    Notes: Observation of energy-dependent transmission of nonequilibrium minority electrons through a symmetric double-barrier (DB) quantum well heterostructure is reported. The DB is placed in the base of a GaInAs/AlInAs bipolar transistor. The electrons are launched into the DB with variable kinetic energies using a tunnel barrier in the emitter and varying the emitter-base voltage. The resulting peak in the collector current provides for the first time evidence of quasi-ballistic resonant tunneling of minority carriers into the eigenstates of a quantum well. The small peak-to-valley ratio and the broad peak also demonstrate the importance of scattering and of the anisotropy in momentum space of the incident distribution function in the region between the ballistic electron launcher and the DB.

    Notes: The problem of maintaining the oxygen stoichiometry of the Y1Ba2Cu3Ox (the so-called 123) compound at the desired level of x=6.0±0.1 when fabricating superconducting wires using the powder-in-tube method is addressed. A solution to this problem appears to be incorporating an unstable oxide like Ag2O in the core material, such that it acts as an in situ oxygen donor during the final sintering or annealing stage. Moreover, the segregation of Ag at the grain boundaries of the 123 grains and at the porosities seems to be a possible reason for the considerable improvement of the critical current density Jc of these wires. The effect of processing parameters, like different sintering temperatures and addition of various percentages of either Ag or Ag2O, is presented. Finally, in order to test conservation of superconductive properties during handling, the wires were subjected to different degrees of bending, and the subsequent effect on superconducting transition temperature, Tc and Jc, is reported.

    Notes: At North Carolina State University, we have recently employed photoassisted molecular beam epitaxy to successfully prepare p-type modulation-doped HgCdTe. The modulation-doped HgCdTe samples were grown on lattice-matched (100) CdZnTe substrates cut from boules grown at Santa Barbara Research Center. In this letter, we report details of the growth experiments and describe the structural, optical, and electrical properties that this new infrared quantum alloy of HgCdTe possesses.

    Notes: A fabrication technique for producing bulk and irregular-shaped aluminum/high Tc superconductor composites by traditional powder metallurgy method is reported. During the course of fabrication, the oxygen stoichiometry can be maintained at the desired level in order to retain superconductivity by addition of certain metal oxides or metal carbonates with low oxidation tendency, e.g., Ag2O, Ag2CO3, and CdO. Moreover, replacement of oxygen with fluorine is also possible by addition of certain unstable fluorides like AgF. Superconductivity measurements of Al/YBa2Cu3Ox random composites with additions of different oxygen or fluorine donors show a similiar or improved Tc in comparison to the pure 123 compound. The concept of oxygen/fluorine donor can also be used in other fabrication techniques of metal/123 composites to stabilize the oxygen/fluorine stoichiometry.

    Notes: Attempts to identify nutritional requirements of anthers of eight indica rice cultvars (Oryza sativa L. spp. Indica) for callus induction in vitro and green plant regeneration were made. The requirements varied with the genotype. Some cultivars, however, possessed a wide range of adaptability to diverse nutritional conditions. Indica rice is highly sensitive to the presence of NH+4, and MgSO4 in the medium. High sucrose concentration (11%) was deleterious for callus induction and green plant regeneration. Sucrose at 3 to 5% was optimal for growth. Auxins at high concentrations promoted regeneration of albino plants. The presence of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (9.0 μM) supplemented with picloram (0,3 μM) and zcatin (0.5 μM) was effective for callus induction. A combined pretreatment of 35°C for 5 min followed by 10°C for 7 days was most suitable for callus induction and green plant regeneration.

    Notes: Abstract The duality between facets of the convex hull of disjunctive sets and the extreme points of reverse polars of these sets is utilized to establish simple rules for the derivation of all facet cuts for simple disjunctions, namely, elementary disjunctions in nonnegative variables. These rules generalize the cut generation procedure underlying polyhedral convexity cuts with negative edge extensions. The latter are also shown to possess some interesting properties with respect to a biextremal problem that maximizes the distance, from the origin, of the nearest point feasible to the cut. A computationally inexpensive procedure is given to generate facet cuts for simple disjunctions which are dominant with respect to any specified preemptive ordering of variables.

