    Notes: Background:  Prominent infiltration of eosinophils into the airway mucosa and release of inflammatory mediators upon their adhesion onto airway epithelial cells are the immunopathogical mechanisms of allergic asthma.Objective:  We investigated the effect of normal and paraformaldyhyde-fixed human eosinophils on BEAS-2B cells, a human bronchial epithelial cell line, for the release of inflammatory cytokine interleukin (IL)-6.Methods:  Interleukin-6 in cell culture supernatant, protein amount of p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK), and nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) activity in BEAS-2B cells were analyzed by Western blot and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). IL-6 gene expression was assessed by reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), and p38 MAPK activity and inhibitor (I)κB-α induction were evaluated by Western blot.Results:  Co-culture of BEAS-2B cells and eosinophils induced a significant elevation of IL-6 expression in BEAS-2B cells. Interaction of eosinophils and BEAS-2B cells led to a marked induction in phospho-p38 MAPK, phospho-IκB-α and activity of NF-κB in BEAS-2B cells. NF-κB inhibitor BAY 11-7082 and p38 MAPK inhibitor SB 203580 significantly decreased IL-6 release in a co-culture of BEAS-2B cells and eosinophils. Fixed human eosinophils were able to maintain their ability to induce IL-6 release in co-culture, activate p38 MAPK and NK-κB, and up-regulate IL-6 gene expression in BEAS-2B cells.Conclusions:  These data indicate that the interaction of eosinophils and bronchial epithelial cells plays an important role in airway inflammation, at least partly, via IL-6 induction.

    Notes: ‘Ketan Nangka’, the donor of the wide compatibility gene (WCG) showed typical hybrid sterility when crossed to a landrace, ‘Bai Mi Fen’, of Yunnan province in China. A genome-wide analysis was performed for a backcrossed population of ‘Ketan Nangka’/‘Bai Mi Fen’//‘Ketan Nangka’ using a total of 143 simple sequence repeat markers and an expressed sequence tagged marker to cover the entire rice linkage map. As a result, two independent loci were found to cause hybrid sterility via female gamete abortion. The locus on chromosome 4 may correspond to S9, but the other, on chromosome 2, was different from all the previously reported hybrid sterility loci and was designated as S29(t) following the hybrid sterility nomenclature. On the basis of allelic interaction which causes female gamete abortion, two alleles were found: S29kn(t) in ‘Ketan Nangka’ and S29bi(t) in ‘Bai Mi Fen’. In the heterozygote, S29kn(t)/S29bi(t), which was semi-sterile, female gametes carrying S29bi(t) were aborted. An Aus variety from the Indian subcontinent, ‘Dular’, was found to have a neutral allele, S29n(t). Two molecular markers, RM185 and RM425, linked to S9 and S29(t), respectively, will be useful for marker-aided transfer of WCGs in hybrid rice breeding.

    Notes: The brown planthopper (BPH) is one of the most destructive insect pests of rice. Resistant varieties have proved to be one of the most economic and effective measures for BPH management. In this study, an indica rice ‘DV85’ showed resistance to biotype 2 of BPH by bulked seedling test, and a recombinant inbred line (RIL) population derived from a cross between a susceptible rice ‘Kinmaze’ and ‘DV85’ was phenotyped to map genetic factors conferring BPH resistance in ‘DV85′. Composite interval mapping revealed that one quantitative trait locus (QTL) with a LOD score of 10.1 was detected between XNpb202 and C1172 on chromosome 11. This QTL was designated as Qbph11. Qbph11 explained 68.4% of the phenotypic variance of BPH resistance in this population. The allele from the resistant parent ‘DV85’ at Qbph11 reduced the damage caused by BPH feeding and would be very useful in breeding resistant rice varieties via marker-assisted selection.

    Notes: CD4+CD25+ T cells have been shown to play a regulatory or suppressive role in the immune response and are possibly relevant to the pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases. In the present study, we attempted to investigate the levels of CD4+CD25+ T cells in the peripheral blood (PB) and synovial fluid (SF) of patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and the effects of CD4+CD25+ T cells on the in vitro cytokine production by stimulated SF mononuclear cells (SFMC). The results showed that RA patients had similar frequencies of CD4+CD25+ T cells in PB, expressed as a percentages of the lymphocyte population, as did healthy subjects (mean ± SD: 10.52 ± 5.87% versus 11.11 ± 4.58%., respectively). But in contrast to PB, the SF of RA patients contained significantly higher levels of CD4+CD25+ T cells (17.77 ± 7.92% versus 10.52 ± 5.87%, respectively. P 〈 0.001). When cocultured in vitro with SFMC, CD4+CD25+ T cells purified from either PB or SF were found to exert a considerable suppressive effect on the production of cytokines including TNF-α, IFN-γ and interleukin-10 (IL-10). The percentages of inhibition of each cytokines ranged from 41.8 to 98.4% (mean, 80.0%) for TNF-α, 42.8 to 98.9% (mean, 83.2%) for IFN-γ and 59.3 to 96.6% (mean, 80.0%) for IL-10. Because both pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines were suppressed by CD4+CD25+ T cells, whether CD4+CD25+ T cells might play a beneficial role in the suppression of sustained inflammation in rheumatoid synovium remains to be elucidated.

