Notes: Carbon films were deposited by rf bias sputtering of a carbon target in argon. Bias voltage and argon pressure were varied systematically. Hardness, internal stress, density, hydrogen content, and infrared absorption were measured as functions of the preparation parameters. From the IR measurements the bond ratio of sp3 to sp2 was calculated and the total amount of hydrogen in the films was determined by elastic recoil detection. The hydrogen content was found to be much lower than for films prepared by plasma decomposition of hydrocarbons. Because the film thickness was in the range of 500 nm, the hardness was measured with an ultralow-load diamond indenter. For these measurements the indentation depth was about 60 nm. The internal stress was determined by the bending beam method. The coordination number, number density, and the filling factor were calculated from the measured values. The results have been compared to those for films deposited by plasma decomposition of hydrocarbons.

Notes: Diamondlike a-C:H films have been deposited by decomposition of C2H2. By the combination of Brillouin scattering and the ultralow load indentation technique, the following mechanical properties of the films were studied: the microhardness H, the Young's modulus E, the shear modulus μ, and the Poisson's ratio ν. From the measured data of mass density, hydrogen concentration, and the ratio of sp3/sp2 bonds the filling factors of these films were calculated. The results show that the hardness, Young's modulus, and shear modulus of these films depend strongly on the volume concentration of voids and are directly proportional to the filling factor.

Notes: Gas evolution experiments have been performed on hydrogenated amorphous carbon (a-C:H) films prepared by plasma deposition. Two series of films are studied: in series I, C2H2 is used as a process gas at a fixed bias voltage while the gas pressure is varied, and in series II, CH4 is employed at a fixed gas pressure, and the bias voltage is changed. The results are compared to infrared absorption data and density measurements and support the presence of a void network in the amorphous material, the extent of the void network depending on the deposition conditions.

Notes: Carbon films have been deposited by rf plasma decomposition of methane at 50–1400 V negative bias and 1.3×10−3–1.3×10−1 mbar pressure. Hardness, internal stress, density, hydrogen content, and infrared absorption depending on the preparation parameters have been measured. From the IR measurements the ratio of sp3 to sp2 bonds was calculated and the total amount of hydrogen in the films was determined by elastic recoil detection (0.5〉H/C〉0.15). We found in the range of bias voltages 0〈||−VB ||〈100 V polymerlike films, in the range 100 V〈||−VB ||〈600 V diamondlike hard carbon films with high internal stress, and in the range 600〈||−VB ||〈1400 V graphitelike soft films with low stress. The density of the diamondlike films was about 2 g/cm3 and of the graphitelike films about 1.4 g/cm3. The microhardness seems to be correlated to the internal mechanical stress.

Notes: It has been found that by the deposition of a thin layer of LiF on rock-salt cleavage faces the epitaxial growth of Ag, Al, Cu, Cr, Fe, V, and Mo will be improved markedly. The simultaneous growth of the metals on air-cleaved rock-salt substrates and on air-cleaved rock-salt faces covered with a LiF interlayer before the metal deposition have been compared by transmission electron microscopy and x-ray rocking curves.

Notes: Abstract— The isolation of a perchloric acid-soluble low molecular weight protein from brain of Macaca irus is reported. Sodium dodecyl sulphate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and gel isoelectric focusing indicate that the protein is free of impurities. The molecular weight, as determined by gel filtration and sodium dodecyl sulphate gel electrophoresis, is shown to be 10,400 and 9900, respectively. This is in agreement with the value of 10,700 obtained from amino acid analysis. The protein contains 27 per cent acid amino acids and 15 per cent basic amino acids. However, the relatively high amide content gives the protein a neutral nature as shown by isoelectric point determination using gel isoelectric focusing.

Notes: —The formation of peptido-amines from acetylaspartic acid and histamine incubated with amino acids Glu, Gly, Ser, Ala and GABA is described. The incubation was performed using a 16000 g× 30 min supernatant extract of hypothalamic tissue which had been cleared of small molecular weight compounds by passage through a G-25 Sephadex column.

Notes: Abstract— Following intracranial and intraperitoneal injection of acetyl-l-[U-14C]aspartate into mice about 5% and 0.7% of the radioactivity, respectively, was recovered from the brain after 30 min.On chromatographic separation of the cationic and anionic compounds on a Dowex 50 column, the former fraction contained about 60% of the radioactivity, predominantly as labelled aspartate and glutamate. The anionic compounds, containing 20% of the labelled compounds, were fractionated in several chromatographic systems and resolved into a great variety of labelled peptidic compounds of which five acetyl-[U14-C]aspartyl peptides, containing two to four amino acids, were purified. One of these, acetyl-aspartyl glutamine, has not previously been found in brain.

Notes: Abstract— The formation of N-acetyl-aspartyl-peptides in mouse brain homogenates is described. The formation is completely dependent on histamine and on an ATP-regenerating system, and partially dependent on the addition of N-acetyl-aspartate and certain other amino acids. The N-acetyl-aspartyl-peptide formation is probably non-ribosomal and is apparently not due to hydrolysis of preformed proteins.