    Notes: Abstract In this paper we test directly for the restrictions implied by rational expectations and structural neutrality. The tests are direct in the sense that they employ theLucas output equation father than the approximations to it, which replace the lagged output term by lagged monetary shocks, commonly considered in the literature. The direct approach is considered preferable because it avoids these ad hoc approximations and saves significantly on degrees of freedom. The latter permits us to pursue a fully nested testing procedure, which was not possible in earlier work employing postwar U.K. annual data. The main result is that the rational expectations restrictions are not accepted.

    Notes: Abstract Two circle theorems for two-dimensional steady Stokes flow are presented. The first theorem gives an expression for the stream function for a Stokes flow past a circular cylinder in terms of the stream function for a slow and steady irrotational flow in an unbounded incompressible viscous fluid. The second theorem gives a more general expression for the stream function for another Stokes flow past the circular cylinder in terms of the stream function for a slow and steady rotational flow in the same fluid.

    Notes: Abstract The Gibbs free energy and volume changes attendant upon hydration of cordierites in the system magnesian cordierite-water have been extracted from the published high pressure experimental data at $$P_{{\text{H}}_{\text{2}} {\text{O}}} $$ =P total, assuming an ideal one site model for H2O in cordierite. Incorporating the dependence of ΔG and ΔV on temperature, which was found to be linear within the experimental conditions of 500°–1,000°C and 1–10,000 bars, the relation between the water content of cordierite and P, T and $$f_{{\text{H}}_{\text{2}} {\text{O}}} $$ has been formulated as $$\begin{gathered} X_{{\text{H}}_{\text{2}} {\text{O}}}^{{\text{crd}}} = \hfill \\ \frac{{f_{{\text{H}}_{\text{2}} {\text{O}}}^{{\text{P, T}}} }}{{\left[ {{\text{exp}}\frac{1}{{RT}}\left\{ {64,775 - 32.26T + G_{{\text{H}}_{\text{2}} {\text{O}}}^{{\text{1, }}T} - P\left( {9 \times 10^{ - 4} T - 0.5142} \right)} \right\}} \right] + f_{{\text{H}}_{\text{2}} {\text{O}}}^{{\text{P, T}}} }} \hfill \\ \end{gathered} $$ The equation can be used to compute H2O in cordierites at $$P_{{\text{H}}_{\text{2}} {\text{O}}} $$ 〈1. Our results at different P, T and partial pressure of water, assuming ideal mixing of H2O and CO2 in the vapour phase, are in very good agreement with the experimental data of Johannes and Schreyer (1977, 1981). Applying the formulation to determine $$X_{{\text{H}}_{\text{2}} {\text{O}}}^{{\text{crd}}} $$ in the garnet-cordierite-sillimanite-plagioclase-quartz granulites of Finnish Lapland as a test case, good agreement with the gravimetrically determined water contents of cordierite was obtained. Pressure estimates, from a thermodynamic modelling of the Fe-cordierite — almandine — sillimanite — quartz equilibrium at $$P_{{\text{H}}_{\text{2}} {\text{O}}} = 0$$ and $$P_{{\text{H}}_{\text{2}} {\text{O}}} $$ =Ptotal, for assemblages from South India, Scottish Caledonides, Daly Bay and Hara Lake areas are compatible with those derived from the garnetplagioclase-sillimanite-quartz geobarometer.

(1978) and Saxena and Erikson (1983). The activities of pyroxene components and anorthite in plagioclase have been modelled after Wood and Banno (1973) and Newton (1983) respectively. The activities of pyrope and almandine are calculated from the binary interaction parameters for garnet solid solutions proposed by Saxena and Erikson (1983). Pressures computed from these equations for fifty sets of published mineral data from several granulite areas are comparable with those obtained from dependable geobarometers. The pressure values determined from the Fe-end member equilibrium appear to be more reasonable than those from the Mg-end member reaction. It is likely that the difference in pressures computed from the Fe- and Mg-end members, ΔP *, have been caused by non-ideal mixing in the phases, especially in garnets.
