Notizen: Abstract Suspensions of ceramic particles in low or high molecular weight polymers are shaped into various three-dimensional parts using various moulding and extrusion technologies. Such bodies are subsequently fired-up and sintered to remove the binder. The utilities of such three-dimensional ceramic bodies depend on the restrictions related to the shapeability of the ceramic suspension, hence to the flow and deformation behaviour of the suspension. In this study, factors affecting the flow and deformation behaviour of a 50% by volume of silicon carbide in a wax binder was investigated. Consistent with the previously observed behaviour of other highly filled materials, the ceramic suspension exhibited viscoplasticity, plug flow and wall slip. Furthermore, flow instabilities associated with the axial migration of the low viscosity binder under the imposed pressure gradient were observed. These results pinpoint to the various difficulties associated with the collection of rheological data and emphasize the relevance of various flow mechanisms, including wall slip and mat formation and filtration based flow instabilities, which would also occur in processing/shaping flows of such ceramic suspensions including extrusion and moulding.

Notizen: Abstract D.c. electrical properties of low-density polyethylene filled with stainless steel fibres have been studied at various concentrations above the percolation threshold. The volume fractions used were 2, 5 and 10% of stainless steel fibre. The volume resistivity of polyethylene varied between 6.15×107 Ω cm at 2% loading level and 3.71×105 Ωcm at 10%. Corresponding values for surface resistivity varied between 2.77×107 Ω at 2% and 3.94×104 Ω at 10%. The value of the critical exponent for percolation was estimated to be around 2.4 for volume resistivity and 3 for surface resistivity.

Notizen: Abstract The development of flow instabilities during the capillary flow of two concentrated suspensions filled with 76.5 and 65.6% by volume solids was investigated. The flow instabilities manifested themselves by the development of concentration gradients as a result of the filtering of the binder, superimposed on the bulk motion of the suspension. The effects of apparent shear rate, capillary diameter and the surface roughness of the particles were investigated. The use of the comparison of the filtration rate with the bulk velocity of the suspension during flow is shown to be promising for the prediction of the apparent shear rate at which filtration-based flow instabilities occur.

Notizen: Abstract Electric and magnetic properties of composite materials consisting of low density polyethylene filled with powdered ferromagnetic materials were investigated. The volume fractions of the fillers were varied from 10% up to the theoretical maximum packing fractions, i.e. between 0.70 and 0.77, so that the percolation phenomenon could be investigated. The ferromagnetic fillers used were HyMu 800 (a nickel–iron–molybdenum alloy), MnZn ferrite and NiZn ferrite. The particle sizes and size distributions of the fillers were well characterized by image analysis techniques. Based on the particle size distribution the maximum loading levels of fillers as permitted by geometric considerations were calculated. The properties of the composites characterized included: volume and surface resistivities, dielectric constants, electrical loss factors and magnetic permeabilities.

Notizen: The present study reports on the results of an integrated experimental program to determine some of the important interactions between resin properties, moldability, and the microstructure and ultimate properties of molded articles. As part of the program, resins are characterized as to their rheological, thermal, and crystallization behavior. Then, the resins are injection molded in a laboratory machine employing simple, but highly instrumented molds in order to evaluate moldability and to produce moldings for testing and analysis. Microstructural analysis to determine morphology and orientation of the moldings is carried out utilizing polarized light microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. Finally, shrinkage and tensile properties of the moldings are determined experimentally. To illustrate the utility of the proposed techniques, results are reported for two polyethylene resins' that exhibit superficially similar properties but, according to tests, show significant differences in moldability and product properties.
