Notizen: O, Sr and C isotopes from east-central Vermont are used to provide information on the timing and volume of metamorphic fluid flow. The results are then used to assess the evidence for redox transformations between C species. Oxygen profiles are homogenised on a metre scale; comparison with Sr isotopes suggest that O alteration may have occurred over a significantly larger timescale than that of Sr, possibly because O was modified during dewatering and diagenesis in addition to the high temperature alteration recorded by strontium. Sr isotope distributions are consistent with cross-layer fluid fluxes of 104−106 moles m−2; absolute values depend on the Sr fluid-rock distribution coefficient which is poorly known; however, reaction progress constraints suggest that fluxes were towards the lower end of this range. High δ13C values observed at lithological boundaries cannot be explained by volume loss or closed system processes and are taken to indicate reductive precipitation of graphite as a result of mixing between CO2 and CH4-bearing fluids. Mass balance calculations indicate that redox reactions occurring under metamorphic conditions convert a minimum of 10% of the CO2 released from limestones into graphite, thus providing a potentially important control on the average residence time of C within the crust with implications for C cycling models.

Notizen: The Advanced Photon Source (APS) has been in operational mode for more than 5 yr. Currently there are over 40 beamlines in various phases of operation. The control system of choice at the APS is the Experimental Physics and Industrial Control System (EPICS). We have provided various interfaces to the beamlines from the APS control system. An overview of the various systems will be discussed. The General Control System Information (GCSI) uses dedicated computers as EPICS process variable gateways to provide data from the APS control system to each beamline. The GCSI architecture makes the APS control system secure, yet has the flexibility of providing access control to any data available on the APS control system. In addition, the gateway reduces the load on the APS control system equipment by making only one connection for each process variable accessed by multiple users. Each sector, consisting of a bending magnet and insertion device beamlines, is provided its own gateway, which resides on the local sector network. This scheme has the advantage of providing network security and more reliable operation. To provide real-time accelerator data to beamlines, each sector has been provided a chassis to display the storage ring current and other relevant information. These data are transmitted via a direct fiber link from the APS control system hardware to the beamlines. The beamlines are also provided VME-based hardware and associated EPICS software to retrieve key information provided via this fiber link. Some of the information on this link is beam current, lifetime, injection status, and sector specific information such as shutter status, insertion device gap, and energy, and storage ring and front-end beam position monitor signals. The data rates on this link are typically 10 Hz but can be as high as 272 kHz. This scheme allows the beamlines using EPICS-based software to seamlessly use the data from the APS control system without excessively impacting the system. For high-precision x-ray timing experiments, a new scheme has been designed to distribute the radio-frequency timing signals to the beamlines. Using VME-based hardware and EPICS software, the bunch clock signal is generated at the beamline for use in timing experiments. Data are provided at the radio frequency of 352 MHz. Beamlines have also been provided with hardware and software to generate the bunch clock signal for timing experiments. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: [Auszug] Much of global gold production has come from deposits with uneconomic concentrations of base metals, such as copper, lead and zinc. These ‘gold-only’ deposits are thought to have formed from hot, aqueous fluids rich in carbon dioxide, but only minor significance has been attached to ...

Notizen: Abstract Theoretical and empirical arguments are used to support the growth kinetics of disseminated tumors. Employing viable hypotheses, it is established that Gompertzian growth of disseminated cancer cells can be derived from a number of theoretical considerations. Empirical methods are used to validate and confirm the theoretical assertions with the use of available data.

Notizen: Abstract  Texture is a major component of consumer preference for eating-quality in apple. A quantitative genetic analysis of traits associated with fruit-flesh firmness was carried out. This was based on segregation in an unselected mapping population replicated at six sites and harvested over 2 years. Different methods of assessment were compared, and a principal components analysis carried out. Instrumental measures used were Magness-Taylor penetrometer readings, stiffness by acoustic resonance, and a range of sensory descriptors assessed by a trained panel. There were good correlations between some measures, although stiffness was poorly correlated. Whilst genotype by environment effects were large, significant effects were attributable to the genotype, and these were used to detect QTLs. Significant QTLs were detected on seven linkage groups, with large effects on linkage groups L01, L10 and L16. Whilst there was a poor correlation between acoustic stiffness and other measures, the significant and suggestive QTL detected for stiffness on linkage group L10 did represent a subset of significant QTLs detected for the penetrometer measure. The use of sensory assessment proved valuable in detecting QTLs representing different attributes of fruit texture. The possibility of interaction between significant QTLs for fruit texture and other strongly selected traits such as scab resistance and fruit acidity is addressed.

Notizen: Abstract A series of tests have been conducted on (i) auxetic, (ii) compression moulded and (iii) sintered ultra high molecular weight polyethylene. The auxetic material possesses a negative Poisson's ratio, ν, due to its complex porous microstructure which consists of nodules interconnected by fibrils and the sintered material has a positive ν and is microporous but does not contain fibrils. It was found that the auxetic material was both more difficult to indent than the other materials at low loads (from 10–100 N) and was the least plastic with the most rapid viscoelastic creep recovery of any residual deformation. Indeed, at low loads, where the resistance to local indentation is most elastic, the hardness increased by up to a factor of 8 on changing the Poisson's ratio from ν ≈ 0 to ν ≈ −0.8. A mechanism is proposed based on local densification under the indentor of the nodules and fibrils which explains how the microstructural response of an auxetic polymer can be used to interpret the results.