    Notes: We quantified the effect of stand age and tree species composition on canopy transpiration (EC) by analysing transpiration per unit leaf area (EL) and canopy stomatal conductance (GS) for boreal trees comprising a five stand wildfire chronosequence. A total of 196 sap flux sensors were used on 90 trees consisting of Betula papyrifera Marsh (paper birch; present in the youngest stand), Populus tremuloides Michx (quaking aspen), Pinus banksiana Lamb. (jack pine), and Picea mariana (Mill.) (black spruce). While fine roots were positively correlated with stand EC; leaf area index, basal area, and sapwood area were not. Stands less than 70 years old were dominated by Populus tremuloides and Pinus banksiana and stands greater than 70 years old were composed almost entirely of Picea mariana. As Populus tremuloides and Pinus banksiana increased in size and age, they displayed an increasing sapwood to leaf area ratio (AS : AL), a constant minimum leaf water potential (ΨL), and a constant proportionality between GS at low vapour pressure deficit (Dj GSref) and the sensitivity of GS to D (–δ). In contrast, AS : AL, minimum ΨL, and the proportionally between –δ and GSref decreased with height and age in Picea mariana. A GS model that included the effects of D, AS : AL, tree height, and for Picea mariana an increasing soil to leaf water potential gradient with stand age, was able to capture the effects of contrasting hydraulic properties of Picea mariana, Populus tremuloides and Pinus banksiana during stand development after wildfire.

    Notes: The concept of paracolloid was raised by Dupre et al. in 1979 to describe a rare lesion, in which large amounts of homogeneous, pale pink, non-amyloid material in sun-exposed skin. The deposits consisted of haphazardly arranged microfilaments of 3–4 nm in diameter. Here we report another case. A 54-year-old white male presented with a 2 × 2 cm boggy, erythematous plaque involving the bridge and tip of the nose for two years. The lesion enlarged slowly and intermittently drained pinkish fluid. A shave biopsy revealed extensive homogeneous, pale pink material with fissure and clefts in the dermis. The deposits wrapped up hair follicles and sebaceous glands, and superficially mixed with scattered solar elastic fibers and globules. There were scattered fibroblasts, focal mild perivascular and perifollicular lymphocyte and plasma cells. Adjacent skin showed prominent solar elastosis. A thin grenz zone was present abutting an atrophic epidermis with actinic keratosis. The deposits showed faint Congo red stain with focal weak apple-green birefringence, faint PAS stain, and negative Verhoeff-van Gieson stain. Masson’s trichrome stain and immunohistochemical stain for collagen IV were negative.

    Notes: In recent years, much progress has been made in the rearing of fish larvae fed only artificial diets. A preliminary study was made in an attempt to evaluate the effects of live food and formulated diets on survival, growth and body protein content of first-feeding larvae of Plelteobagrus fulvidraco. Three test diets varying in protein level were formulated: Feed 1 containing 45% protein, Feed 2 with 50% protein and Feed 3 with 55% protein. Larvae fed live food (newly hatched Artemia, unenriched) were the control. The experiment started 3 days post-hatch and lasted for 23 days. At the end of the 23-day trial, survival was best in the control group (65.6%) whereby the final body weight and specific growth rate (SGR) were significantly lower than those in the test feed groups. At the same time, coefficients of variation for SGR and final body weight in the test groups were significantly higher than those in the control. Whole body protein content in all treatments showed a similar tendency during development: significantly higher 3 days post-hatch, then decreasing significantly, and then increasing unstatistically 10 days post-hatch. All results suggest that live food is still better for first-feeding larvae of P. fulvidraco, since live food leads to healthier larvae growth.

    Notes: Gold nanoclusters dispersed in single crystal TiO2, MgO, and SrTiO3 have been prepared by ion implantation at 300–975 K and subsequent annealing at 1275 K for 10 h. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy and high-angle annular dark field (HAADF) imaging in aberration corrected scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) have been used to characterize the microstructure of the gold nanoclusters dispersed materials. STEM-HAADF imaging with atomic resolution has directly revealed for all three materials that Au atoms partially occupy cation lattice positions. Cavities up to several tens of nanometers were observed in MgO and SrTiO3. The cavities and gold clusters are spatially associated in MgO and SrTiO3, indicating a strong interaction between the Au cluster and cavities. For MgO and SrTiO3, the faceting planes appear to be the same for both nanometer-sized cavity and the Au cluster, demonstrating that both the surface energy and the interfacial energy between Au cluster and the matrix are lowest on these planes.

    Notes: Polyaniline doped with camphorsulfonic acid (PANI.HCSA) nanofibers have beensuccessfully prepared using “nanofibers template” via electrospinning. The PVA nanofibers wereused as a template to get the PANI/PVA composite fibers. After removing the template by heattreatment, the PANI fibers were obtained. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) with the EnergyDispersive X-Ray Spectrometer software (EDX) and FT-IR spectra were used to characterize thecomposite fibers and the PANI.HCSA nanofibers.
