Notes: Sources of root-mean-square (RMS) emittance growth are described for negative ion extractors in both volume and surface negative ion sources and plasma low-energy beam transport systems. For surface negative ion sources of the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory or Los Alamos National Laboratory [on Los Alamos Meson Particle Facility (LAMPF)], attention is paid to the nonlinear transverse emittance growth mechanism of the beam/warm plasma interaction. In some cases this is a large effect. In addition, non-normal sheath fields at a convertor are examined as a source of emittance growth. For volume sources, attention is paid to aberration production due to field penetration from the extractor, RMS emittance growth enhancement by a negatively biased plasma extraction electrode, and emittance growth caused by transverse extraction across a magnetic field. For both volume and surface sources, RMS emittance growth due to nonlinear aberration at the plasma extraction electrode is analyzed. Time-dependent contributions to emittance growth are also examined. Nonlinear saturation of ion acoustic waves caused by ion extraction from a warm plasma and beam transversal through a plasma are studied.

Notes: The various operating modes of TFTR require the use of a sophisticated system of magnetic diagnostics integrated with a feedback control system. This system has successfully controlled the plasma current and position over a range of major and minor radii, during strong compression, and will soon be used during intense neutral beam heating. Current and position values are held constant to within 2 kA and 1 cm. A wide variety of preoperational field measurements were required to determine proper compensation for dynamic stray fields due to eddy currents. Data from plasma profile diagnostics, such as bolometer arrays, Thomson scattering, soft x-ray diode array, and the scanning radiometer, have been compared to the absolute position deduced from magnetics. In addition to control functions, magnetic diagnostics on TFTR provide data on plasma current asymmetry, βθ, MHD fluctuations, loop voltage, and flux consumption. This paper will discuss the mechanical and electronic design constraints, as well as the analytic and calibration techniques required.

Notes: The preparation of fish oil concentrates containing only (n-3) polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) with different ratios of 20:5 (n-3)/22:6 (n-3) is described. Three groups of turbot were maintained on different diets containing: 1, 10% of the dry weight of the diet as natural fish oil, equivalent to 2.5% (n-3) PUFA and 0–23% (n-6) PUFA; 2, 10% of the dry weight of the diet as palmitic acid, i.e. no PUFA; 3, 8–7% palmitic acid and 1–3% of the dry weight as (n-3 PUFA and negligible (n-6) PUFA. Only the fish on the diet containing natural fish oil showed significant growth over a 15-week period. In addition there were high mortalities on the two experimental diets (2 and 3). Changing the ratio of 20:5 (n-3)/22:6 (n-3) from 13–8 to 2–2 in the diet containing 1 3% (n-3) PUFA and negligible (n-6) PUFA markedly decreased the mortalities. Fish fed the two experimental diets (2 and 3) developed gross changes in gill structure involving the disappearance of chloride cells, a ‘sloughing off’ of the epithelium along the primary and secondary filaments and an accumulation of cellular material in the inter-lamellar spaces. The tissue ultimately disintegrated to leave a skeleton of connective tissue and a mass of cellular material in the inter-lamellar spaces. It is concluded that 22:6 (n-3) is an essential fatty acid for turbot and that the gill epithelium is a sensitive indicator of this deficiency in this species.

Notes: The diameters, dry weights and calorific value of the eggs of seven gadoid species (cod, Gadus morhua, haddock, Melanogrammus aeglefinus, whiting, Merlangius merlangus, Norway pout, Trisopterus esmarkii, lythe. Pollachius pollachius, saithe, P. virens, ling. Molva molva) and one pleuronectid (plaice, Pleuronectes platessa) were measured. Ling eggs contain an oil globule; the eggs of the other species do not.Preservation in formaldehyde solution caused a small (〈4%) reduction in egg diameter but a large (15–30%) reduction in dry weight. There was no significant difference between the dry weights of unpreserved eggs weighed after (a) oven-drying at 60° C or (b) freeze-drying. Equations relating the dry weight of unpreserved eggs to unpreserved diameter and to preserved diameter are given for six species, and general equations that may apply to all North Sea gadoids whose eggs lack an oil globule are calculated. The calorific values of the dried, unpreserved eggs of all species except ling were similar (mean 23.19 kJ g−1, S.D. 1.50) but the value for ling was higher (mean 26.92 kJ g−1, S.D. 2.29). The estimated energy content (kJ 1000 eggs−1) of eggs of each species are tabulated.

Notes: Summary It is uncertain whether localized lesions of serosal membranes have a kinship to mesotheliomas or are truly fibromatous in nature. Ultrastructural and immunohistochemical investigations were carried out on 12 localized benign and malignant pleural and peritoneal tumours from 10 patients. Electron microscopic findings, including the consistent and non-fibroblastic cellular organization of localized neoplasms, the presence of some form of intercellular junctions in 7 of 10 cases, basal lamina deposition in 3 cases, and polarized microvilli in one case indicated a form of mesothelial differentiation. Using monoclonal and polyclonal antibodies, positive immunostaining of tumour cells for cytokeratin peptides was detected in one case, while antibody to vimentin stained four cases. Light microscopic, ultrastructural and immunohistochemical features of one benign localized serosal tumour, with a unique blend of epithelial and spindle cells, provided further evidence for a histogenic link between localized serosal tumours and diffuse epithelial mesotheliomas. On the basis of the current findings and reports in the literature, it would appear that the majority of localized tumours of serosal membranes are a subset of mesothelioma, while a minority are fibromas.

Notes: Summary The locus DXS134 (cpX67) has been physically linked to the cluster of polymorphic loci DXS52, DXS15, and DXS33. A comparison of physical and genetic distance indicates a high rate of recombination in this region.

Notes: Abstract The effects of soil sterilization and inoculation with vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (VAMF) on VAMF colonization, nutrition and growth of peanut plants (cv. Virginia Bunch) were investigated in an Oxisol soil in pots in the glasshouse. Sterilization, nutrient and inoculation treatments were applied to soil with a history of either continuous summer cropping (〉50 years) or continuous grass pasture. Root colonization by VAMF was strongly affected by sterilization of soil from both cropping histories. Irradiation and aerated steam treatments virtually eliminated VAMF colonization; methyl bromide+chloropicrin caused an early reduction in colonization which was no longer visible twenty-one days after flowering; and DD+methyl isothiocyanate caused no significant reduction. Despite earlier differences in VAMF colonization of roots, plant growth responses were not recorded until after flowering. Plant growth 21 days after flowering was strongly correlated with VAMF colonization at first flower and at 21 days after first flower. Effective soil sterilization caused significant reductions in plant growth which were eliminated by addition of VAMF inoculum. Growth reductions in the absence of VAMF could be directly related to severe P deficiency, which was reflected in P uptake as early as first flower; Zn uptake was also reduced. Although VAMF colonization was slightly higher in grassland than in continuously cropped soil, growth responses to VAMF inoculation were not observed in unsterilized soil regardless of cropping history, indicating a general adequacy of resident VAMF populations. Plants grew better in untreated cropped soil than in grassland soil although growth was poor in both after effective soil sterilization. These differences could be related to the higher level of available P in the cropped soil and the inability of plants to access this P in the absence of VAMF. Regular applications of N-free nutrient solution had no effect on plant growth even in effectively sterilized soil, suggesting a threshold response to P in the absence of VAMF in this soil.
