    Notizen: Single crystals of the superconductor YBa2Cu3Oy have been grown from a mixture of solid phase YBa2Cu3Oy and liquid phase silver. Crystals with a thickness of up to 1 mm along the c axis can be obtained when the mixture is soaked at 1005 °C for more than 8 h. Silver melt enhances the peritectic partial melting of the YBa2Cu3Oy solid phase, and induces the solution and reprecipitation process during sintering at 1005 °C. Stacked plate-like YBa2Cu3Oy grains grow through a coalescence process. Crystals are heavily twinned after 20 h of O2 annealing at 500 °C. They exhibit a sharp superconducting transition with an onset temperature of 93 K in zero field.

    Notizen: The only II-VI/II-VI wide band-gap heterojunction to provide both good lattice match and p- and n-type dopability is CdSe/ZnTe. We have carried out numerical simulations of several light emitter designs incorporating CdSe, ZnTe, and Mg alloys. In the simulations, Poisson's equation is solved in conjunction with the hole and electron current and continuity equations. Radiative and nonradiative recombination in bulk material and at interfaces are included in the model. Simulation results show that an n-CdSe/p-ZnTe heterostructure is unfavorable for efficient wide band-gap light emission due to recombination in the CdSe and at the CdSe/ZnTe interface. An n-CdSe/MgxCd1−xSe/p-ZnTe heterostructure significantly reduces interfacial recombination and facilitates electron injection into the p-ZnTe layer. The addition of a MgyZn1−yTe electron confining layer further improves the efficiency of light emission. Finally, an n-CdSe/MgxCd1−xSe/MgyZn1−yTe/p-ZnTe design allows tunability of the wavelength of light emission from green into the blue wavelength regime.

    Notizen: TiNx films of various composition have been prepared by reactive-ion-beam sputtering at a deposition temperature of 50 °C. Young's modulus E and hardness H of these films were measured by a depth-sensing nanoindentation technique, whereas the shear modulus G was obtained by a measurement of the velocity of the acoustic surface wave by Brillouin light scattering. The study was extended over a wide range of stoichiometries, 0≤x≤0.8. A proportionality between E and H has been observed.

    Notizen: Phase formation in the interfacial reactions of ultrahigh vacuum deposited Ti thin films on (111)Si has been studied by in situ reflected high energy electron diffraction (RHEED) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). In situ RHEED and high resolution TEM data showed unambiguously that there is considerable intermixing of Ti and Si atoms during Ti deposition. Ti5Si3 was found to be the first nucleated phase followed by Ti5Si4 and TiSi. Ti5Si3, Ti5Si4, TiSi, and C49-TiSi2 along with a-interlayer were found to form in samples annealed at 475 °C for 30 and 60 min. Ti5Si4 was the first silicide phase to disappear followed by Ti5Si3 then TiSi. In samples annealed at 700 °C for 10 min, C54-TiSi2 started to appear. To understand the thermodynamic origin of the phase formation, metastable free energy diagrams at 450–600 °C have been constructed. Ti5Si3 and C49-TiSi2 were found to have the highest and lowest driving force, respectively. On the other hand, Ti5Si4 has the lowest interface energy. The sequence of formation and disappearance of silicide phases is discussed accordingly.

    Notizen: The Al composition of AlGaAs has been determined by four methods: high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), reflection high-energy electron diffraction (RHEED), photoluminescence (PL), and double-crystal x-ray diffraction (DCXRD). HRTEM is direct and the most accurate method because it does not involve any formula or extrapolation. Using the result obtained from HRTEM as a standard, we have calibrated the results from other methods. RHEED intensity oscillation is found to be accurate and reliable, if the growth conditions are correctly chosen. Comparing the PL results with those determined from HRTEM and RHEED, we suggest three formulas to determine the Al contents at different temperatures. We also proposed a polynomial to determine the Al concentration using the DCXRD measurement.

    Notizen: A magneto-optical head with circular polarized light incident on a Co/Pt superlattice medium is studied. Differential absorption due to magnetic-circular-dichroism (MCD) is used for erasable data detection. This MCD detection system utilizes an optical isolator to minimize the feedback to the laser. The tradeoff for its reduced complexity is the loss of the common mode noise reduction capability. A disk is tested dynamically with the MCD detection system. With a linear medium velocity of 7.56 m/s and a frequency of 5 MHz a carrier-to-noise ratio of 40 dB is demonstrated.

    Notizen: The first nucleated phase in ultrahigh vacuum deposited Ti thin films on silicon has been unambiguously identified utilizing high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HREM) in conjunction with optical diffractometry. Ti5Si3 was found to form first at the interface of the Ti overlayer and the amorphous interlayer. For plan-view specimens of the samples annealed at 450 °C for 30 min, 1 and 2 h, all 15 silicide diffraction rings corresponding to interplanar spacings longer than 0.098 nm could be attributed to Ti5Si3. Ti5Si3 was also the only silicide phase that could match the symmetry and lattice spacings of the HREM images. The observation is consistent with a kinetic model which predicts that the crystalline phase with composition and structure nearest to that of the amorphous interlayer will be first nucleated.

    Notizen: A UHV compatible compact double-crystal monochromator was designed and constructed for BEPC diffraction and the scattering beamline 4B9A. It is a compact device with a 325 ×250×250 mm3 vacuum chamber. A T-structure mechanism has been designed for allowing the monochromator to have a Bragg angle range from 5° to 70° and keep the exit beam position and direction fixed during wavelength tuning. The first crystal is cooled by a heat-pipe cooling system and a pair of PZT drivers provide a two-dimensional adjustment to optimize the alignment between two crystals. The design and operating principles are described in this paper.

    Notizen: The BEPC beamline 4B9B is intended for VUV-SX photoelectron spectroscopy and other soft x-ray applications. The beamline optical system consists of a focusing mirror system and a VUV-SX spherical grating monochromator with four gratings, which cover a large spectral range 10–1100 eV. Three laminar gratings (1100, 500, and 200 lines/mm) with a 57–m radius are used at a 174° including angle, and the other grating (600 lines/mm) with a 6-m radius is used at a 142° including angle to be suited for low-energy use. Scanning is achieved by the rotation of the grating, and a pair of stepping motor-driven slits follow the Rowland circle to improve the monochromator's performance. The optical design and ray tracing results about this monochromator are described
