Abstract: Résumé Les spectres d'absorption de CeCl3·7 H2O, LaCl3·7 H2O, CeCl3·7 D2O et LaCl3·7 D2O ont été mesurés à basses températures dans la région des transitions infrarouges 4 f→4 f.
Notes: Abstract The absorption spectra of CeCl3·7 H2O, LaCl3·7 H2O, CeCl3·7 D2O and LaCl3·7 D2O have been measured at low temperatures in the region of the 4 f→4 f infrared transitions. The energy levels of the Ce3+-ion in these compounds have been derived. The infrared phonon transitions have also been determined from the reflection spectra of these crystals measured in the region between 4000 cm−1 and 50 cm−1. Some of the energy levels of the Ce3+-ions in the deuterated crystals are shifted for about 10 wavenumbers against those in CeCl3·7 H2O. These shifts are probably due to an interaction of the electronic levels with resonant phonon-states in one or the other of the two compounds.

Notes: Abstract A survey is given of the possible types of double perturbations, produced by simultaneous substitution of two impurity ions in the neighbourhood of a non-Kramers ion in a trigonal lattice. The transition of the energy levels of RM-nitrate by substitution of M′ to those of RM′-nitrate is discussed.

Notes: Abstract Satellite lines were observed in the absorption spectrum of the solid solution Pr2Mg3cZn3(1-c)(NO3)12·24H2O (c≈0,01) and compared with the satellite lines in the spectrum of the complementary solid solution Pr2Zn3c Mg3(1-c )(NO3)12·24H2O. Matrix elements of the crystal field perturbation energy were determined. This additional energy, due to substitution of foreign ions on lattice sites, has nearly the same magnitude but opposite sign in the two complementary systems.

Notes: Abstract By substitution of an impurity ion, M′2+, for a divalent M2+-ion, symmetric and asymmetric distortions may be produced in the lattice of the rare earth double nitrates, R2M3(NO3)12·24H2O. These distortions give rise to rare earth satellite levels, the energy shift and Zeeman effect of which are calculated in a first order approximation. The results are quite general for non-Kramers rare earth ions on trigonal sites in any other lattices.

Notes: Abstract The Zeeman effect of main and satellite lines was observed in the absorption spectrum of the solid solution Pr2Zn3cMg3(1-c)(NO3)12·24H2O, (c≈0,05). A symmetric and two asymmetric lattice distortions, due to substitution of some Zn-ions for Mg-ions, were identified from the satellite lines. Matrix elements of the crystal field perturbation energy were determined.

Notes: Abstract The absorption spectra of solid solutions Pr2Mg3c Zn3(1-c)·(NO3)12·24 H2O were re-examined with higher spectral resolution and in higher magnetic fields. At low concentrations (c≈0.02 andc≈0.98) some new satellite lines were detected, which enable a new analysis of the whole satellite line structure due to substitution of single impurity ions in the neighbourhood of a Pr3+-ion ("single perturbations"). A third type of asymmetric lattice distortions has been detected. At higher concentrations (c≈0.10 andc≈0.90) faint new satellite lines have been observed, which are ascribed to "double perturbations" by substitution of two impurity ions near a Pr3+-ion. Matrix-elements of the additional energy were newly evaluated for all observed single and double crystal field perturbations.

Abstract: Abstract The paramagnetic relaxation of a single crystal of CeCl3·7H2O has been studied by the dispersion-absorption-method at temperatures between 1,1 and 4,2°K. Alternating magnetic fields with frequencies between 5 and 2660 Hz and parallel magnetic fields up to 4000 Oe have been used. The spin lattice relaxation time has been determined as a function of temperature. At two special rangesH 1 andH 4 of the magnetic field a second, temperature-independent dispersion-absorption region has been observed besides the temperature-dependent spin-lattice relaxation (double relaxation). At two other special magnetic fieldsH 2 andH 3 the anomalous field dependence of the high frequency adiabatic susceptibility suggests a second dispersion-absorption-region ocurring at frequencies, which we cannot attain experimentally. In all cases cross relaxation processes are combined with the spin lattice relaxation.
