    Notes: Pr(Fe0.6Co0.4)2 ribbons were prepared by melt spinning with different wheel speeds from 35 to 45 m/s. Their structure, magnetic properties, and thermal stability are investigated. At a wheel speed of 35 m/s, the ribbon consists of a mixture of Pr(Fe,Co)2 cubic Laves phase and some noncubic phases. An almost Pr(Fe,Co)2 nanocrystalline single phase with a Curie temperature of 305 °C is obtained at a wheel speed of 40 m/s. Except for Pr(FeCo)2 phase a small amount of amorphous phase is observed with increasing wheel speeds to 45 m/s. Pr(Fe,Co)2 phase becomes unstable and decomposes above 770 °C. The resin-bonded Pr(Fe,Co)2 nanocrystalline phase which is obtained at a wheel speed of 40 m/s combines high magnetostriction (λ(parallel)−λ⊥=140 ppm), with significant coercivity, iHc=5 kOe. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A series of polycrystalline bulk (La1−xSmx)2/3Sr1/3MnO3 samples over a wide composition range (x=0,0.1,0.33,...,1) was prepared by solid-phase reaction sintering technique. The x-ray diffraction pattern indicates that all the samples have an orthorhombically distorted perovskite structure. A large linear magnetostriction with a value up to −180×10−6 was observed at the temperature of 77 K under the maximum magnetic field of 1.5 T. The linear magnetostriction and magnetoresistance effect of our samples has similar dependence on the Sm content x. At room temperature, the sample with a Curie temperature of 320 K, and a Sm content of x=0.33, shows both maximum linear magnetostriction value of −40×10−6 and a maximum magnetoresistance value of −12%. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The density profiles were measured in the Hefei tokamak-7 (HT-7) [World Survey of Activities in Controlled Fusion Research, Nuclear Fusion Special Supplement (International Atomic Energy Agency, Vienna, 1997), p. 61] ohmic discharges by means of a new multichannel far-infrared (FIR) laser interferometer. The progress on the extension of the HT-7 ohmic discharge operation region was introduced. The experiment results at the density limit, the multifaceted asymmetric radiation from the edge (MARFE) phenomena, the rf (radio frequency) boronization experiments, and the fueling efficiency studies were reported. The plasma physics in the molecular beam injection (MBI), the pellet injection (PI), and the gas puffing (GP) fueling experiments was studied and discussed. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A series of Fe/Al2O3/Fe tunneling junction samples were prepared by ion beam sputtering technique. After deposited, the Al layers in a series of samples were exposed to the air for 24–100 h to obtain Al2O3 layers (100 Å) with different oxidation quality. A tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) value of 5.89% was observed in the sample with the Al layer oxidized for 72 h. The I–V curve of this sample shows a nonlinear relationship, indicating the existence of well metal–insulator contact in the sample. The microstructures of these samples were analyzed by using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The results show that good Al2O3 layers are formed in all samples, but there exists an interdiffusion interface between the Fe and Al2O3 (with Al metal inclusions) layer which greatly influences the TMR effect. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A fast-scanning heterodyne radiometer employing a backward-wave oscillator (BWO) in 78–118 GHz was developed and installed for electron cyclotron emission (ECE) measurements in HT-7 superconducting tokamak. The radiometer measures 16 ECE frequency points with a scanning time period of 0.65 ms, each of the frequency points can be preset by the program to meet specific interests in physics. The high scanning speed is achieved by carefully choosing a BWO, very finely adjusting the radiometer over the full waveband, and by eliminating some elements that are routinely included in a fast-scanning radiometer system. A horizontal view of the ECE optics was installed to measure electron temperature profiles. The spatial resolution is about 1 cm (Bt=2 T) in the center of the HT-7 minor cross section, determined by the intermediate frequency of 0.1–0.5 GHz in the radiometer. Vertically viewing optics along a perpendicular chord was also installed to study nonthermal ECE spectra. Preliminary measurement results in pellet injection plasma and lower-hybrid current drive plasma were presented. