Notes: Abstract Double differential cross sections for the inclusive production of neutrons from64Zn,65Cu and89Y bombarded with 26.0 MeV protons have been measured with time-of-flight techniques. The data reduction is discussed with respect to the influence of background corrections in the continuous part of the spectra, and a short comparison with preequilibrium model calculations is presented, showing good agreement with predictions of both, the hybrid and the geometry-dependent hybrid model including multiple particle emission. The question of how to treat pairing remains open.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract According to a literature search, it seems most unlikely based on pathophysiological requirements and physiological aspects that traumatized children benefit from preoperative waiting times aimed at achieving a 6-h fast. Irrespective of fasting, traumatized children are at risk of requiring aspiration. Many generally recommended measures for the avoidance of aspiration are neither reasonable nor effective in traumatized children. The physical and psychological benefits that can be derived from shorter preoperative waiting times can more than override the organizational difficulties caused by waiting longer.

Notes: Abstract The vir regulon of group A streptococci (GAS) organizes the expression of several bacterial virulence factors under the control of the Mga regulator. Previously, the genes encoding the Mga regulator (mga), M and M-related proteins (emm, mrp, enn) and C5a peptidase (scpA) were reported to be clustered on the streptococcal genome in a core vir regulon. In the present study, the genomic regions of a serotype M49 strain upstream of mga and downstream of scpA were sequenced to assess the boundaries of the vir regulon. In the upstream region, an operon was identified that may be potentially involved in substrate transport and is independent from Mga regulation. In the downstream region, another Mga-controlled, scpA-cotranscribed gene was detected. This gene termed orfX encoded a 385-amino acid (aa) potential surface protein of unknown function. No binding of serum proteins to a recombinant ORFX was detectable and phagocytosis resistance of an orfX mutant remained unchanged. Downstream of orfX, another Mga-independent gene determined the 3′ end of the core vir regulon. Utilizing the M49 wild type, a mga – mutant and comparative Northern blot hybridization, genes encoding the capsule synthesis machinery, streptokinase and streptolysin O, as well as erythrogenic toxin A and DNase C were found to be Mga independent. In contrast, expression of the genes encoding the cysteine protease SpeB, streptococcin A and the oligopeptide permease was reduced in the mga – mutant. This indicated that in addition to the core vir regulon, Mga directly or indirectly controls a number of genes dispersed throughout the GAS genome.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Es wird ein Analysenverfahren vorgestellt, das die Abtrennung und Bestimmung von Dimethylarsonsäure (DMAS) und As(III) aus Festproben erlaubt.
Notes: Summary An analytical method is described for the separation and determination of dimethylarsonic acid (DMAA) and As(III) in solid samples. DMAA is volatilized from the solid material and detected with a microwave induced plasma and optical emission spectroscopy. As(III) is extracted from the solid material and detected by atomic absorption spectroscopy. After decomposition under pressure, the total arsenic content is also detected by atomic absorption spectroscopy. These analytical methods are used for the investigation of soil and airborne aerosol samples. It has been found that the contents of the different arsenic species, analyzed in different soil samples depends strongly on the depth of the soil whereas in airborne aerosol samples, the contents of the different As-species is strongly dependent on the sampling site and on the meteorological conditions. The total arsenic concentrations varied from 1 to 22 μg As/g soil in soil samples and from 12 to 61.4 μg As/g aerosol in airborne aerosol samples. The maximum concentration of DMAA found in soil samples was 11.2 ng DMAA/g soil. The concentrations of As (III) varied from 0.3 to 10.5 μg As(III)/g soil in soil samples and from 3 to 30.3 μg As(III)/g aerosol in airborne aerosol samples.

Notes: Abstract Using data from the Global Oscillation Network Group (GONG) covering the period from 1995 to 1998, we study the change with solar activity in solar f-mode frequencies. The results are compared with similar changes detected from the Michelson Doppler Imager (MDI) data. We find variations in f-mode frequencies which are correlated with solar activity indices. If these changes are due to variation in solar radius then the implications are that the solar radius decreases by about 5 km from minimum to maximum activity.
