Notizen: The types of free radicals formed in decrystallized cellulose prepared from cellulose I and II after γ-irradiation in nitrogen atmosphere at room temperature were studied by ESR spectroscopy. X-Ray diffraction revealed that decrystallized cellulose I and II have the same microstructure. The ESR spectra obtained with the γ-irradiated decrystallized samples are simple. By contacting the irradiated sample with moisture in nitrogen atmosphere, the ESR spectrum changed to a narrow singlet, which gradually decreased in intensity until the spectrum completely disappeared. It was found that the types of free radicals generated in the decrystallized cellulose by γ-irradiation consist of the overlap of singlet and doublet. The singlet spectrum is mainly attributed to alkoxyl radical formed by the rupture of glycosidic linkage at the C 1 or C 4 position, and the doublet spectrum is ascribed to radical formed by hydrogen abstraction from the C 1 position in cellulose molecule.

Notizen: In relation to sterilization of medical supplies, the degree of degradation by γ-ray and electron beam irradiations of homopolypropylene (HP), copolypropylene (CP, coplymer including 6% of ethylene unit) and polymethylpentene were compared, and chemiluminescence (CL) of irradiated polymers were measured. HP degraded extremely around the sterilization dose (2.5 Mrad) by either γ-ray or electron beam irradiations. In the case of CP and polymethylpentene, stabilities of polymers far differed between γ-ray and electron beam irradiations. The polymethylpentene was more stable than the polypropylenes against irradiation. The counts of CL emitted by recombination of peroxy radical (ROO ·) increased with increasing dose, reflecting degrees of oxidation of polymers. The degradation of polymers was independent of irradiation sources, rather it depended on the degree of oxidation. It was found that CL analysis are favorable for estimation of degradation in irradiated polymers.

Notizen: The types of free radicals produced in the water-accessible regions of cellulose I and cellulose II fibers by γ-irradiation in nitrogen atmosphere at room temperature were studied by ESR spectroscopy. The ESR spectra of the irradiated cellulose I and II change by contacting the fibers with water, and after immersion in water the spectral shape depends on the orientation of the fiber axes to the magnetic field. These spectra are probably related to the free radicals generated in the highly ordered regions inaccessible to water in irradiated cellulosic fibers. The ESR spectrum of free radicals generated in decrystallized cellulose after irradiation consists of a singlet and a doublet. When the ESR spectra of free radicals formed in the highly ordered regions of cellulose I and II and the singlet and the doublet are combined in adequate ratio, the constructed spectra are similar to those of the radicals scavenged by water in the irradiated cellulose I and II fibers. From these facts, the spectra due to the free radicals in the water-accessible regions in irradiated cellulose I and II are considered to consist of the singlet and the doublet formed by free radicals in the typical amorphous regions and the spectra of other types of radicals generated in the semicrystalline regions.

Notizen: The fine texture and molecular motion in rolled (draw ratios λ = 2, λ = 5), cold-drawn (λ = 6), and hot-drawn (λ = 6), linear polyethylene (Sholex 6050) films were studied by small-angle x-ray scattering, wide-line nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and dynamic viscoelastic measurements. NMR spectra of the rolled (λ = 5) and cold-drawn samples show a small narrow component at room temperature. For these cold-deformed samples, a gradual decrease in the second moment is observed well below the α relaxation temperature and a new relaxation appears in the same temperature region in the logarithmic decrement versus temperature. This relaxation is absent in the original and hot-drawn samples. It is concluded that the new relaxation arises from molecular motion in intermediate regions where molecular chains are less mobile than in the amorphous state.

Notizen: The original morphology of polytetrafluoroethylene prepared by radiation-induced emulsion polymerization was studied by electron microscopy. The morphology depends on molecular weight, which in turn depends on polymerization conditions, especially the emulsifier concentration. The molecular weight decreases with increasing emulsifier concentration. The morphology changes with molecular weight roughly as follows: fibrils below 105, rods between 105 and 5 × 105, and granular particle above 106. The crystallinity is high for all morphologies.

Notizen: It is shown that there exists a difference in the electron spin resonance spectrum of poly(methyl methacrylate) irradiated with electrons and observed at 77°K. and that at room temperature. One of the radicals trapped at 77°K. is probably ·COOCH3, which gives the spectrum of a single line, and the others giving triplet and quartet are perhaps ·CHO and ·CH3, the splitting of which are 132 gauss and 23 gauss, respectively. With the elevation of the annealing temperature the unstable radicals recombine or convert to the stable radicals; near room temperature they are completely replaced by the stable radical which gives the nine-line spectrum.

Notizen: The regions trapping allyl radicals in irradiated polyethylene and the reactivity of the radicals with various monomers have been studied by electron spin resonance. Most of the allyl radicals are trapped in defects or surfaces of the crystallite, and only 10% of the radicals are trapped inside the crystallites. Since the reactivity of the allyl radicals depends on whether they come in contact with reactive monomers, the rate of reaction is related to the concentration of the monomers. When grafting reactions are initiated by allyl radicals, the rate of initiation is rapid and the rate of termination at the initial stage is also very fast. Consequently the yield of grafting increases at the initial stage but soon levels off, which is in contrast to the grafting behavior with alkyl radicals.

Notizen: The behavior of trapped radicals in polyethylene which is irradiated in air at room temperature, under grafting of methylmechacrylate or butadiene has been studied by electron spin resonance. Part of the alkyl radicals are converted to allyl radicals by reaction with double bonds and the others disappear by recombination under vacuum. The active species of grafting are alkyl radicals when the vapor pressure of monomers is relatively high, while at low pressure allyl radicals also play a role as well as alkyl radicals. In the grafting at 20°C, the grafting yields depend mainly on the decay rate of alkyl radicals which come out of the crystalline regions of polyethylene. The decay rate of alkyl radicals and the rate of grafting at the initial stage increase with decreasing crystallite size of polyethylene.
