Notizen: Abstract We report measurements of nuclear magnetic resonance on oriented nuclei (NMR-ON) on94Tc (Iπ=7+,T 1/2=4.9 h),95Tc (I π=9/2+,T 1/2=20 h) and96Tc (I π=7+,T 1/2=4.3 d) in Fe and on95Tc and96Tc in Ni. In order to elucidate the discrepancies on the hyperfine field of TcFe in the literature, the resonances were measured with high precision as a function of the external magnetic field Bext up to 2.0 T. In addition, TDPAC measurements were performed on99TcFe at T=300 K and 13 K. TheT=0 K hyperfine fields of Tc in Fe and Ni were determined to be −314(3) kG and −51.8(5) kG, respectively. The g-factors of93Tc,94Tc,95Tc,96Tc and99Tc(E=181 keV;I π=5/2+) are redetermined as g(93Tc)=1.405(14), g(94Tc)=0.731(7),g(95Tc)=1.321(13), g(96Tc)=0.727(7), g(99Tc)=1.390(17).

Notizen: Abstract A mini transmissionγ-ray Compton polarimeter was developed for the measurement of the sign of magnetic moments of radioactive nuclei with low-temperature nuclear orientation. The signs of the magnetic moments of the following isotopes were determined:193Os [μ=+0.7297(16)μ N];191m Ir [μ=+6.20(9)μ N];192Ir [μ=+1.924(10)μ N];194Ir [μ=+0.39(1)μ N];195m Pt [μ=−0.605(15)μ N].

Notizen: Abstract New developments and new trends in NMR-ON are presented, especially in the context of precise measurements of nuclear magnetic moments and electric quadrupole moments of short-lived nuclei far off stability with on-line nuclear orientation techniques. The main emphasis is put on the following items: i) Quadrupole-interaction-resolved NMR-ON (QI-NMR-ON): It is shown that hcp-Co is an ideal matrix for precise measurements of electric quadrupole moments of radioactive nuclei in the region Hg, Au, Pt, Ir, Os. Recently, the first on-line experiment was performed successfully at NICOLE/ISOLDE-CERN and the very interesting quadrupole moment of186Au could be determined precisely. ii) General problems with lattice location and NMR-ON line widths in long decay chains, such as “lattice-site conservation” by implantation of a suitable precursor. iii) β-decay-induced lattice site change. In the context of integral nuclear orientation measurements on nuclei far off stability, where the β-decay energies become large, lattice site changes may occur, which make the interpretation of γ-anisotropies measured by integral and even time-differential techniques difficult or even impossible. A pilot experiment is described, in which such a β-decay-induced lattice site change has been identified by a double-resonance NMR-ON measurement.

Notizen: Abstract This paper presents off-line and on-line orientation results obtained with the new on line nuclear orientation device NICOLE in CERN. Magnetic moments of187,185Pt g and186Ir m , electric quadrupole moment ratios between Pt isotopes with mass number 185, 187 and 189, the spin of the 2 h isomer of186Ir and a new decay scheme of184Au involving a metastable state are established. The shape variation versus mass number of the Pt isotopes leads to sign change of the spectroscopic quadrupole moment between A=187 and 185.

Notizen: Abstract The methods of time-resolved and time-integral on-line nuclear orientation have been applied to study short lived nuclei with the NICOLE facility (Nuclear Implantation into Cold On-Line Equipment) at ISOLDE-3 in CERN using beams of182–186Hg. The half-lives in these decay chains are of the order of seconds and therefore comparable to the spin-lattice relaxation times of the nuclei in iron. As the relaxation rate depends strongly on the g-factor, g-factors of nuclei in the decay chains can be deduced from the observation of the time evolution of γ-ray anisotropy. Using this technique the existence of an isomer in184Au has been found and the g-factors of184Au,184mAu and182Au have been determined. Accurate half-lives have been extracted from the data. Time-integral nuclear orientation has been observed for short lived as well as longer lived isotopes of the Hg decay chains. From these measurements, after proper correction for incomplete relaxation, the magnetic moments of183mPt,183Ir and182Ir have been derived. The applicability of the time-resolved nuclear orientation technique for nuclei far from stability and its possible limitations is discussed.

Notizen: Abstract Recent developments in nuclear magnetic resonance on oriented nuclei (NMR-ON) are reviewed with the following main topics: (i) Measurement of magnetic moments. In this context the resonance shift of NMR-ON resonances with an external magnetic field is discussed critically. (ii) Resonance techniques for the measurement of electric quadrupole moments. It is shown that — with hcp-Co as host matrix — the techniques QI-NMR-ON (quadrupole-interaction-resolved NMR-ON) and MAPON (modulated adiabatic passage on oriented nuclei) have a tremendous potential for the measurement of quadrupole moments of radioactive nuclei. Data are presented for medium (Zr, Nb) and heavy elements (Ir, Pt, Au, Hg). With results on the 11/2− isomers in Au it is shown that MAPON yields highly precise quadrupole moments of states with half-lives of the order of seconds, for which no other technique with comparable precision exists up to now. In the case of90Nb it is demonstrated that MAPON allows also the measurement of very small quadrupole moments with high precision. (iii) Electric field gradients in cubic Fe, fcc-Co and Ni. MAPON experiments show a strong magnetic-field dependence of the “effective” quadrupole interaction; the implications are discussed. (iv)β-decay-induced lattice site change identified by a double-resonance NMR-ON measurement. The resulting change of the hyperfme interaction has severe consequences for the interpretation of time-integral and even time-differential nuclear orientation measurements on nuclei far off stability. (v) Spin-lattice relaxation for nuclei on non-substitutional lattice sites. Recent experiments support the global character of the spin-lattice relaxation, in contrast to the local character of the static magnetic hyperfine interaction. (vi) Magnetic-field dependence of the spin-lattice relaxation. Recent experiments with hcp-Co as host lattice strongly support the so-called enhancement factor model and disfavour the one-, two- or three-magnon processes postulated in the literature.
