed to 700 K to form an ordered layer exhibiting a (0001) surface. The dichroism measurements were performed by physically rotating the sample azimuth so as to change the direction of the magnetization axis relative to the incident light. The magnetic dichroism asymmetries were obtained by calculating the normalized difference between spectra obtained with the two mutually orthogonal orientations of the magnetization. Strong asymmetries were observed, even if exciting the spectra by means of unpolarized light. The experimental results are compared to three-step photoemission cluster calculations based on a relativistic full potential algorithm respecting magnetic exchange. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The production of acoustic waves by the absorption of radiation, known as the photoacoustic effect, is described by two coupled differential equations for pressure and temperature. Here, solutions to the coupled equations are given for sinusoidal deposition of heat in space as is typically generated using two picosecond laser beams to form a transient grating. The solutions to the coupled equations, along with the equation of state of the fluid, gives the pressure, temperature, and density of the fluid following rapid deposition of heat. The time dependence of the grating diffraction efficiency is readily calculated from the modulation of the density and temperature. For small values of the viscosity and heat conduction parameters, closed form expressions for the state variables are given which describe thermal and acoustic modes of wave motion in the fluid. The method is applied for computation of the state variables using a frequency-dependent viscosity. Experiments with ethylene glycol are reported where the viscosity and sound speed are measured as functions of temperature.

Notizen: We have investigated the correlation between contact resistance, heat treatment, and micro structure in ohmic contacts on n-InP. The samples consisted of three different structures: 50 nm-Ni/200 nm-AuGe/n-InP, Au/100 nm-Pt/100 nm-Ti/50 nm-Ni/n-InP, and 200 nm-Au/100 nm-Pt/100 nm-Ti/50 nm-Ni/200 nm-AuGe/n-InP. After annealing the samples, depth profiles obtained by Auger electron spectroscopy and ion sputtering showed a tendency of the Ge to migrate from the Au–Ge alloy towards the Ni layer, as well as an accumulation of Ni at the semiconductor interface. A Ni–P phase is identified as being responsible for the ohmic character of the metal/InP interface. Specific contact resistivities were measured for the three different types of metallizations. We observed that the resistivity is sensitive to the annealing temperature and related to the amount of Ni at the metal/InP interface. The use of overlayers is suggested to avoid migration of the semiconductor components towards the contact surface. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Oil-in-water (o/w) emulsions for cosmetic use, such as lotions and creams, are complex multiple-phase systems, which may contain a number of interacting surfactants, fatty amphiphiles, polymers and other excipients. This study investigates the influence of two synthetic cationic polymers, Polyquaternium-7 and Polyquaternium-11, and the natural anionic polymer, gum of acacia, on the rheology and microstructure of creams prepared with a non-ionic mixed emulsifier (cetyl stearyl alcohol-12EO/cetyl alcohol) using rheology (continuous shear, and viscoelastic creep and oscillation), microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). A control cream containing no polymer was also investigated. The semisolid control cream was structured by a swollen lamellar gel network phase formed from the interaction of cetyl alcohol and the POE surfactant, in excess of that required to stabilize oil droplets, with continuous phase water. Endothermic transitions between 25 and 100 °C were identified as components of this phase. Incorporation of cationic polymer into the formulation caused significant loss of structure to produce a mobile semisolid containing larger oil droplets. The microscopical and thermal data implied that the cationic polymer caused the swollen lamellar gel network phase to transform into non-swollen crystals of cetyl alcohol. In contrast, incorporation of gum of acacia produced a thicker cream than the control, with smaller droplet sizes and little evidence of the gel network. Microscopical and thermal data implied that although there were also interactions between gum of acacia and both the surfactant and the swollen gel network phase, the semisolid properties were probably because of the ability of the gum of acacia to stabilize and thicken the emulsion in the absence of the swollen lamellar network.

