    Notizen: We report the case of a 5-year-old child who from birth had five erythemato-desquamative papulous lesions with a verrucose surface and linear distribution in the proximal region of the lower left leg not following the lines of Blashko. The morphological aspect and the evolution of the lesions, data from physical exploration of the skin and adnexa, the characteristics of the histopathology and its association with HLA Cw6 led us to diagnose congenital linear psoriasis. Differential diagnosis was established basically with ILVEN since distinction between the two entities is now traditional. We took into consideration the fact that linear psoriasis is a particular entity and can occur congenially, as in the case reported; although this is an exceptional occurrence.

    Notizen: Thin silicon carbide films have been deposited by chemical vapor deposition on p-type (100) silicon substrates. The composition and bonds formed in these films have been analyzed by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and infrared spectroscopy. The native surface oxide on the silicon carbide surface induced by air exposure has also been studied. Several phases are detected in the near-surface region: elemental Si, Si oxides (mainly SiO2), Si carbide (SiC) and Si oxicarbides (SiOxCy). Quantitative XPS analysis results indicate that, for atomic oxygen fractions 〈0.15, the Si–C phases are dominant in the films. Above this value no silicon oxicarbide is observed, but a multiphase material formed by elemental Si, Si oxides and Si carbides is observed. In spite of the film being a complex phase mixture, a simple relationship is found between the overall carbon and oxygen compositions. The carbon atomic fraction in the film decreases quasilinearly as the oxygen content increases, with a slope of about −1. An overall composition of SiOxC3−x in the 0.5〈x〈2 range is found for the phase mixture. A comparison with silicon carbide obtained by CHn+ ion implantation into monocrystalline silicon is made. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: A laboratory x-ray spectrometer designed for routine analysis in the 15–60-keV spectral range is described. It consists of a 40-cm bent-crystal transmission spectrometer in the Cauchois geometry, controlled by a microcomputer. The choice of the crystal analyzer and of the detection system is discussed. The instrument is well suited for large spectral range x-ray absorption and emission spectroscopy (XAS, XES) and x-ray source diagnostics.

    Notizen: Patients and Methods This parallel-group, double-blind trial compared the efficacy and tolerability of topical prednicarbate, 0.25% ointment, with that of fluocortin butyl ester, 0.75% ointment.The trial included 79 outpatients at three participating centers. All patients had a diagnosis of atopic dermatitis on the basis of Hanifin and Rajka's criteria.1 Other inclusion criteria were: age ≥ 18 years and stability or worsening of the condition for at least 1 week in the current episode. Patients were required to have been treatment-free for minimum periods of: 7 days if previously treated with other topical corticosteroids; 1 month if previously treated with systemic corticosteroids; 3 days if previously treated with shortacting antihistamines; 2 months if previously treated with astemizole.Exclusion criteria were: severe incapacitating dermatitis; infectious processes or association with other skin changes; need for the concomitant administration of antihistamines or antimicrobials; serious concurrent illness. Women not using adequate contraception were also excluded.A thin layer of topical prednicarbate (N = 42) or fluocortin butyl ester (N = 37) was applied to the affected area of skin twice daily, without occlusion. The duration of treatment was set at 21 days, but it could be interrupted earlier, at the discretion of the investigator, on the grounds of total disappearance of the condition, inefficacy, or the appearance of any adverse reaction. A daily application of an emollient oil and/or a cleaning or emollient aqueous cream could be used at the investigator's discretion.At the start of treatment and at 4, 7, 14, and 21 days, each of the following features was rated on a scale of 0 to 3 (0; absent, 1: mild, 2: moderate, 3: severe): pruritus; excoriations; erythema; scaling; lichenification; vesiculation; hyper-keratosis. On the basis of these scores, the overall efficacy of treatment was rated as: improvement 〉 improvement of 〉 50 to 75%; improvement of 〉 25 to 50%; improvement 〈 25%; no improvement; worsening.If the treatment ended before 21 days, owing to either cure or inefficacy, the score for the last evaluation was used for all subsequent followup points. At the end of treatment the investigator and the patient rated treatment as excellent, good, fair, or poor. Cosmetic acceptance by the patient was evaluated in the same terms.

    Notizen: A viroid was detected in Chrysanthemum plants showing symptotns of stunting in a commercial field in Brazil. Analysis by return polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (R-PAGE) of the nucleic acid preparations of leaves and flowers revealed the presence of a nucleic acid of low molecular weight with mobility within the range of viroids. The viroid-like band was completely eliminated by ribonuclease treatment or alkaline hydrolysis. The Chrysanthemum viroid was readily transmissible to Chrysathemum, tomnato and Gynura, which suggests that it may be an isolate of chrysanthemum stunt viroid.

    Notizen: Abstract The neuroradiological features of six intracranial and one intraorbital haemangiopericytomas (HP) are reviewed. CT was performed before and after IV contrast medium in 5 patients. In 2 patients MRI was performed before and after contrast medium; in another, only unenhanced images were obtained. Five patients were studied by selective external and internal carotid artery angiography. Women constituted 5 of the 7 patients, and the mean age was 50.5 years, thus the sex and age distribution did not differ from that of typical meningiomas. Contrary to previous reports, calcification was present in two of the intracranial HP, and bone erosion was clearly seen in one intracranial HP and the orbital lesion. On MRI the tumours showed no differences from angioblastic meningiomas. All 6 intracranial HP were aggressive; all recurred following treatment and extracerebral metastasis occurred in one case.
