    Notes: The flowfields created by transverse injection of sonic gaseous jets through a circular nozzle into a supersonic crossflow have been experimentally investigated using planar Rayleigh/Mie scattering from silicon dioxide particles seeded into the crossflow stream. Helium and air were used as injectant gases allowing an examination of the effects of compressibility on the large-scale structural development and near-field mixing characteristics present within the flowfield. Instantaneous images from end and side view image planes show a highly three-dimensional interaction dominated by both large- and small-scale vortices. Analyses of these image ensembles provide jet spreading and penetration characteristics, standard deviation statistics, large-scale mixing information, and two-dimensional spatial correlation fields. Results indicate that injectant molecular weight variations do not strongly affect the jet's transverse penetration into the crossflow, although they lead to substantially different compressibility levels that dramatically influence the characteristics of the large-scale structures formed in the shear layer and the entrainment and mixing occurring between the injectant and crossflow fluids. The large-scale eddies tend to rapidly break-up in the low compressibility injection case while those in the high compressibility case remain coherent over a longer spatial range. Mixing layer fluctuations present in the low compressibility case intrude deeply into the jet fluid as compared to the high compressibility case, where these fluctuations are confined near the jet edge. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Human peripheral blood monocyte subsets with and without Fc receptor for human IgG are known to suppress (FcR+) and enhance (FcR−) pokeweed mitogen-induccd polyclonal immunoglobulin synthesis in vitro. The ability of these subsets to modulate immunoglobulin production in the presence or absence OKT8− T cells and under conditions where suppressor T-cells activation was blocked by irradiation or mitomycin C was studied. It was shown that, regardless of the presence or absence of suppressor T cells, FcR− monocytes can suppress immunoglobulin production if their number in culture exceeds 20%. However, at lower numbers this monocyte sunset was suppressive only when suppressor T cells were activated. The suppressor T-cell activation was shown to be independent of the predominant presence of the FcR+ or FcR monocyte subset. Moreover, the enhancing effect of FcR−monocytes was not caused by their interference with suppressor T-cell activation.

    Notes: Summary We studied the intubating conditions, haemodynamic and endocrine changes following tracheal intubation during sevoflurane anaesthesia guided by Bispectral Index (BIS) monitoring in 40 children who received either remifentanil 1 µg.kg−1 (group R) or saline 1 ml.kg−1 (group S). Acceptable intubating conditions were found in all patients in group R (n = 20), compared to only 12 patients in group S (p = 0.002). There were no intergroup differences in heart rate, systolic blood pressure and plasma concentrations of epinephrine and norepinephrine at any time point and changes in haemodynamic variables throughout the study period were moderate. Titration of sevoflurane delivery to a target BIS of 35 ± 5 led to almost equal end-tidal sevoflurane concentrations in either group and remifentanil did not affect the BIS. There were no side-effects in either group that required intervention. Intubating conditions during sevoflurane anaesthesia in children were found to be improved by a single bolus dose of remifentanil 1 µg.kg−1.
