Notizen: Cerium oxides are used as surrogates for plutonium oxides because of the similarities in their thermodynamic properties. In this study, the stability limits of both CeGaO3 and PuGaO3 with respect to the partial pressure of oxygen and temperature have been predicted by theoretical calculations. Using the results of the calculations as guidance, mixtures of CeO2 and Ga2O3 have been prepared and thermally treated at 1273, 1473, and 1673 K, in atmosphere of air, argon, or Ar–6% H2. In the samples annealed under low oxygen partial pressures, the CeGaO3 perovskite-type compound was identified. Based on Rietveld structure refinement, the orthorhombic space group (Pnma, 62) was confirmed.

Notizen: Reactions between SiC and mullite in an Ar plasma were investigated using a model composite in which a free-standing CVD SiC coupon was imbedded in mullite cement. After treatment in a radio frequency (RF) plasma, the Si content of the mullite in contact with SiC was found to be less than that in the starting material, and deposits were found on the walls of the plasma chamber due to the reaction of mullite with SiC as follows: Al6Si2O13(s)+ SiC(s)= 3Al2O3(s)+ 3SiO(g)+ CO(g). This reaction, which is endothermic (1405 kJ/mol at 1500 K), absorbs thermal energy and consequently prevents the rapid sintering which is observed for single-phase mullite in similar environments. As a consequence, it is suggested that RF plasma sintering probably cannot be used to densify SiC-reinforced mullite-matrix composites because of the resulting energy consumption and damage to the SiC phase.

Notizen: In this study, we investigated the kinetics and products of the oxidation of MoSi2 powder with an average particle size of 1.6 μm at 900°, 1000°, and 1100°C, using a small sample size of 0.5 g. Such a small sample size allowed us to minimize the effect of oxygen transportation through the powder volume, while maintaining a good relative weighing accuracy. X-ray diffraction of oxidized samples indicated the formation of Mo5Si3 and Mo metal. Analysis of the oxidation kinetics suggested that gaseous MoO3 formed initially and amorphous SiO2 film later. The oxidation kinetics and products observed in this study differ from those reported in an early study, in which a larger sample size was used.

Notizen: The oxidation process of MoSi2 is very complex, and controversial results have been reported, especially for the early-stage oxidation before the formation of passive SiO2 film. Most oxidation studies have been carried out on bulk consolidated samples, and the early stage of oxidation has not been studied. In this investigation, very fine MoSi2 powder with an average particle size of 1.6 μm was used. Such a fine particle size makes it easier to study the early stages of oxidation since a significant portion of the powder is oxidized before the formation of passive SiO2 film. The oxidation kinetics of commercial MoSi2-SiC and MoSi2-Si3N4 powder mixtures were also studied for comparison. Weight changes were measured at discrete time intervals at 500° to 1100°C in 0.14 atm of oxygen. X-ray diffraction was used to identify the phases formed during oxidation. Our results show the formation of MoO3 phase and an associated weight gain at low temperatures (500° and 600°C). At temperatures higher than 900°C, Mo5Si3 phase formed first and was subsequently oxidized to solid SiO2 and volatile MoO3, resulting in an initial weight gain followed by subsequent weight loss. A model based on the assumption that oxidation kinetics of both MoSi2 and Mo5Si3 are proportional to their fractions in the system describes the experimental data well.

Notizen: The mechanical behavior of MoSi2 reinforced–Si3N4 matrix composites was investigated as a function of MoSi2 phase content, MoSi2 phase size, and amount of MgO densification aid for the Si3N4 phase. Coarse-phase MoSi2-Si3N4 composites exhibited higher room-temperature fracture toughness than fine-phase composites, reaching values 〉8 MP·am1/2. Composite fracture toughness levels increased at elevated temperature. Fine-phase composites were stronger and more creep resistant than coarse phase composites. Room-temperature strengths 〉1000 MPa and impression creep rates of ∼10−8 s−1 at 1200°C were observed. Increased MgO levels generally were deleterious to MoSi2-Si3N4 mechanical properties. Internal stresses due to MoSi2 and Si3N4 thermal expansion coefficient mismatch appeared to contribute to fracture toughening in MoSi2-Si3N4 composites.

Notizen: The oxidation of Nicalon fibers is a concern, because of its potential as a reinforcement of high-temperature composites, whose service conditions involve high-temperature, oxidizing environments. Two limiting types of oxidation mechanisms are often used to describe the kinetics: chemical-reaction-controlled oxidation, at small oxide thicknesses, and diffusion-controlled oxidation, at large oxide thicknesses. Neither mechanism can satisfactorily describe the intermediate region where the oxidation kinetics are controlled jointly by both the chemical reaction rate at the interface and the diffusion of oxygen through the oxide layer. To describe the entire oxidation process with a general relationship, one must consider all stages of the oxidation process, namely (i) adsorption of oxygen at the outer surface of the oxide, (ii) diffusion of oxygen from the outer surface toward the interface where oxidation occurs, and (iii) reaction at the interface to form a new layer of oxide. Previously, a very useful general relationship was derived for the oxidation kinetics for a flat plate, which could account for all three stages of oxidation. However, that equation is inadequate to describe the oxidation of cylindrical fibers, because the effective area for oxygen diffusion changes along the diffusion path and the oxidation interfacial area decreases as the oxide thickness increases for cylindrical fibers. In this paper, we have derived a general kinetic relationship for the oxidation of cylindrical fibers, which can account for all stages of oxidation. Comparison of the theory with experimental data of Nicalon fibers shows good agreement.

Notizen: The oxidation kinetics of hexagonal-shaped Si whiskers at high temperature were studied. Si whiskers were oxidized at 1000°C under a partial oxygen pressure of 0.14 atm. Oxide thickness was measured using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). A unique model was developed to describe the oxidation kinetics of hexagonal-shaped fibers. The model takes into account the inward diffusion of oxygen, oxidation reaction at the oxide/Si interface, and the fiber diameter change caused by the molar volume difference between SiO2 and Si. Comparison of the model with experimental data shows good agreement.

Notizen: Abstract The oxidation kinetics of Titanium alloys containing nominally 5, 40, and 60 weight percent Ta were measured for 16 hr in nitrogen-20% oxygen. In all three alloys at each temperature tested oxidation rates in the nitrogen-oxygen mixture were significantly lower than those previously measured in argon-20% oxygen or pure oxygen. Using X-ray diffraction and electron microprobe a nitrogen rich layer was identified in the scale near the scale/metal interface. This layer apparently acts as an oxygen-diffusion barrier, as demonstrated by the reduced depth of oxygen penetration in the metal relative to identical specimens oxidized in nitrogen free atmospheres.
