Notizen: Low-frequency turbulence has been studied in a plasma embedded in a pure toroidal magnetic field. A study of the variation of the spectral characteristics of the low-frequency turbulence with the variation in νin/Ωi has been carried out with two different sets of density and potential profiles. The spectral relation between density and potential fluctuations indicates that the Rayleigh–Taylor instability excites fluctuations in the long wavelength region, while the Rayleigh–Taylor driven drift instability is responsible for the short wavelength regime for νin/Ωi(very-much-less-than)1. Spectral characteristics observed in regions where density gradients are parallel to gravity are similar to the case where density gradients are antiparallel to the gravity and support the view that the fluctuations generated in the bad curvature region are transported to the good curvature region. The results are in agreement with theoretical predictions, numerical simulations, in situ measurements, and other laboratory experiments on drift and Rayleigh–Taylor instabilities. For νin/Ωi≥1, the spectral characteristics change and may correspond to the collisional gradient drift instability or the cross-field instability.

Notizen: A technique is suggested to separate the effect of conductive overburden from the recorded time-domain electromagnetic anomalies. Such a separation leads one to construct a relatively undistorted picture of the conductor underlying a conductive overburden. A parameter τ (with dimensions of time) is introduced to characterize various conductors. To illustrate the applicability of the technique, four ‘Input’ (Mark V) anomalies obtained over the Cuddapah District, A.P., India have been analyzed and different values of the time-parameter τ corresponding to the overburden and the mineralized zones are obtained.

Notizen: An interpretation scheme for horizontal-loop EM measurements is presented for a permeable sphere model. The induced multipole moments are found to contribute significantly even at very low frequencies for a permeable conductor. The anomaly profiles are computed considering multipole excitation (up to 20) to study the effect of depth of burial and permeability of conductor. The anomaly half-width along with the inphase and quadrature anomaly amplitudes allow direct interpretation of the parameters of the sphere. The above scheme is suitable for results of Dighem II (coplanar configuration), Slingram and Max Min II measurements.

Notizen: The response of a rectangular plate to the Crone PEM system has been investigated for different values of depth, dip and conductance parameters. The conductance aperture diagram is presented to estimate the conductance and depth to the top of a vertical sheet. Information regarding dip and depth may be obtained using the appropriate nomogram.

Notizen: A technique utilizing the convolution theorem is developed to obtain the time-domain electromagnetic response for a number of input pulses from the given step-function response. For illustration an idealized model of a homogeneously conducting non-permeable sphere placed in a uniform field is considered. The nature of the responses due to different types of pulses and their usefulness in estimating the constitution parameter of the sphere are discussed. To show the applicability of the suggested technique to generalized systems, calculations for a conducting permeable sphere are presented in the appendix.

Notizen: Velekin and Bulgakov (1967) in an interesting model experiment while studying the transient electromagnetic response of a conductive sphere placed below a thin conductive sheet found that at the earlier stages of the transience, the composite system response corresponded to the response due to the overlying sheet alone and at the later stages, it corresponded to that of the sphere alone. To examine whether such a separation of responses due to individual components can be analytically studied and applied to other source configurations, we have analyzed an idealized model consisting of two spherical shells. We find that in corroboration with the above results, the general nature of the curve consists of two humps representing the responses dominated by the outer shell and the inner shell respectively. In addition, however, we find that the two humps gradually disappear to yield a smooth decay curve for increasing values of the ratio σd1b/σ2d2a (where σ1, σ2 are the conductivities, d1, d2 are the thicknesses of the outer and inner shells respectively, and b and a are their respective distances from the centre) and the effect of inner shell on the composite system response is considerably reduced.