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The microstructure and Giant Magnetoresistance (GMR) in Co–Cu and Co–Ni–Cu alloy granular films prepared by dc magnetron sputtering technique was discussed. The microstructure of Co–Ni–Cu alloy granular films observed by XRD, SEM, and HRTEM examinations showed even microscopic tissue in which nanoparticles of Co–Ni were well-distributed, much different than that of Co–Cu alloy granular films in which full-grown microparticles of Co were embedded in Cu matrix. By Magnetic Hysteresis Measurement and Neel's superparamagnetism theory, the mean size of the Co–Ni particles in Co–Ni–Cu alloy granular films was estimated to be 2 to 4 nm, much smaller than that in Co–Cu alloy granular films. These results indicated that owing to the existence of Ni in Co–Ni–Cu alloy granular films the phase segregation was not a nucleation and growth process as that of Co–Cu alloy granular films but due to spinodal decomposition which was reported for the first time in granular films. It was also found that when samples dropped from room temperature to low temperature, the GMR boomed in Co–Ni–Cu alloy granular films, on the contrary to the behavior of Co–Cu alloy granular films. This fact meant that the Co–Ni–Cu alloy granular films with proper Ni content might have no response to the temperature change. Furthermore, the GMR as a function of magnetic density in Co–Ni–Cu alloy granular films is of much better linearity than that in Co–Cu alloy granular films. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Amorphous oxide films with a composition of Bi2DyFe5O12 have been prepared by rf sputtering technique. The crystallization process was investigated using x-ray diffraction, differential thermal analysis, magnetic properties, magnetic resonance spectra, magneto-optical Faraday spectra, Raman spectra, and infrared reflection spectra. Amorphous oxide films exhibit very small magnetization and Faraday rotation at room temperature. At about 600 °C amorphous films crystallize to a garnet phase. With crystallization the magnetization and Faraday rotation increase rapidly. Raman and infrared spectra studies show the presence of tetrahedral sites in the amorphous films. As the annealing temperature increases, the peaks corresponding to octahedral and dodecahedral sites occur successively. It is of interest to note that amorphous oxide films containing Fe3+ ions show no magnetic resonance spectra at 71 and 300 K. The films annealed above crystallization temperature show a normal resonance spectrum. With increasing annealing temperature the linewidth decreases rapidly and the effective magnetization and anisotropy constant increase. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) spectra and coercivities of FeSi-SiO2 granular films have been measured over a wide range of FeSi volume fractions (fv). The films were prepared using the ion-beam sputtering technique and transmission electron microscopy showed that the FeSi alloy granules are embedded in a matrix of SiO2. An enhanced coercivity (Hc), as high as 329 Oe at room temperature, is observed. For some samples, there are several resonance peaks in the FMR spectra, which include one major peak and several minor peaks. The major and minor peaks correspond to the usual uniform mode and spin-wave respectively. In our experiments, the field separations between the major and the minor peaks show a complex fashion. Our results are discussed in comparison with some theoretical models.

    Notes: The effects of Mo additions on the structure and magnetic properties of Sm2Fe(15.5−x)MoxAl1.5C1.5 alloys have been investigated by means of x-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and magnetic measurements. The XRD analyses show that as-cast alloys consist mainly of a 2/17-type carbide and a considerable amount of α-Fe. Rapidly quenched, the Mo-containing alloys form a nanocrystalline structure with an average grain size of 35–50 nm, while the amount of the α-Fe phase is greatly decreased. The magnetic hardening of the Mo-containing alloys can be achieved by direct quenching. A coercivity exceeding 1.35 T is obtained for the Sm2Fe14.9Mo0.6Al1.5C1.5 ribbon spun at 40 m/s. These results reveal that the addition of Mo is effective in improving the coercivity. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.
