Description / Table of Contents:
Summary The tacticity of polyacrylonitril can be determined from the high resolution NMR spectrum. The resonance of theβ-protons consists of two overlapping triplets and the triplet at higher (lower) field is assigned to methylene protons in syndiotactic (isotactic) units. The resonance of theα-protons is complicated by spinspin-coupling and overlapping. Decoupled from theβ-protons, theα-resonance exhibits three components, which are tentatively assigned to the central monomer units in syndiotactic, heterotactic, and isotactic triads, with increasing field strength, respectively. Various samples, polymerized between +70 °C and −78 °C consist all of nearly 60% isotactic units. Polymerization of acrylonitril in isobutyraldehyde is not accompanied with an increase of syndiotacticity, but the polymers have low molecular weights and aldehyde endgroups, allowing the determination of the molecular weights from the IR and NMR spectra. The NMR spectra of polyacrylonitrils, polymerized by anionic initiators show new resonances, indicating, that, especially at elevated temperatures, the CN linkages are changed during polymerization.
Notes:
