Notes: Packed upflow bubble columns. Packed upflow bubble columns are used in the chemical industry, in biotechnology, and in waste-water purification. They are usually operated in the co-current mode and have various advantages, but also disadvantages, compared with empty bubble columns. This survey reports the current state-of-the-art in fluid dynamics (flow states, pressure drop, holdup and dispersion, bubble size and bubble rise velocity, interfacial area), mass and heat transfer (mass transfer coefficients at the gas/liquid and liquid/solids interface, heat transfer coefficients for fluid/solids and fluid/wall interfaces, effective thermal conductivity of the bulk solids through which flow occurs), flow models (continuum models, stage models, zone models), and other aspects of this type of multiphase reactor; gaps in our knowledge are also indicated.

Notes: A cubic equation of state is modified in such a way that prediction of PVT data from 40 model compounds, typical of coal oil, becomes possible with an absolute mean deviation of less than 2% for saturated liquid volumes and vapour pressures 〉 1 bar. Additional correlations for binary interaction parameters are obtained by an optimization procedure using vapour-liquid euilibrium (VLE) data from known heavy hydrocarbon liquid/light gas systems. When the modified equation is applied to coal-derived liquids, only specific gravity and boiling analysis data of the coal liquids are required, primarily in order to determine the equation-of-state parameters. The proposed equation is shown to allow a good prediction of VLE data for systems consisting of wide-boiling-range coal oils and light gases. Experimental values were obtained at elevated temperatures and pressures with a circulation flow apparatus.

Notes: A heterogeneous fluid dynamic model has been developed to describe the complex flow structure of two-phase in bubble columns. The equation of continuity and momentum balances form the basis of the model. Coupling of the two phases occurs via an interaction force, deduced by a force balance around a single rising bubble. Multiphase flow mixing processes are taken into consideration by introducing turbulent viscosities of the two phases involved. The Simulation program was extended to reactive system, taking into account the mass balances of a second order gas-liquid chemical reaction as well as the different absorption/reaction regimes. The gas phase concentration profiles show pronounced axial and radial dependences, while the liquid phase can be regarded as a CSTR with respect to the liquid component. With reference to the gaseous component, which is being absorbed in the liquid phase, the degree of back mixing does not show CSTR behaviour as the influence of different absorption conditions in different axial and radial reactor positions is superposed on that of turbulent motion of the liquid carrier of the dissolved gaseous component.

Notes: Deactivation kinetics and coke removal kinetics were derived from experimental studies on the disproportionation of ethylbenzene with a protonated Y-faujasite (Z-14) in a loop reactor under supercritical conditions. Derivation of the steady state kinetics of ethylbenzene disproportionation permitted determination of the catalyst activity. At small educt mole fractions of ethylbenzene, owing to the modest removal of coke the deactivation kinetics can be described by a power relationship. The rate of coke removal can be correlated with the activity and the deactivation rate of the catalyst.

Notes: Hydrogenation of 10% aqueous solution of 3-hydroxypropanal (HPA) was adiabatically carried out over cylindrical Ni/SiO2/Al2O3-catalyst pellets (∅ 0.8 + 5 mm) in a trickle bed (∅ 76 × 5200 mm) at 2.6 to 8.0 MPa. The concentration and temperature profiles in the trickle-bed were measured at different flow rates of liquid. A mathematical model was developed under consideration of heat transfer, interphase mass transfer, intraparticle diffusion and deactivation of catalyst pellets at partial wetting with different wetting geometries. The model fits the measured data satisfactorily when its kinetics of deactivation is modified by a factor determined by regression of data measured in the trickle bed.

Notes: Large quantities of sludge containing considerable amounts of zinc are obtained on treatment of waste water from the production of viscose fibres for textiles and industrial applications. A process has been proposed [7, 10] for the recovery of zinc from one such sludge, in the first step of which zinc is transferred to the liquid phase with liberation of hydrogen sulphide. In connection with this work a model was developed which provides a kinetic description of zinc liberation from various sludges and the parameters of this model fitted to the measured data by means of linear regression.

Notes: In the study of the possible coke removal from zeolite catalysts, the solubility of polyaromates in supercritical fluids (SCF) was determined, showing that it becomes drastically reduced with increasing molar mass. Experiments with supercritical ethyl benzene and benzene showed that only coke precursors can be dissolved and, therefore, complete coke removal by SCF is impossible but it has been confirmed that, under supercritical conditions, deactivation of the catalyst could be slowed down.
