Notes: Natural killer (NK) cell aciiviiy in experimental murine amyloidosis was studied. In CBA/J mice, which show a high incidence of amyloidosis. NK activity was significantly decreased after 1 week of casein treatment. In C3H mice, which show a low incidence of amyloidosis, NK activity was not changed by casein treatment. Pretreatment with lipopolysaccharide in vivo enhanced the NK activities in CBA/J and C3H mice. These increases were not observed after casein treatment. The lowered NK activity of cells from CBA/J mice after casein treatment was restored to the normal range by indomethacine in vitro. Depletion of adherent cells from the spleen cells treated with casein had no effect on NK activity. Single-cell assay showed that casein treatment impaired the killing but not the binding of NK cells to target cells. After casein treatment, the splenic serum amyloid A (SAA) level gradually increased in CBA/J mice but remained low in C3H mice. NK activity was suppressed by the addition of serum obtained from CBA/J mice treated with casein but not by normal control serum. And partially purified AA protein obtained from the spleen of CBA/J mice treated with casein also suppressed NK activity in vitro.

Notes: A model system consisting of a uniformly distributed sample of ground pork in conjunction with a nitrite containing curing solution was utilized to evaluate the formation of N-nitrosamines. Utilizing this system a wide variety of compounds were discovered to dramatically reduce the level of N-nitrosopyrrolidine (NPyr) formed during frying. Carbohydrates including the reducing sugars dextrose, ribose, lactose, and maltose, as well as liquid smoke preparations, were found to reduce NPyr levels by as much as 60%. In addition, when low levels of combinations of inhibitors glucose, liquid smoke, and α-tocopherol were incorporated, reductions in nitrosamine levels as great as 80% were observed in model systems as well as in pilot plant manufactured bacon.

Notes: Solutes commonly employed in curing solutions were evaluated for their effect on nitrosamine formation utilizing a ground pork model system. Sodium erythorbate and sodium ascorbate were found to be equally effective in reducing nitrosopyrrolidine levels. The incorporation of sodium tripolyphosphate or sucrose had no detectable effect on nitrosamine formation. However, sodium chloride, the solute present at the highest concentration in bacon curing solutions, exhibited a concentration dependent inhibition of nitrosopyrrolidine formation. Nitrosopyrrolidine levels in samples containing no added sodium chloride were found to be 50% higher than samples processed with 1.5% added salt.

Notes: A model bacon system has been developed which enables a more reproducible determination of N-nitrosamines when compared to conventional methods of bacon production. Utilizing this system, the effect of slice thickness and frying time on nitrosopyrrolidine (NPyr) formation has been demonstrated. Short frying periods (3 min/side) result in higher NPyr levels for thinner sliced samples and longer frying periods (5 min/side) result in higher NPyr levels for thicker sliced samples. The level of N-nitrosamine formed is integrally related to slice thickness and frying time and may be explained when two factors are considered, the rate of N-nitrosamine formation and the rate of its volatilization.

Notes: Abstract The membrane potential response of proximal tubular cells to changing HCO 3 − concentrations was measured in micro-puncture experiments on rat kidney in vivo. No significant effect was noticed when luminal bicarbonate concentration was changed. Changing peritubular HCO 3 − by substitution with Cl− resulted in conspicuous membrane potential transients, which reached peak values after 100–200 ms and decayed towards near control with time constants of ∼2s. The polarity of the potential changes and the dependence of the initial potential deflections on the logarithm of HCO 3 − concentration suggest a high conductance of the peritubular cell membrane for HCO 3 − buffer, but not for Cl−, SO 4 2− , or isethionate. At constant pH $$t_{{\text{HCO}}_{\text{3}}^ - } $$ was estimated to amount to ∼0.68. At constant $$p_{{\text{CO}}_{\text{2}} } $$ , $$t_{{\text{HCO}}_{\text{3}}^ - } $$ was even greater because of an additional effect of OH− or respectively H+ gradients across the cell membrane. The secondary repolarization may be explained by passive net movements of K+ and HCO 3 − across the peritubular cell membrane, which result in a readjustment of intracellular HCO 3 − to the altered peritubular HCO 3 − concentration. Application of carbonic anhydrase inhibitors in the tubular lumen reduced the initial potential response by one half and doubled the repolarization time constant. The same effect occurred instantaneously when the inhibitor was applied—together with the HCO 3 − concentration step—in the peritubular perfusate. This observation demonstrates that membrane bound carbonic anhydrase is somehow involved in passive rheogenic bicarbonate transfer across the peritubular cell membrane, and suggests that HCO 3 − permeation might occur in form of CO2 and OH− (or H+ in opposite direction).

Notes: Abstract The occurrence of fluorite deposits in Japan is limited in the provinces characterized by tin and tungsten mineralization within Southwest Japan. The deposits were formed near acidic igneous rocks of Cretaceous to Tertiary age. The ores in limestone are generally associated with skarn and metallic ore minerals such as cassiterite, scheelite and chalcopyrite. Granitic rocks in the provinces are the ilmenite-series (Ishihara, 1977) having enhanced fluorine contents and high initial strontium ratios. A reducing condition of the ilmenite-series granitic magma may have been more favorable for the concentration of fluorine in the residual magma because of the crystallization of relatively Fe-rich mafic minerals. Presence of thick crust bearing carbonaceous matter at the site of magmatism could have involved in the enrichment of fluorine as well as the reducing condition.

Notes: Summary The Kakegawa strain of bovine coronavirus was easily propagated in suckling mice. Infected animals died with nervous symptoms, and serial passage was readily accomplished by intracerebral inoculation with brain emulsions. The 3rd passage viral material from infected mice evoked the same disease in suckling mice, rats and hamsters inoculated by the intracerebral or by the subcutaneous route. Viruses recovered from mice, rats and hamsters could be clearly differentiated from mouse hepatitis virus strain 2 by the neutralization test.

Notes: Summary Reflectance magnetocircular-dichroism spectra of a ferromagnetic semiconductor CdCr2Se4 were measured for temperatures between 4.2 K and 157 K. Off-diagonal elements of the dielectric tensor were calculated from the measured spectra. A number of fine structures was resolved, the energy position of which was plotted against temperature. It is found that there are two red-shifting structures: one at 1.1 eV (the well-known absorption edge) and the other at 1.9 eV. Other structures show slight blue-shift. These energy positions were compared with the band structure calculated by means of the self-consistentDV-Xα technique.
