    Notes: The description of a new experimental design for microluminescence is presented in this article. The design is based on the optical analysis of a magnified luminescent region and has been proven to be useful for studying the photon transport mechanism in a solid luminescent material. Lock-in detection and a liquid-nitrogen-cooled detector are used to obtain signal-to-noise ratio as good as 102. The performance of the system is discussed by using the measurements taken from a natural ruby crystal. Using transport theory to fit our data, we found the photon diffusion length in the ruby crystal to be on the order of 46 μm. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract: GH3 cells present spontaneous Ca2+ action potentials and oscillations of intracellular Ca2+, which can be modified by altering the activity of K+ or Ca2+ channels. We took advantage of this spontaneous activity to screen for effects of a purified toxin (Tx3-1) from the venom of Phoneutria nigriventer on ion channels. We report that Tx3-1 increases the frequency of Ca2+ oscillations, as do two blockers of potassium channels, 4-aminopyridine and charybdotoxin. Whole-cell patch clamp experiments show that Tx3-1 reversibly inhibits the A-type K+ current (IA) but does not block other K+ currents (delayed-rectifying, inward-rectifying, and large-conductance Ca2+-sensitive) or Ca2+ channels (T and L type) in these cells. In addition, we describe the sequence of a full cDNA clone of Tx3-1, which shows that Tx3-1 has no homology to other known blockers of K+ channels and gives insights into the processing of this neurotoxin. We conclude that Tx3-1 is a selective inhibitor of IA, which can be used to probe the role of this channel in the control of cellular function. Based on the effect of Tx3-1, we suggest that IA is an important determinant of the frequency of Ca2+ oscillations in unstimulated GH3 cells.

    Notes: An analytical method to calculate invariants is developed, based on the theory of complete systems of simultaneous linear first order partial differential equations. The application of this algorithm to the general case, in which the invariants are not polynomials is included. For the case of Lie algebras with one invariant the procedure of finding the invariant can be computerized. As an example of this procedure, the algorithm is applied in the calculation of the invariants of the group SA(n,R). The explicit construction of its invariants for n=2, 3, 4 is given. A theorem determining the order of a polynomial invariant of a Lie group is proven allowing us to show that the invariant of SA(n,R) is a homogeneous polynomial of order 1/2n(n+1) in the generators. From this fact an immediate consequence is that the order in the generators of translations is n. The method is also applied in the calculation of invariants of the dimension six solvable Lie algebras, and dimension seven nilpotent.

    Notes: In this paper, the application of Bayesian networks to student modeling is discussed. A review of related work is made, and then the structural model is defined. Two of the most commonly cited reasons for not using Bayesian networks in student modeling are the computational complexity of the algorithms and the difficulty of the knowledge acquisition process. We propose an approach to simplify knowledge acquisition. Our approach applies causal independence to factor the conditional probabilities and decrease the parameters required for each question to a number linear in the number of concepts. This also provides the new parameters with an intuitive meaning that makes their specification easier. Finally, we present an example to illustrate the use of our approach.

    Notes: The microluminescence surface scan technique has been used to investigate ambipolar carrier diffusion, photon diffusion, and photocarrier recombination in a nominally undoped InGaAs bulk layer lattice matched to InP grown by vapor levitation epitaxy. Measurements taken at different temperatures between 75 and 300 K are discussed in terms of the relative contribution of the two distinct mechanisms to the spectrally integrated luminescence intensity, namely, photon diffusion and photocarrier diffusion. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The formation of trans-thylakoid proton motive force (pmf) is coupled to light-driven electron transfer and both powers the synthesis of ATP and acts as a signal for initiating antenna regulation. This key intermediate has been difficult to study because of its ephemeral and variable qualities. This review covers recent efforts to probe pmf in vivo as well as efforts to address one of the key questions in photosynthesis: How does the photosynthetic machinery achieve sufficient flexibility to meet the energetic and regulatory needs of the plant in a varying environment? It is concluded that pmf plays a central role in these flexibility mechanisms.

    Notes: Abstract— The Ductile Fracture Method (DFM) proposed by Ernst and Landes and further developed by Landes and coworkers is examined in conjunction with the Common Format Equation (CFE) proposed by Donoso and Landes. The DFM can be used to predict the load versus displacement behavior for a structure from the load versus displacement record for a fracture toughness test specimen. This involves a calibration function transformation procedure which is often laborious. But, it will be shown here that using the CFE approach with an adequate normalizing parameter for the deformation function, H, the transformation procedure can be virtually eliminated. As a consequence, the predictions done by the DFM can be completed in a shorter time. The equations which originated the CFE approach are reviewed to show that the modification proposed in this paper is necessary for H to get closer to a unique representation, independent of the geometry. Some examples are presented to demonstrate the applicability of the approach.
