Notes: Yttria-doped zirconia nanopowders have been obtained using the hydrothermal procedure starting from soluble inorganic salts. The mechanisms and kinetics of the process have been studied to obtain high purity powders with a crystalline size range of 4 to 22nm and specific surface near 200 m2/g. These powders have been have been used to obtain membranes with controlled thickness and with densities over 95% of the theoretical value by employing the tape casting technique usingorganic binders, dispersants and surfactants. The influence of the additives and sintering regime on the density and microstructure of membranes has been studied. The ionic conductivity of the materials was investigated and modelled. Different types of ruthenate pastes were used to obtain thick resistive films on the zirconia membranes and interactions between the substrate and membranes were studied. Finally the gauge characteristics of the device and possibilities for applications as mechanical pressure sensors with high sensitivity are discussed

Notes: Abstract Amorphous precursors for PbZrO3 and PbTiO3 ceramics were prepared from lead acetate and the transition metaln-propoxide inn-propanol orn-butoxide inn-butanol and hydrolysed with an excess of water. According to GLC and TGA/EGA analyses, the type of alkoxide group influences distinctly the structure of heterometallic precursors, i.e., oxo or acetate bridging, and the amounts of hydroxyl and organic groups bound to the metal network. The local environments of metal atoms in the amorphous precursors were also studied by EXAFS. The analysis reveals that in Pb−Zr precursors alkoxide groups modify the coordination spheres of the zirconium atoms. Conversely, local environments of both lead and titanium atoms within the analysed range of 3.4 A depend weakly on the type of alkoxide used.

Notes: Abstract Pb(Zr0.50Ti0.50)O3 solid solution was prepared using lead acetate and transition metal n-propoxides in n-propanol or n-butoxides in n-butanol. The complex solutions were hydrolysed with an excess of H2O. The resultant powders were calcined up to 700°C for 30 minutes in a flowing oxygen atmosphere. Scanning electron microscope analysis showed different morphologies of the resultant powders. The n-propoxide derived powder consisted of gel fragments, while the n-butoxide derived one had agglomerated submicrometre particles. EDS analysis of the powders revealed no chemical heterogeneities in the examined samples upon calcining up to 600°C, notwithstanding the type of precursor used. Both samples, calcined at 700°C, exhibited a slight deficiency of lead in the pyrochlore type phase as compared to the perovskite phase.

Notes: Abstract: We present the results of a dc transport and optical investigation of WO3 and NaxWO3 with x =0.01. Upon Na-doping we find a (Drude) metallic component in the optical conductivity, while the transport data display a crossover from an activated to a variable range hopping regime around 210 K. We suggest the possible formation of polarons (and bipolarons) and speculate that superconductivity could be induced, provided the dc percolation threshold is achieved.

Notes: Abstract The dilatation-temperature curves of the PZT-ZrO2 composites, containing 1.3–13.2 vol% ZrO2 were studied. The course of martensitic transformation (MT) of dispersed ZrO2 particles in the PZT matrix was followed. Upon cooling, a spontaneous microcrack formation occurred during the MT from tetragonal to monoclinic crystal phase of ZrO2. The phenomenon of intensive shrinkage above 800 °C upon heating is explained as a process of microcrack healing in the presence of the PbO-rich liquid phase.
