Notizen: Fe/Tb (1.2 nm) multilayer films with various Fe layer thicknesses were prepared by vapor deposition. Magnetic and microstructure of the films were characterized by various experimental methods. The results show that the films evolve from ferromagnetic to superparamagnetic, and Fe in the multilayers transforms from bcc crystalline to amorphous state. The transition of magnetic property and structure is found to be related to the rough interface associated with the amorphous phase formation in Fe/Tb interface. In the [Tb(1.2 nm)/Fe(0.5 nm)]30 multilayer, Fe layers are separated into discontinuous superparamagnetic clusters by three-dimensional Tb crystal aggregates, which are responsible for paramagnetic-like spins at the interface that strengthen the spin-dependent scattering. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Thin films of the high Tc superconducting Y-Ba-Cu metal oxide have been prepared for the first time by plasma-assisted organometallic chemical vapor deposition using β-diketonate chelates of Y, Ba, and Cu, Y(C11H19O2)3, Ba(C11H19O2)2, and Cu(C11H19O2)2 as starting materials, followed by post-annealing under a reduced pressure of oxygen stream. X-ray diffraction spectra indicate that the films deposited on the yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) substrate have a significant preferential orientation of the crystallite c axis being perpendicular to the substrate surface. Four-probe resistivity measurements reveal the temperature of the onset of superconductivity at 91.6 K and zero resistance by 78.5 K.

Notizen: An ultrafast quenched plastic scintillation detector was used to measure the fusion fuel ion temperature at low implosion (DT) neutron yield (5×108–3×109) in the initial experiment performed at the Shenguang II laser facility. The typical temperatures of exploding pusher targets for direct drive were around 4 keV and the uncertainties were ±15–23%. The detection efficiency of the detector to DT neutrons was calibrated at a K-400 accelerator. The time response function of the detection system was calibrated by implosion neutrons from a DT-filled capsule, which can be regarded as a δ function pulsed neutron source due to its much narrower pulse width than that of the measured neutron time-of-flight spectrum. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae has a finite life span that is defined by the number of times the cell divides. The patterns of expression of certain genes change in a specific manner during the life span, implying that at least some of the manifestations of the ageing process are subject to gene regulation. It has now been determined that the controlled expression of the RAS oncogene in yeast increases the longevity of this organism, indicating that, conversely, a defined alteration in the activity of a single gene can extend this organism's life span. The results suggest that there is a balance between life-span extension and growth arrest when RAS is expressed. Inasmuch as the homologues of RAS in yeast function to integrate cell metabolism with the cell cycle, these studies raise the possibility that this integrative function may also apply to the co-ordination of successive cell cycles during the life span.