Notizen: The effect of postdeposition annealing in vacuum and in dry O2 on the atomic transport and chemical stability of chemical vapor deposited ZrSixOy films on Si is investigated. Rutherford backscattering spectrometry, narrow nuclear resonance profiling, and low energy ion scattering spectroscopy were used to obtain depth distributions of Si, O, and Zr in the films. The chemical environment of these elements in near-surface and near-interface regions was identified by angle-resolved x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. It is shown that although the interface region is rather stable, the surface region presents an accumulation of Si after thermal annealing. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The stability of a ZrAlxOy film sputtered on Si upon thermal annealing in vacuum or in O2 was investigated. X-ray diffraction indicated that the as-deposited film was amorphous and remained so after annealing. Rutherford backscattering, narrow nuclear resonance profiling, and low-energy ion scattering provided the average composition of the film and the depth distributions of different elements. Chemical analysis of these elements was accessed by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Annealing in vacuum produced thickness inhomogeneities and/or transport of very small amounts of Si from the substrate into the overlying film, with formation of Si precipitates. Annealing in O2 led to oxygen exchange throughout the film, as well as Si transport in slightly higher amounts than in vacuum. Differently from the observed upon annealing in vacuum, Si was either incorporated into the Zr,Al–O framework or oxidized in SiO2. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Initial stages of oxidation of single-crystal, Si-faced silicon carbide were investigated using ion scattering and angle-resolved x-ray photoelectron spectroscopies. The very first oxidation products are shown to be silicon oxycarbides (SiCxOy), while, for longer oxidation times, a mixture of SiCxOy and SiO2 is formed in the near-surface region of the growing oxide film. The composition of the near-surface region of such thin films is very similar to that reported in previous investigations for the near-interface region when thicker oxides films are grown on SiC. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Aims : Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) is characterized by marked biological heterogeneity. The identification of reproducible parameters that can be combined with the International Prognostic Index (IPI) to better predict outcome could lead to the development of effective risk-adaptive strategies. Methods and results : Bcl-2 and CD10 expression was determined by immunohistochemistry. The impact of the positivity on survival was evaluated in combination with the IPI in 86 patients with a confirmed diagnosis of DLBCL. Patients were divided according to the IPI into low-risk (no to two factors) or high-risk (three to five factors) groups. Positivity rates were 25% for CD10 and 42% for Bcl-2. In a Cox analysis, the high-risk IPI group [hazard ratio (HR) 5.98, P 〈 0.0001) and Bcl-2 expression (HR 2.43, P = 0.02) were independent poor prognostic factors, and expression of CD10 (HR 0.41, P = 0.052) predicted a favourable outcome. Among patients in the low-risk IPI group, CD10 positivity was associated with an excellent 8-year overall survival (92% versus 45%, P = 0.06). In the high-risk IPI group, Bcl-2 positivity identified a subgroup with invariably fatal disease. Conclusions : The expression of CD10 in the low-risk IPI group, and the expression of Bcl-2 in the high-risk IPI group can identify two subgroups of patients who might benefit from new risk-adaptive treatment approaches.

Notizen: Background: Pentasa is a controlled-release tablet made from semipermeable microspheres and designed to continuously deliver therapeutic quantities of 5-ASA (5-aminosalicylic acid) throughout the gastrointestinal tract. Scintigraphic studies in healthy subjects have documented that 5-ASA release could occur in the small intestine. We tested here the disintegration of Pentasa in the digestive tract of nine patients with Crohn's disease of the small intestine. Materials: Each patient was given, after breakfast, a 250 mg tablet of Pentasa containing samarium-153 oxide. For 8 h the progression of the isotope in the gastrointestinal tract was followed using gamma camera scintigraphy. Plasma measurement of 5-ASA and acetylated 5-ASA was used to verify the liberation and absorption of 5-ASA. Results: The Pentasa tablet appeared completely dissolved in the stomach by 117 ± 18 min. Samarium oxide was first detected in the small intestine 60 ± 5 min after its ingestion; it reached the colon after 280 ± 13 min and it was completely absent from the small intestine at 360 ± 26 min. Plasma concentrations of 5-ASA started to rise after 67 ± 7 min and were maximal at 222±25 min. Conclusion: In patients with Crohn's disease of the small intestine, Pentasa microgranules start releasing 5-ASA in the proximal small intestine, acting locally to exert its beneficial effect.
