    Notizen: Gentamicin sulphate employed in therapeutics consists of a mixture of three major aminoglycoside components, the gentamicins C1, C1a and C2. In the electron impact mass spectra of these components weak parent ions may be observed but they are of no diagnostic value in the commercial mixture. Chemical ionization and field desorption spectra of individual gentamicin components and commercial mixtures are reported and discussed. Isobutane chemical ionization spectra exhibit some fragmentation, but under optimum field desorption conditions little glycosidic cleavage is observed and [M + H]+ ions dominate the spectra.

    Notizen: The mass spectra of a variety of authentic carotenoids covering a range of structural types have been studied using the field desorption technique. All the compounds examined show the molecular ion as the base peak, even where this ion is of very low intensity in the electron-impact spectra. Little fragmentation is observed, but thermal decomposition can be induced in certain cases by using higher emitter currents. Application to a simple mixture of authentic compounds and a more complex mixture of sedimentary origin shows the potential of the method in the rapid qualitative screening of carotenoids in crude extracts.

    Notizen: The electron impact mass spectra of a series of natural anthraquinone, anthrone, dianthrone aglycones and their ‘O’ and ‘C’ linked glycosides have been studied. Electron impact mass spectrometry failed to provide molecular weight information for the dianthrone aglycones and for the ‘O’ linked glycosides. Ammonia chemical ionization and field desorption mass spectra were studied as techniques to overcome this deficiency. A combination of electron impact and field desorption mass spectrometry proved to be most effective for structural studies of the dianthrone aglycones and the ‘O’ linked glycosides.
