Notes: Stability of the electro-optic coefficient of a poled and cross-linked nonlinear optical polymer is reported at 85, 100, and 110 °C. The observed decay, which is due to orientational relaxation of the nonlinear optical dyes in the films, is discussed in terms of several proposed models. The introduction of a continuously varying relaxation time, which occurs when considering physical aging during the stability tests, is observed to account for orientational relaxation over a long time period. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A detailed study of the fundamental internal modes of the 1,2,4,5-tetrabromobenzene crystal has provided assignments of Raman-active modes consistent with polarized single-crystal measurements. A normal-mode calculation based on a valence force field derived from brominated and chlorinated benzenes is found to be in excellent agreement with the assignments. Additional bands arising from anharmonic interactions of the fundamentals are also assigned. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Strain-induced coupling constants for the anharmonicity of Raman-active lattice and certain molecular modes of vibration in 1,2,4,5-tetrabromobenzene (TBB) crystals have been determined using piezomodulated Raman spectroscopy. These constants, which are directly related to the first anharmonic term in the potential energy expansion for lattice dynamical calculations, are a quantitative measurement of the modal anharmonicities in the TBB molecular crystal. Application of uniaxial stress in the experiments permits the anisotropy of the anharmonicity to be determined as well as its magnitude. The TBB lattice modes are significantly coupled by the induced strains and the effects of coupling were observed to be dependent on the direction and symmetry of the strains. The molecular modes investigated were, by comparison, less coupled by the acoustic phonons and generally exhibited less anharmonic response with increasing frequency. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: In a series of experiments, with over 100 subjects ranging in age from 14 to 43, issues in the control of salivation were examined. Using the sublingual cotton swab technique it was shown that salivation can be controlled by practitioners and non-practitioners of transcendental meditation. Sex differences were unimportant; the use of specific imagery relating to food and anxiety aided control, and there was a highly significant relationship between the degree of self-reported imagery vividness and the ability to increase and decrease salivation. Results were discussed in terms of the Pavlovian notion of signalling systems, and the suggestion was made that self-generated imagery could be important for the control, and in the conditioning, of other autonomic effectors.

Notes: Data from a number of salivation studies were analyzed to see whether treatment effects are systematically related to prestimulus values; in other words, does the Law of Initial Value (LIV) hold. The diversity of techniques, methods, and subjects in the nine experiments studied, enabled a comprehensive assessment to be made. Results suggest that the Law does not consistently operate for salivation.

Notes: Techniques for assessing salivation were reviewed and several problem areas highlighted including measurement and reliability problems, and questions relating to sex and gland differences. Ten mate and 10 female undergraduate students took part in an experiment to examine critical issues and assess the comparability of the most frequently used techniques (whole mouth, parotid capsule, and cotton swabs). Results showed that methods were significantly intercorrelated, sex differences were minimal, and laterality effects small and inconsistent.

Notes: The influence of silver oxide additions on the fracture behavior of YBa2Cu3O7−x superconducting ceramic was studied. The KIC value has been found to increase from about 1 MPa(square root of)m to as much as 2.4 MPa(square root of)m with the blending of 30 wt.% Ag2O with the 1-2-3 powder. All compositions exhibited increasing resistance to fracture with crack extension. The addition of silver to the monolithic sintered structure not only raises the level of the KR curve, consistent with the rise in KIC, but also increases dKR/dΔa, indicative of an improvement in the cumulative toughening efficiency. Microstructural studies implicated crack face bridging by both the 1-2-3 grains, as well as the Ag component, as a major contribution to the observed improvement in toughening. The superconducting properties of these composites were not adversely affected by additions of up to 20% Ag2O.

Notes: A complete assignment of the six librational modes of the TCNQ0 crystal has been made employing both polarized Raman spectroscopic measurements and lattice dynamical calculations. Agreement between theory and experiment is good and modes at 40.5, 74.5, and 96 cm−1 are assigned as Ag active and those at 63, 75.5, and 104 cm−1 are Bg active. The lattice modes are found to be clearly separated from the molecular modes. The study emphasizes the importance of crystal optics and quality in the measurement of the polarized Raman spectra of biaxial crystals.

Notes: Previous full-wave models for rf heating in multidimensional plasmas have relied on either cold-plasma or finite Larmor radius approximations. These models assume that the perpendicular wavelength of the rf field is much larger than the ion Larmor radius, and they are therefore limited to relatively long wavelengths and low cyclotron harmonics. Recently, alternate full-wave models have been developed that eliminate these restrictions. These "all orders spectral algorithms" take advantage of new computational techniques for massively parallel computers to solve the integral form of the wave equation in multiple dimensions without any restriction on wavelength relative to orbit size, and with no limit on the number of cyclotron harmonics retained. These new models give high-resolution, two-dimensional solutions for mode conversion and high harmonic fast wave heating in tokamak geometry. In addition, they have been extended to give fully three-dimensional solutions of the integral wave equation for minority ion cyclotron heating in stellarator geometry. By combining multiple periodic solutions for individual helical field periods, it is possible to obtain complete wave solutions valid over the entire volume of the stellarator for arbitrary antenna geometry. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: An approach using piezomodulated Raman scattering is presented which permits determination of the molecular motions associated with the eigenmodes of molecular crystals. When coupled with a lattice dynamical calculation for the eigenmodes, the experiment can be used to validate the calculation. The case of 1,2,4,5-tetrabromobenzene is treated and it is shown that the phase relations of the piezomodulated Raman signals confirm the calculated eigenmodes.
