Notes:
The relationship of spontaneous variation in heart rate during the pre-stimulus period to average evoked heart rate response to repetitive auditory stimuli was investigated in the neonate. Spontaneous variation was measured as the slope from horizontal from the peak or trough, preceding the stimulus on the cardio-tachometer record to the time of stimulus presentation. The data suggest that the stimulus-evoked heart rate response varies significantly as a function of the spontaneous variation in the pre-stimulus heart rate slope, independent, in part, of the pre-stimulus heart rate level.
