Notizen: The pulsed neutron powder diffraction study of La1−xSrxMnO3 reveals that the local atomic structure is significantly different from the long range structure, and these differences are important in understanding their properties. Even though the crystal structure suggests that the Jahn–Teller (JT) distortion disappears quickly with Sr doping, the analysis by the pair distribution function technique indicates that locally JT distortions are always present. Doped charge carriers induce local anti-JT distortions and disrupt the long range JT distortion. In the paramagnetic phase, such anti-JT distortions are represented by Mn4+ ions, corresponding to small polarons. Below Tc charge carriers are delocalized, but still induce local lattice distortions, giving rise to an inhomogeneous metallic state. The effects of these local distortions are discussed. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Fe–Cr superlattices exhibit giant magnetoresistance effect which can be utilized in magnetic recording heads. There are many studies indicating the role of the interfacial structure on the magnetoresistance effect. To elucidate this point we have performed x-ray diffraction study of three [Fe(30 A(ring))/Cr(12 A(ring))]10 superlattices which had been sputtered in 4, 7, and 10 mTorr of Ar. We used position sensitive detector in horizontal setup to collect simultaneously specular scattering intensity (z component of the scattering vector Q perpendicular to the film) and off-specular intensity with y parallel to the plane of the sample. This technique allows to evaluate interfacial roughness at various length scales. Short range roughness may be due to interdiffusion, while some medium range roughness is also present, and could have effects on transport phenomena. In conventional low angle diffraction analysis these contributions are intermixed. From the Fourier transform of the scattered intensity distribution in Qx−Qy plane the interfacial height fluctuation function g(r)can be obtained (r is a lateral spacing). Figure 1 presents g(r) obtained for three samples of Fe–Cr. It is apparent that 4 mTorr sample is very different than 7 and 10 mTorr in terms of interfacial roughness. We will discuss in detail results of the diffraction studies together with the magnetization and magnetotransport data. ©1996 American Institute of Physics. [S0021-8979(96)61408-0]

Notizen: We examine the consequences for magnetism of icosahedral site symmetry and of long-range icosahedral ordering as found in quasicrystals. Enhanced magnetic moments and Curie temperatures can result from icosahedral site symmetry. Exceptionally low magnetic anisotropy, unusual domain walls, and extremely soft magnetic behavior are predicted for long-range icosahedrally ordered magnets. Preliminary magnetic data on rapidly solidified, metastable icosahedral magnetic phases based on Co-Er(-Si) and Co-Nb(-B) are reviewed and discussed in terms of their chemical short-range order.

Notizen: The discovery of an icosahedral phase in a rapidly quenched Al-Mn1 alloy has stimulated intensive research on the structure of these materials. We studied several single-phase icosahedral alloys to address a problem of isomorphous substitution and quasicrystallinity in these solids. The use of neutrons is attractive because the neutron scattering length of Mn is negative and this provides additional diffraction contrast. Since icosahedral solid lacks translational symmetry we used approach based on the pair distribution function (PDF) which gives an averaged distribution of interatomic distances. We observed significant differences in the diffraction pattern (DP) depending on kind of element that substituted Mn. For instance partial substitution by Cr resulted in strong (110000) peak while (100000) remained very weak. After total substitution DP was still different from the x-ray DP for Mn. For Ru the (100000) peak was the strongest whereas for Re (110000). Substitution of Al by 3% of Si caused an increase of (100000) and (110000). The peak positions in PDFs correspond well to distances calculated for the three-dimensional Penrose tiling, suggesting the presence of a quasicrystalline substructure. The observed changes in diffraction patterns and PDFs indicate nonrandom substitution in these alloys, for instance, Ru is found only on vertices. The vertex-vertex distances are predominantly observed in Al-Mn positional correlations. The effect of compositional order on local structure and magnetic properties will be discussed.

Notizen: Magnetic and compositional short-range correlations in amorphous (MnxNi1−x)75P16B6Al3 (x=0, 0.2, 0.3, and 0.4) were studied by neutron scattering. The spatial magnetic correlation in the alloy with x=0.4 was determined by spin polarized scattering, and it was shown that Mn spins are coupled either antiferromagnetically or ferromagnetically depending upon the separation. The composition dependence of the atomic pair distribution functions obtained by pulsed neutron scattering indicated that there is a strong compositional short-range ordering between Mn and Ni atoms, and that Mn atoms are separated from each other by more than a contact distance. We also present the first clear observation of the annealing effect on the compositional short-range order, in the alloy with x=0.4.

Notizen: Results of a synchrotron x-ray-scattering study on the structural anisotropy of sputter-deposited amorphous Tb26Fe62Co12 thin films are described, and the mechanisms which lead to the observed structural and magnetic anisotropies are discussed. The observed structural anisotropy is characteristic of bond-orientational anisotropy and is incompatible with the atomic pair-ordering model.

Notizen: Creep-induced magnetic anisotropy in metallic glass was investigated using a molecular-dynamics simulation. A model binary glass structure of 2048 particles interacting via Lennard–Jones potentials was creep deformed below its glass transition temperature. Creep deformation resulted in the bond-orientational anisotropy (BOA) within the first nearest-neighbor shell with a large sixth-order spherical harmonic component. The magnetic anisotropy estimated on the basis of the point-charge model shows that a small two-fold component of the BOA can induce a sizable magnetic anisotropy in amorphous rare-earth alloys.

Notizen: Domain reversal processes in Si3N4-overcoated TbFeCo 800-A(ring)-thick films have been investigated utilizing nanosecond laser irradiation and polarization microscopy. The sputter-deposited thin films are first magnetically saturated and then subjected to reversing fields of various magnitudes. The kinetics of the domain growth is measured in situ utilizing the polar Kerr effect and the nucleation is directly observed with the polarizing microscope. For low values of the reversing field, nucleation is observed to occur at defects in the thin film. In all cases studied so far, we have established that following the onset of nucleation, the reversal process occurs via domain growth. We have determined the temperature dependence of domain nucleation and wall velocity during laser annealing and the nanosecond results are discussed with reference to existing models for domain wall motion.

Notizen: The x-ray scattering intensity from sputter-deposited amorphous Tb24.3Fe75.7 films was measured using synchrotron radiation. The measurements show for the first time that the atomic structure in the film is anisotropic, and that the anisotropy is greatly reduced by annealing. The results can be explained in terms of elastic and anelastic stresses in the film, indicating that the growth-induced bond-orientational anisotropy is present in the film. It is suggested that the magnetic anisotropy due to such anelastic strain may be the origin of the observed magnetic anisotropy in the film.

Notizen: The kinetics of the Curie temperature relaxation phenomena of amorphous Fe32Ni36Cr14P12B6, including the effect of preannealing, are shown to be well explained in terms of the activation energy spectrum for anelasticity if we assume that an anelastic atomic rearrangement affects the local compositional short-range order of about 10 atoms. This result further supports the view that the kinetics of various reversible relaxation phenomena are determined by anelasticity.
