Notizen: We report the experimental results of the standing waves in GaAs coplanar waveguides at frequencies up to 20.10 GHz with different terminations (open, short, and 50 Ω) by a new electro-optic probing technique. The effective refractive indices from 4.11 to 20.10 GHz are presented and compared with theoretical values. Dispersion of coplanar waveguide in that frequency range is shown to be negligible.

Notizen: Room-temperature continuous-wave (cw) lasing operation with a threshold current (Ith) of 3 mA and a pulsed Ith as low as 1.5 mA were achieved in mushroom structure surface- emitting lasers utilizing a 300 A(ring) GaAs single quantum well as an active layer and an AlAs/Al0.1Ga0.9As multilayer as the top and the bottom distributed Bragg reflectors. A series resistance of 250 Ω was obtained on devices with an 8×8 μm2 active region using selective zinc diffusion. A differential quantum efficiency of 12%–20% and a maximum cw light output power exceeding 1 mW were achieved. The emission wavelength was 860 nm with a spectral linewidth of ∼0.5 A(ring).

Notizen: We report the results of investigations on the transient heating and series resistance of a vertical-microcavity surface-emitting (VMSE) laser with an air-bridge structure. Transient temperature broadening of the lasing spectrum and chirping of the current versus voltage characteristic are analyzed experimentally and theoretically. We believe that the experiments provide us valuable information on the severity of the heating problems in VMSE laser.

Notizen: Abstract: In the present study, neuronal and Schwann cell marker proteins were used to biochemically characterize the spatiotemporal progress of degeneration/regeneration in the silicone chamber model for nerve regeneration. Rat sciatic nerves were transected and the proximal and distal stumps were inserted into a bridging silicone chamber with a 10-mm interstump gap. Using dot immunobinding assays, S-100 protein and neuronal intermediate filament polypeptides were measured in different parts of the nerve 0–30 days after transaction. In the most proximal nerve segment, all the measured proteins were transiently increased. In the proximal and distal stumps adjacent to the transection, the studied proteins were decreased indicating degeneration of the nerve. Within the silicone chamber, the regenerating nerve expressed the Schwann cell S-100 protein already at 7 days, whereas the neurofilament polypeptides appeared later. These observations are corroborated by previous morphological studies. The biochemical method described provides a new and fast approach to the study of nerve regeneration.

Notizen: A recent proposal to assign or reassign absorptions in Fourier transform infrared spectra of the products of evaporating graphite trapped in argon matrices to linear C13 and cyclic C8 has been examined. An analysis of the experimental and theoretical data presented indicates that the claimed identification of linear C13 is unwarranted. Simulations of spectra based on density functional theory calculations and isotopic shift data indicate that an absorption at 1818.0 cm−1 belongs to a carbon chain, and do not support a revision of our earlier identification of the ν12(eu) fundamental of cyclic C8 at 1844.2 cm−1. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The cyclic C8 cluster was detected and identified for the first time in Fourier transform infrared spectra of the products from the laser evaporation of 13C/12C rods trapped in Ar at ∼10 K. Measurements on spectra produced using both 12C- and 13C-enriched rods combined with ab initio predictions have resulted in the assignment of the most intense infrared active mode, ν12(eu)=1844.2 cm−1 of the cyclic C8 isomer with C4h symmetry. A new isotopic perturbation model (IPM) in which normal mode information from ab initio calculations is combined with experimental vibrational frequencies was developed in order to investigate the isotopic vibrational spectrum that is complicated by the fact that the mode is doubly degenerate and mixes with two infrared inactive modes lying nearby. The assignment of ν12(eu) is based on excellent agreement of the frequency, 13C isotopic shifts, and relative intensities with the predictions of earlier density functional theory (DFT) calculations and perturbation treated DFT/B3LYP/cc-pVTZ calculations using the IPM model carried out in the present study. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Abstract: Postlesion plasticity of neuronal processes might contribute to secondary spontaneous seizures after kainic acid administration. In this study, neurofilament (NF) proteins were examined following intraperitoneal injection of kainic acid, and special reference was given to temporal changes in quantity and quality of the NF light (NF-L) and heavy (NF-H) subunits. A pronounced decrease in phosphorylation-related immunoreactivity of NF-H occurred as early as 1 day after the injection in the amygdala/pyriform cortex, hippocampus, striatum, and dorsal cerebral cortex. A shift of NF-H from the phosphorylated to nonphosphorylated form was evident in immunoblots, suggesting dephosphorylation contributed to the decrease. Decreases in NF-L and phosphorylated NF-H contents in the limbic structure at 3 days were correlated with the increasing kainic acid doses from 2.5 to 10 mg/kg. The degradation pattern in immunoblots with antibodies against NF-L indicated that the decrease in NF-L was probably due to calcium-activated proteolysis. NF-L and phosphorylated NF-H contents secondarily increased from 9 days onward, with ∼20% above the control level of phosphorylated NF-H immunoreactivity at 27 days in the amygdala/pyriform cortex and ventral hippocampus. Immunohistochemical examination of the hippocampus revealed that an increase of NF staining in the mossy fiber system may contribute to the NF recovery in this region. Furthermore, the temporal changes of NF-L and phosphorylated NF-H contents were positively correlated with those of the neuronal cell adhesion molecule, a neuritic growth cone marker, substantiating postlesion regenerative reactions of NF proteins. Functional consequences of the NF plasticity remain to be identified.

Notizen: Abstract: A quantitative dot immunobinding procedure was used to quantify glial [the S-100 protein and the glial fibrillary acidic (GFA) protein] and neuronal (the 68- and 200-kDa neurofilament polypeptides, neuron-specific enolase, and neuronal cell adhesion molecule) markers. A single intraperitoneal administration of 10 mg/kg of MK 801 blocked the increase of glial parameters and the decrease in content of neuronal marker proteins that occurred as the response to an N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) lesion in the rat hippocampus. The degradation products of GFA protein and the 68-kDa neurofilament polypeptide that were induced by the NMDA lesion did not appear after MK 801 treatment. This study shows that brain-specific proteins are a set of precise tools for the evaluation of neuroprotective effects of antagonists to excitatory amino acids.

Notizen: The ion beam-induced crystalline-to-amorphous transition has been investigated for crystalline phases in the Al2O3–SiO2 system: Al2O3, SiO2 (quartz), Al2SiO5 (kyanite, andalusite, sillimanite), and 3Al2O3⋅2SiO2 (mullite). Xe+ 1.5 MeV was used to irradiate samples at temperatures from 15 to 1023 K in situ in a transmission electron microscope to determine the critical amorphization doses. The susceptibility to amorphization is (highest to lowest): quartz, sillimanite, kyanite, andalusite, mullite, and alumina. These data are compared to viscosities and activation energies for viscous flow of melts in this system. The doses required for amorphization by ion irradiation are related to the viscosities of the melts. The activation energies for irradiation-enhanced annealing are qualitatively correlated with the activation energies of viscous flow. These results suggest a parallel between ion beam irradiation-induced amorphization and glass formation. Glass-forming "ability'' correlates with susceptibility to radiation-induced amorphization. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.
