Notizen: Amorphous CoFe2O4 with metal ions coordinated in a manner similar to the spinal crystal was prepared by the ion-beam sputter deposition method. The study of magnetic properties was carried out by dc- and ac-susceptibility measurements and Mössbauer spectroscopy. The strong spin-freezing behavior was observed in 80-Hz, 1-Oe ac susceptibility at two spin-freezing temperatures: 284 K (Tf1), which is considered to be caused by a random anisotropy of Co ions coordinated in distorted octahedral sites, and 86 K (Tf2), which might be caused by the frustration of antiferromagnetic interactions due to the amorphous structure. The dc susceptibility showed irreversibility below Tf1 which decreased with increasing applied field. However, a distinct change was not observed at Tf2. The Mössbauer spectrum revealed that some of the paramagnetic Fe ions were frozen below Tf1, with relaxation phenomena, and that the residual paramagnetic ions were frozen at Tf2. The time decay of the thermoremanent magnetization observed below Tf1 showed different behavior compared to that above and below Tf2.

Notizen: Co/Pt multilayer disks with a double-layer and a quadri-layer structure were prepared on a 2 P (photopolimerized) glass substrate with 1-μm-pitched grooves. The read/write characteristics of the disks were studied using Ar gas laser at a wavelength of 488 nm. It was confirmed that very small domains 0.3 μm in length were stably recorded. The carrier-to-noise ratio was 29 and 32 dB (30 kHz BW) at a mark length of 0.3 μm for double-layer and quadri-layer disks, respectively, being larger than that measured for a TbFeCo disk because of a higher figure of merit. In higher-density recording below 0.5-μm mark length, a quadri-layer disk shows a larger recording power margin than a double-layer disk due to the smaller expansion of domain with power, originating from the sharper thermal distribution.

Notizen: Magnetic properties and magnetoresistance were investigated for Ni80Fe20/Cu multilayers with different Ni80Fe20 and Cu thicknesses that were prepared on an MgO (110) substrate using ion beam sputtering with different Ar ion acceleration voltage (VB). The structure of Ni80Fe20 is epitaxial distorted face centered tetragonal with (110) orientation, as was determined by x-ray and electron diffraction measurements. Thus, the induced in-plane uniaxial magnetic anisotropy depends on the VB and the Ni80Fe20 layer thickness. A giant magnetoresistance at room temperature was obtained up to 20% for (15 A(ring) Ni80Fe20/10 A(ring) Cu)60 multilayers, and oscillated for Cu layer thickness with 12 A(ring) period. The saturation field Hs for the giant magnetoresistance (GMR) is in good agreement with 2J/dMs, where J, d, and Ms are layer exchange coupling, magnetic layer thickness, and saturation magnetization, respectively. The small field changes ΔH of 20 and 8 Oe needed for GMR were attained for n=16 (MR=12%) and 2 (MR=6.5%), respectively, in (70 A(ring) Ni80Fe20/10 A(ring) Cu)n with in-plane uniaxial anisotropy.

Notizen: Co/Pt and Co/Pd multilayers were prepared by two source dc-magnetron sputtering. It was found that magneto-optical and magnetic properties of the multilayers were affected by total film thickness. Kerr rotation angle of the films was remarkably enhanced at the film thickness below several hundred angstroms. The theoretical calculation clarified that the increase of Kerr rotation was due to optical interference and multiple reflection. The shape of Kerr loop also depends upon the film thickness and a perfect squareness is attained only at the ultrathin region. The improvement in the squareness of Kerr loop can be explained by the change in the domain structure from a stripe domain to a single domain. These behaviors at the ultrathin region in the multilayers are suitable for new magneto-optical recording media.

Notizen: Ultrathin Co/Pt multilayers deposited directly on polymer substrates displayed poorer Kerr hysteresis loops than multilayers deposited on glass substrates. However, sputter-etching the polymer substrates with oxygen gas produced a square Kerr hysteresis loop. Analysis of the liquid-solid contact angle at the substrate surface confirmed that the low surface free energy of the substrate gives rise to poor magneto-optical (MO) properties of the deposited Co/Pt film. The MO properties are improved by etching. This is the result of an increase in the surface free energy, which is probably related to a chemical reaction involving oxygen atoms and not due to a change in the surface morphology. Higher surface free energy or better wetting of the surface made possible by etching probably brings about better nucleation of the deposited atoms in the initial stage of film growth and improves the crystalline quality of film, resulting in an improvement in the MO properties.

