Notizen: We study the chaotic domain state in rotating convection using a model equation that allows for a continuous range of roll orientations as in the experimental system. Methods are developed for extracting the domain configuration from the resulting patterns that should be applicable to a wide range of domain states. Comparison with the truncated three mode amplitude equation description is made. © 1994 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: A particularly simple model belonging to a wide class of coupled maps which obey a local conservation law is studied. The phase structure of the system and the types of the phase transitions are determined. It is argued that the structure of the phase diagram is robust with respect to mild violations of the conservation law. Critical exponents possibly determining a new universality class are calculated for a set of independent order parameters. Numerical evidence is produced suggesting that the singularity in the density of Lyapunov exponents at λ=0 is a reflection of the singularity in the density of Fourier modes (a "Van Hove" singularity) and disappears if the conservation law is broken. Applicability of the Lyapunov dimension to the description of spatiotemporal chaos in a system with a conservation law is discussed. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Coupled maps with conserved quantities are introduced as models for chaos in extended systems. The long-wavelength limit of a simple one-dimensional example is investigated in detail. A Langevin equation for this system is derived, and the applicability of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem is discussed. Several numerical experiments to investigate possible thermodynamic properties are described.

Notizen: Summary This study compared the induction time, haemodynamic changes, recovery characteristics and patient satisfaction for sevoflurane and propofol when used as the main anaesthetic agents for cardioversion. Sixty-one unpremedicated patients scheduled for elective cardioversion were anaesthetised with either inhaled sevoflurane 8% or an intravenous propofol target-controlled infusion set at 6 µg.ml−1. There was no significant difference in induction time between the two groups: mean (SD) = 90.1(40) s in the sevoflurane group vs. 83.7(35) s in the propofol group. Mean (SD) time to recovery was significantly shorter in the sevoflurane group than in the propofol group: 318 (127) s vs. 738 (355) s, respectively, p 〈 0.001. At recovery, the patients in the propofol group had significantly lower systolic and diastolic blood pressures than those in the sevoflurane group, p 〈 0.001. The incidence of complications was low in both groups, with similar patient satisfaction expressed after the procedure. We conclude that sevoflurane is a suitable choice for anaesthesia for cardioversion and may provide greater haemodynamic stability than a target-controlled infusion of propofol.

Notizen: The gene encoding the c. 105 kD secreted haemolysin protein of the porcine pathogen Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae serotype 1 has been isolated by screening a lambda gt11 expression library in Escherichia coli with antiserum raised against the wild-type protein. A derivative recombinant DNA pJFF702 expressed the hlylA haemolysin gene from the pUC19 lac promoter but the resulting haemolysin I protein remained within the E. coli cell and was haemolytically inactive. Export of the intracellular A. pleuropneumoniae prohaemolysin out into the medium was achieved by the presence in trans of the E. coli haemolysin secretion genes hlyB and hlyD, and high levels of intracellular haemotytic activity were attained similarly by the E. coli post-translational haemolysin activator gene, hlyC. Southern hybridization of A. pleuropneumoniae parental DNA nevertheless indicated only a low degree of nucleotide sequence identity to the haemolysin structural and secretion genes hlyA and hlyB of E. coli. The data show that despite substantial nucleotide sequence divergence the A. pleuropneumoniae serotype 1 haemolysin determinant is closely related to that which is dispersed throughout other Gram-negative human and animal pathogens.

Notizen: Export of haemolysin protein (HlyA) directed by the Escherichia coli pHly152 hly determinant is dependent upon transcriptional activation, primarily strong intra-operon transcript antitermination imposed between the haemolysin structural genes hlyC and hlyA and the contiguous downstream export genes hlyB and hlyD. Transcript elongation was dictated by a DNA sequence several kb upstream of the rho-independent terminator but could not be assigned to a discrete locus; on the contrary, it was progressive, increasing with the addition of up to 3.5kbp of operon-proximal sequence containing the insertion elements IS2 and IS91. Antitermination was prominent throughout logarithmic growth but absent in stationary phase, and was effective only in cis but not in trans. Primer extension indicated that transcription activation utilized the native transcriptional start sites of the unactivated hly operon.

Notizen: This paper details and demonstrates integrated optimisation-reliability modelling for predicting the performance of solder joints in electronic packaging. This integrated modelling approach is used to identify efficiently and quickly the most suitable design parameters for solder joint performance during thermal cycling and is demonstrated on flip-chip components using "no-flow" underfills. To implement "optimisation in reliability" approach, the finite element simulation tool - PHYSICA, is coupled with optimisation and statistical tools. This resulting framework is capable of performing design optimisation procedures in an entirely automated and systematic manner.

New Zealand genetically hypertensive (GH) rats were treated with enalapril from the age of 4 to 10 weeks and the effects of treatment on the structure of mesenteric resistance arteries (MR A) was measured by use of stereological analysis of stained sections and by myograph techniques.2. Tail-cuff blood pressure (BP) was measured weekly and intra-arterial BP recorded just before MRA were either fixed by perfusion or mounted on a myograph.3. Stereological techniques (Cavalieri and optical dissector) were used to determine media and lumen volume, fraction of smooth muscle (SM) within the media and SM cell density. For MRA mounted on the myograph, lumen diameter, media thickness, active tension and active pressure were recorded.4. BP was significantly (P〈0.0001) lowered by enalapril throughout the experiment. Intra-arterial BP and left ventricular (LV) mass were also significantly lower in the enalapril treated GH rats (P〈0.0001).5. Stereological measurements showed that enalapril treatment significantly (P〈0.0001 reduced media volume by 50%, doubled lumen volume (P〈0.0001)), reduced the fraction of SM in the media (P〈0.04), and had no effect on the number of SM cell layers or on SM cell density.6. Myograph measurements showed a decrease in the ratio media thickness/lumen diameter which was accompanied by a decrease in maximum active tension and pressure development.7. In the GH rat early treatment with enalapril causes a true loss of medial tissue that is not simply due to rearrangement of existing media around an enlarged lumen.8. The reduction in media without changes in SM cell density or in the number of layers of SM cells supports the suggestion that angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACEI) have an effect on cell matrix.

Four groups of New Zealand genetically hypertensive (GH) rats were treated with felodipine as follows: (A) from ages 4–12 weeks; (B) 4–20 weeks; (C) 4–12 weeks then withdrawn from felodipine till age 20 weeks; and (D) 12–20 weeks.2. Effects on blood pressure (BP), left ventricular (LV) weight and the structure of myograph-mounted mesenteric resistance arteries (MRA) were measured.3. BP was about 170 mmHg in 4 week old GH rats and did not change substantially from this value in groups A and B but rose to over 230 mmHg in untreated controls. In rats of group D, started on felodipine at 12 weeks, BP fell rapidly and was 173 mmHg at 20 weeks. On withdrawal of felodipine at 12 weeks (group C) BP rose rapidly and exceeded control levels at 20 weeks.4. LV mass was significantly lower (P 〈 0.001) in all groups (A, B and D) killed while on felodipine but rose to control levels in the rats taken off felodipine.5. In the four treated groups there were no significant changes in MRA structure (lumen diameter, medial thickness, media/lumen ratio and volume of medial tissue) as measured on the myograph.6. Felodipine induces substantial falls in BP in GH rats which are sufficient to prevent cardiac hypertrophy but do not alter MRA structure. Resistance artery structure in GH rats does not seem to relate to the level of hypertension, and may therefore not have a necessary role in the pathogenesis of this hypertensive strain.
