Notes: The design of a miniaturized photoreactor is presented that allows for continuous as well as for stopped flow photochemical experiments on solid photocatalysts with gaseous educts. Volatile products can be analyzed by any gas phase detection scheme such as mass spectrometry or gas chromatography. In addition, the design allows for easy in situ optical spectroscopic measurements such as UV/VIS, IR, and luminescence, depending on the transparency of the window material used. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: . Miamiensis avidus, a marine scuticociliate, undergoes microstome to macrostome transformation. This process is induced by prey ciliates. the morphogenesis of this process was examined using scanning electron microscopy and light microscopy of quantitative protargol-stained specimens. Several stages are identified and described.

Notes: . Metanophrys diminuta n. sp., a marine philasterine scuticociliate collected from the south Florida coast, was preserved for transmission electron microscopy using a mixed fixation technique. Rough endoplasmic reticulum profiles were found proximal to mitochondria and within mitochondrial fenestrations (or deep pockets). In longitudinal sections mitochondrial profiles appear to be very long, occupying almost the entire length of the cell. The micronucleus is roughly spherical to ovoid, semi-enclosed in the macronucleus. The oral polykinetid #1 is composed of two files of kinetosomes. The c segment of the oral dikinetid is composed of three to four kinetosomes. This species is the smallest within the genus Metanophrys.

Notes: Miamiensis avidus is a marine polymorphic scuticociliate that undergoes microstome to tomite transformation when nutrients are depleted. This transformation takes place as a result of two consecutive divisions and does not involve a cyst. Tomitogenesis was induced by nutrient deprivation. When returned to nutrient medium tomites transformed into microstomes. Changes in population were noted at one-hour intervals. Tomites of Miamiensis avidus Ma/2 are compared to dispersal stages in other scuticociliates and hymenostomes.

Notes: . Miamiensis avidus Ma/2 is a marine polymorphic scuticociliate. Eight strains of philasterine scuticociliates, currently in culture at the American Type Culture Collection (ATCC), were shown to produce a soluble factor that induces macrostomy in Ma/ 2: Miamlensis avidus (Ma and Ma/2), Paranophrys sp. (1–1), Parauronema acutum (110–3). Anophtyoides soldoi (116–1), Anophryoides sp. (33–8). Merunophrys sp. (113–8), and Paranophrys sp. (34–7). Of the strains tested, Paranophrys strain 1–1 showed the highest induction of transformation, although all eight strains showed statistically significant induction.

Notes: The paper responds to Cohen's critical claim that for agents who sincerely accept Rawls's difference principle it is not consistent to seek material incentives towards productivity. The central argument of the paper is that productive agents in a market economy would not be as productive without material incentives unless held to be under a (controversial) duty to increase productivity. This duty is distinct from merely having a duty to contribute up to a reasonable minimum, and then equalise material benefits. The controversial duty is not derivable from the difference principle itself, nor from the background motivations for it. Therefore, if Cohen's critique is internal to Rawlsian distributive justice, it is based on a controversial version of that view of distributive justice when applied to a market system. It is the reach, and not the core insight of Cohen's critique that is attacked here. If in any way sound, that insight does not un-controversially apply to all material incentive-seeking in a market economy.

Notes: Introduces the concept of a manufacturing strategy based on a serviceorientation. Traditional manufacturing strategies have often beendriven by cost minimization decisions and have encouraged theover-reliance by managers on inventories to satisfy demand. In today'sbusiness environment, a reliance on inventory is often not feasible.Suggests a reliance on capacity available to meet demand, as used by theservice industry. Such a strategy is in direct conflict with mostcost-accounting systems because of the absorption of overhead costsbased on direct labour. Proposes two alternatives for changing theaccounting system, to enhance the move towards the service-basedstrategy. Lastly, presents a case study of a US plant to illustrate theresults that a company adopting this approach should expect.

Notes: A well developed manufacturing strategy is becoming increasinglyimportant to many manufacturing organizations. A major feature of such astrategy is the definition of a manufacturing infrastructure that isconsistent with how products and services compete in the selectedmarket. The managerial accounting system is a key component of thisinfrastructure. Reports the results of a survey of 85 manufacturingcompanies. Finds that many companies use an accounting system thatappears to be inappropriate. The systems are often ill suited to theirmarketplace and inconsistent with an appropriate manufacturing strategy.Discusses recommendations for change for companies currently developinga manufacturing strategy.

Notes: The Arabidopsis thaliana sam1 gene encoding S-adenosylmethionine synthetase (EC 2.5.1.6) was transferred to flax (Linum usitatissimum) cells via Agrobacterium tumefaciens. This enzyme catalyses the conversion of methionine to S-adenosylmethionine (SAM), the major methyl group donor in living cells. The aim of this work was to study the consequences of an increased SAM-synthetase (SAM-S) activity in transgenic cell lines on both the production of mono- and dimethoxylated lignin monomers and the degree of methylesterification of pectins. Hypocotyls were cocultivated with Agrobacterium tumefaciens strain GV3101 (pGV2260) harbouring the pO35SSAM binary vector carrying the sam1 gene under the control of the 35S promoter and the nptII gene for selection of putative transformed cells. Most of the transgenic cell lines exhibited a significant (up to 3.2-fold) increase in SAM-S activity compared to the controls. The results showed that for the cell lines analysed this transformation had no effect on caffeic acid O-methyltransferase (COMT, EC 2.1.1.68) in vitro activity, degree of methoxylation of lignin precursors or lignin deposition, pectin methyltransferase (PMT, EC 2.1.1) in vitro activity, but led to an increase of pectin methylesterification in friable and fast-growing transgenic cell lines.
