Notizen: Erythrocyte 2,3-diphosphoglycerate (2,3-DPG) and associated haematological parameters were measured throughout the normal menstrual cycle, in each trimester of pregnancy and on the third day post partum. There was no significant change during the menstrual cycle but the 2,3-DPG concentration was increased early in pregnancy, and thereafter gradually decreased. Although other metabolic changes are likely to contribute to the increase in 2,3-DPG concentration, it is concluded that ‘functional anaemia’, secondary to increased oxygen demand, is a more important stimulus than the decrease in haemoglobin concentration. The implications of a decreased oxygen affinity of haemoglobin, secondary to the rise in 2,3-DPG concentration, are discussed in relation to anaemia and blood transfusion in pregnancy.

Notizen: The dynamics of the reactions of translationally energetic H atoms with BrCN, ClCN, and (CN)2 was studied by determining both the rotational state distribution and the translational energy disposition of the CN product ground vibrational level. The reaction was carried out using H atoms with a most probable translational energy of 92 kJ mol−1. The CN radical was monitored by time- and frequency-resolved absorption spectroscopy using the CN red system (A 2Π←X 2Σ) (2,0) band near 790 nm. Sub-Doppler resolution spectroscopy was used to determine the initial translational temperature of the CN(0,J) product. The fraction of the available reaction exothermicity that appeared as CN(0) rotational energy, fR, for H+XCN→HX+CN was 0.034±0.006, 0.061±0.02, and 0.13±0.007, for X=Br, Cl, and CN, respectively. Likewise, the fraction of the available reaction exothermicity that appeared as relative product translational energy, fT, was 0.52±0.25, 0.52±0.20, and 0.59±0.05, for X=Br, Cl, and CN, respectively. The absolute reaction cross sections for the H+XCN→HX+CN reactions were also measured to be 0.03, 0.02, and 0.3×10−16 cm2 for X=Br, Cl, and CN, respectively. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: [Auszug] Specific ion requirements define, to a great extent, the ecological niche of halophilic species, providing an advantage in general studies of phage ecology. The nature of halophilic genetic adaptation has a bearing on the suitability of seawater evaporates as sites for biogenesis and evolution. ...

Notizen: [Auszug] Pollutants are widely distributed by the atmosphere and the oceans. Contaminants can also be transported by salmon and amplified through the food chain. Here we show that groups of migrating sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) can act as bulk-transport vectors of persistent industrial ...

Notizen: Abstract The coupling between bound modes of a corrugated dielectric-slab waveguide and modes of the radiation continuum is analysed by a perturbation method. Loss coefficients that account for the power coupled into radiation modes by any Bragg order of corrugations with an arbitrary profile are determined for the bound modes. Agreement is found with published results for sinusoidal profiles. The proportion of power coupled out through each dielectric interface of the slab waveguide is also determined. When the corrugation has an asymmetric (blazed) profile and coupling to radiation modes is by the first Bragg order, more power can be coupled out through one interface than the other, even if the refractive indices of the cladding regions are equal. If the coupling is by a higher Bragg order, then the division of power can be considerably more unequal than for first-order coupling, with the greater proportion leaving the side of the waveguide opposite to that for first-order coupling. The ratio of the power coupled out the two sides varies cyclically with radiation wavelength.

Schlagwort(e): Arctic Amerasian shelf Sediment carbon and nitrogen isotopes

    Thema: Geologie und Paläontologie
Notizen: Abstract. Organic matter origins are inferred from carbon isotope ratios (δ13C) in recent continental shelf sediments and major rivers from 465 locations from the north Bering-Chukchi-East Siberian-Beaufort Sea, Arctic Amerasia. Generally, there is a cross-shelf increase in δ13C, which is due to progressive increased contribution seaward of marine-derived organic carbon to surface sediments. This conclusion is supported by the correlations between sediment δ13C, OC/N, and δ15N. The sources of total organic carbon (TOC) to the Amerasian margin sediments are primarily from marine water-column phytoplankton and terrigenous C3 plants constituted of tundra taiga and angiosperms. In contrast to more temperate regions, the source of TOC from terrigenous C4 and CAM plants to the study area is probably insignificant because these plants do not exist in the northern high latitudes. The input of carbon to the northern Alaskan shelf sediments from nearshore kelp community (Laminaria solidungula) is generally insignificant as indicated by the absence of high sediment δ13C values (–16.5 to –13.6‰) which are typical of the macrophytes. Our study suggests that the isotopic composition of sediment TOC has potential application in reconstructing temporal changes in delivery and accumulation of organic matter resulting from glacial–interglacial changes in sea level and environments. Furthermore, recycling and advection of the extensive deposits of terrestrially derived organic matter from land, or the wide Amerasian margin, could be a mechanism for elevating total CO2 and pCO2 in the Arctic Basin halocline.
