Notes: Optical properties of ordered Ga0.5In0.5P epitaxial layers grown by metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy are investigated by photoluminescence (PL) in a temperature range of 10–200 K using excitation power densities between 0.35 W/cm2 and 20 W/cm2. It is found that the intensity of the highest-energy PL peak of the ordered Ga0.5In0.5P epilayer decreases first, then increases and finally goes down again with increasing temperature. A model of ordered Ga0.5In0.5P epitaxial layers is proposed, in which the ordered Ga0.5In0.5P epilayer is regarded as a type-II quantum well structure with band-tail states, and the dependence of PL spectra on the temperature and excitation intensity is reasonably explained. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract: We investigated the effect of chronically blocking NMDA receptor stimulation to examine changes in GABAA receptor expression and pharmacology in cerebellar granule cells at different stages of maturation. We have previously shown that NMDA-selective glutamate receptor stimulation alters GABAA receptor pharmacology in cerebellar granule neurons in vitro by altering the levels of selective subunits. When NMDA receptor stimulation is blocked with MK-801 during the first week in vitro, a decrease in the α1, γ2S, and γ2L receptor subunit mRNAs occurred. When present only during the second week, changes were limited to the α1 and γ2L mRNAs. Finally, if MK-801 was present during the first week and removed during the second week, these changes reversed. Whole-cell voltage-clamp recordings showed that treatment with MK-801 during either the first or second week increased the EC50 of the receptors for GABA and attenuated the potentiation mediated by flunitrazepam. Last, these properties were reversed if MK-801 was removed after the first week in vitro. Our results suggest that MK-801 reversibly inhibits GABAA receptor maturation by modulating receptor subunit expression and that the altered pharmacological responses appear to be dominated by changes in the levels of allosteric modulation mediated by the γ2 receptor subunit.

Notes: The effect of silver doping on the DC-voltage resistance failure of lead-based relaxor ferroelectrics was investigated via temperature-humidity-bias (THB) testing, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction spectroscopy, and electrical measurements. The failure rate of silver-doped specimens was found to increase significantly with the doping level during the THB test. However, some degraded specimens can partially recover their electrical properties after a few days of storing in natural conditions. X-ray diffraction analysis showed that silver could be incorporated into the perovskite lattice in the range of silver contents studied. The presence of an inner-bias field in the degraded ceramics was first demonstrated through hysteresis property measurement. Based on these results, it was inferred that the accumulation of oxygen vacancies under DC-voltage should be responsible for the inner-bias field, which consequently resulted in the increase of electronic defects in the ceramics.

Notes: Summary We have produced a large number of plants regenerated from protoplasts originally isolated from embryo-derived cell suspensions of wild barley, Hordeum murinum L.. Suspensions initially allowed protoplast isolation and culture 5.5 to 9 months from the date of callus initiation. Colony formation efficiencies ranged from 1.5 to 3.0 % and from 0.1 to 1.4 % for protoplast cultures with and without nurse cells, respectively. Both nurse and non-nurse techniques allowed efficient embryogenesis and plant regeneration. More than 400 shoots/plantlets have been obtained from 6 independent experiments. Over 150 plants have been transferred to the greenhouse. Protoplasts isolated from the youngest suspensions (5.5 months old) gave rise to the largest number of plants. Protoplasts isolated from suspensions as old as 15 months were also regenerable.

Notes: Summary Primary callus of barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) derived from scutella (cv. ‘Dissa’) and anthers (cv. ‘Igri’) was used for protoplast isolation and plant regeneration. The protoplasts were embedded in agarose and cultured with nurse cells. The plating efficiency varied from 0.1% to 0.7%. Shoots regenerated from the developing callus. Plantlets were transferred to soil and cultivated in the greenhouse three to five months after protoplast isolation. All plants were normal in morphology, and most of them flowered and set seeds.

Notes: The effect of rare earth oxides (Y2O3 and Dy2O3) on the microstructure and electrical properties of the X7R-type ceramics for base metal internal electrode multilayer ceramic capacitor (BME-MLCC) was investigated. As the amount of Y increased, the dielectric constants and the dielectric losses increased, while the temperature coefficient of capacitors (TCC) curve rotated in counterclockwise direction. On the contrary, the dielectric constants decreased with Dy, and the TCCcurve remained the same. The grain growth can be inhibited by the Dy2O3, concluded from XRD analysis. The different influences on dielectric properties between Y2O3 and Dy2O3 were discussed by defect chemistry. Y3+ acted as acceptor, performing B-site substitution, while Dy3+ showed the amphoteric behavior. By optimizing appropriate qualities of Y2O3 and Dy2O3, the most-compatible composition for BME X7R ceramics can be obtained

Notes: High-performance fine-grain (1-x)BiScO3-xPbTiO3 ceramics were prepared by two-stepsintering method. Influences of sintering temperature, holding time, and composition on themicrostructure and properties were discussed. The BSPT ceramics obtained via two-step sinteringreaches density higher than 95% at a low temperature of 800°C without any sintering aid, and the grainsize of the ceramics is also effectively controlled. Excellent piezoelectric properties between thecomposition of x=0.63 and x=0.64 reveals a probable MPB in this range, suggesting a potential approachto pursue high performance BSPT ceramics

Notes: Ultrafine-grained ceramics based on nano-scale barium titanate for BME-MLCC applicationshave been prepared. Relationships of milling time, microstructures and dielectric properties have beeninvestigated. With processing selected carefully, the present ceramics show ultrafine grain size (180nm)and homogeneous microstructures, well with high dielectric constant (ε25=2550), low dielectric loss(〈0.02), high resistivity, high breakdown field and X7R temperature specifications, which would bepromising materials for the next generation BME-MLCC applications

Notes: The wear properties of ADZ (alumina dispersed in Y-TZP) and MDZ (mullite dispersed inY-TZP) were investigated by using a ring-on-block tribometer. The results showed that for Y-TZPceramic, the addition of alumina phase (with 10-20% in mass fraction) leads to an improved wearresistance. With the increase of the normal load, the wear rates of ADZ ceramics increase. Under low andmedium normal load (100N and 300N), the wear resistance is controlled by the hardness of ceramics, andunder high normal load (500N) the fracture toughness is obviously contributed to the wear resistance ofthe ceramics. For MDZ ceramic, the wear resistance of 15MDZ (15wt% mullite dispersed in Y-TZP) isbetter than that of 20 MDZ (20wt% mullite) under the normal load from 100 N to 500 N. The mechanicalproperties of 15MDZ are worse than that of Y-TZP ceramic, but the wear resistance is enhanced due tothe action of “needle roller bearing” of the fractured rod-like mullite particles