Notizen: Magneto-optical media using ultrathin Co/Pt and Co/Pd films were prepared on 2P (photopolymer) glass substrates with a double-layer disk structure. Thermomagnetic writing was successfully made in the magneto-optical disks by the relatively low laser power above 3 mW. The values of the C/N ratio were 50 dB for the Co/Pt disk and 45 dB for the Co/Pd disk at a bit length of 5 μm. Clear and regular bit domains were observed even in the shorter recorded bit length.

Notizen: Nanometer-scale pits and mounds were fabricated on Au surface with a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) by applying voltage pulses between the PtIr tip and the substrate. Applying a positive pulse to the substrate generated a pit on the surface with high probability, while a negative pulse formed a mound. The mechanism of structure formation is inferred to be field evaporation, and the polarity dependence is related to the high threshold value of the PtIr alloy tip for negative field evaporation. Furthermore, the fabricated mound could be removed by applying a positive pulse, suggesting that the STM voltage pulse method may be applied to rewritable ultrahigh density recording. © 1994 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: In relation to theoretical predictions on the importance of randomness at the interface to determine the cause for giant magnetoresistance, argon acceleration voltage (VB) in ion beam sputtering was changed for preparing a set of CoxFe1−x/Cu multilayers. We found that the magnetoresistance as quite sensitive to the argon acceleration voltage and had a maximum around VB=600 V. Perfect antiferromagnetic coupling of the CoxFe1−x layers via thin Cu layers and the oscillation behavior of this indirect exchange coupling with a 12 A(ring) period were observed for VB=600 V. These results suggest the importance of the interface state for giant magnetoresistance in multilayers. We also found that a small saturation field can be induced, which can be explained by the metamagnetic transition associating the relation of Ku(approximately-greater-than)J/tCoFe.

Notizen: In order to determine which elements added to the Co layer in Co/Pt multilayers will reduce the Curie temperature with no significant decrease in the Kerr rotation angle, the magneto-optical (MO) properties of (Co1−XMX)/Pt (M: additional elements) multilayers were studied, taking into account the change in MO properties brought about by varying Pt layer thickness while maintaining Co layer thickness. The addition of any element simultaneously decreases Curie temperature Tc and Kerr rotation angle almost proportionately to the reduction in saturation magnetization Ms . The perpendicular magnetic anisotropy energy Ku also declines with the addition of another element, but for Ni, Fe, and Tb the change is small. The ratio Q of Ku to demagnetization energy, which represents the effective perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, degrades with X, due to the enlargement of Ms for Fe-added films, while Ni and Tb preserve a large Q. Although the Tb-added films distinctly change their interfacial structure above X=0.2, Ni and Fe hardly change the structure even if added in large amounts. As a result, the addition of Ni can control MO properties, keeping large effective perpendicular magnetic anisotropy without influencing the structure. (Co,Ni)/Pt films possess lower Tc than Co/Pt films with the same Ms , and the disks using (Co,Ni)/Pt films achieved higher write sensitivity and higher write/erase cyclability owing to the lower Tc than Co/Pt disks with the same carrier-to-noise ratio. It would seem, therefore, that (CoNi)/Pt multilayers are more promising for practical MO disks.

Notizen: To examine the role of cellular interactions involving class I histocompatibility antigens in the response to low concentrations of phytohaemagglutinin, we studied the effect of antibodies to components of these antigens on proliferative responses, interleukin-l and interleukin-2 production, and IL-2 receptor expression. Antibody to human β2-microglobulin (β2m) had an inhibitory elTect both on IL-2 accumulation at 48 h of culture and on the proliferative response 24 h later. Exogenous IL-2 completely reconstituted the inhibited proliferative responses, and also restored the modest decrease in IL-2 receptor expression that was induced by anli-βm. Pretreatment of either purified monocytes or T cells with anti-β2m had a simiiar inhibitory effect both on proliferation and on interleukin-2 production. By contrast. IL-1 production by LPS- or silica-stimulated monocytes was not affected by this antibody. Kinetic experiments demonstrated that anti-β2m was equally inhibitory when added at the initiation of culture or after 24 h. and significant inhibition occurred when the antibody was added as late as 48 h. Our results are consistent with an ongoing role for class I antigens in the cellular interactions between lymphocytes and accessory cells required for the production of IL-2.
