Notizen: During the last 10 years, there has been a vast increase in day-case surgery under general anaesthesia, but this has not been accompanied by research into the residual cognitive and motor effects during recovery from anaesthesia. Part of the explanation for this phenomenon is the lack of a suitable biophysical monitor of anaesthetic sedation. This review discusses one of the most commonly used of these biophysical monitors – namely saccadic eye movements. In particular, the efficacy of peak saccadic velocity as a monitor of sedation will be evaluated. In addition, the physiology and pharmacology of saccadic eye movements will be discussed within the context of developing other parameters of saccadic eye movements as novel biophysical monitors of anaesthetic sedation.

Notizen: In situ estimates of advective and dispersive properties of ground-water flow systems are essential for the adequate prediction of solute flow. Field tracer tests provide the best estimates of these properties; however, this approach is often precluded by the expense and time involved. Various laboratory techniques have been developed to circumvent these problems and provide convenient estimates of hydraulic conductivity and dispersivity. Although these techniques are used extensively in hydrogeological investigations, very few attempts have been made to compare their estimates with field values.A detailed investigation was performed on an unconfined sand aquifer using a combination of routine laboratory techniques and an innovative field tracer test. The extensive data set provided a unique opportunity to compare field results with those obtained by a variety of laboratory techniques. The hydraulic conductivity results from two different methods of grain-size analysis (Hazen, 1893; and Masch and Denny, 1966) were observed to be quite well correlated, although their absolute values did not correspond with the hydraulic conductivities determined from the tracer test. However, contrary to previous studies, the results from grain-size analysis were the same order of magnitude as the in situ values. In addition, the two grain-size methods appear to provide upper and lower boundaries within which lie the hydraulic conductivity estimates determined from the tracer test. Thus, grain-size analysis of moderately to well sorted sands may provide reasonable and convenient approximations of hydraulic conductivities of the aquifer. No correlation was observed between field tracer test longitudinal dispersivity values and those determined from laboratory column tracer tests. The latter, however, differed by only an order of magnitude from the in situ point measurements, a difference which is considerably smaller than has been previously reported. This is largely attributed to the accuracy of the sampling methods used in the tracer tests.

Notizen: Widespread evaporitic sulphate horizons occur in the frequently dolomitic Mercia Mudstones (Upper Triassic) of the English Midlands. The mudstones were deposited on an extensive peneplain which had areas of upstanding minor relief (Charnwood Massif, Derbyshire—Pennines, London Platform). Horst and graben structures formed during the early and middle Triassic, controlled late Triassic sedimentation rates and peneplain slope directions. A stable isotope study (S,C,O) of the sulphates and dolomites of the Trent Formation indicates that during the deposition of the lower Fauld Member grabens such as the Need wood Basin in Staffordshire and areas marginal to a graben such as Newark in Nottinghamshire had a marine brine regime with minor continental input. Using constraints applied by sulphate concentrations of modern waters in arid environments, the ratio of volume of marine input to volume of continental input lay between 3:1 and 4:1. The horst area (East Leake, Nottinghamshire) was strongly influenced by continental brines which derived sulphate from the exposed Carboniferous Hathern Anhydrite Series. A predominantly continental brine regime existed across the whole area during deposition of the overlying Hawton Member. Periodic marine influxes gave rise to thin sulphate horizons whilst continental run-off was occasionally sufficient to form temporary lakes. The Blue Anchor Formation (Rhaetian) was deposited in a lacustrine environment with waters of mixed marine and continental origin. Salinities were lower than those of the preceding Trent Formation brines.

Notizen: [Auszug] From inspection of the potassium and rubidium lines, the K/Rb ratio is not significantly different in the trilobites and enclosing sediments and is about the same as in sediments and igneous rocks. The Rb/Cs ratio was estimated with fair accuracy. This ratio gives a clearer indication of relative C ...

Notizen: [Auszug] It has been demonstrated that the isotopic record is consistent with no-growth crustal recycling models14-16. Early modelling14 indicated that at present, 5 km3yr-1 of crust would have to be recycled through the mantle and that this rate would have to increase exponentially with geological age to ...

Notizen: [Auszug] Anorthosites may be classified broadly into two types: Archaean and massif. The Archaean anorthosites typically occur as components of layered igneous intrusions1 of moderate size and are clearly of mantle origin. Plagioclase compositions lie in the range An80_95. In contrast, the massif-type ...

Notizen: [Auszug] THE flanged australites (Figs. 1 and 2) are the J[ most distinctive members of this well-preserved group of tektites. The common australite forms are distinguished by Fenner1 as round (buttons and lenses), oval (ovals, boats and canoes), dumbbells and teardrops. 'Cores' may be round, oval or ...
