    Notizen: Abstract— X-ray double crystal diffractometry and reflection topography were employed to examine the defect structure induced by fatigue of A1 2024 specimens. Analysis after various amounts of tension compression cycling revealed that the excess dislocation density in the surface layer increased rapidly early in the fatigue life, and maintained virtually a plateau value from 20 to 90% of the life. Beyond 90%, the excess dislocation density increased rapidly again to a critical value at failure. Investigation of the defect distribution in depth showed that the excess dislocation density in the bulk material, by contrast to the surface layer, increased more gradually during the life. Using deeply penetrating molybdenum radiation, the grains in the bulk could be analyzed, and thus the fatigue life and onset of failure could be predicted nondestructively. It was also shown that, after removal of the surface layer, the defect structure induced in the bulk by prior cycling was unstable. The resultant extension of fatigue life by surface layer removal was explained on the basis of this structural instability of the bulk material.

    Notizen: A method for quantitative determination of local curvature in elastically bent perfect crystals is described. The method is based on X-ray intensity measurements, and a comparison of experimentally determined values with those derived from diffraction theory gives satisfactory agreement. The method was applied to determine the strain gradient and strain concentration in the vicinity of the notch of an elastically bent crystal. The experimental results were compared with those derived from a similar model based on continuum mechanics. Possible applications of the X-ray method are discussed to obtain experimental solutions to strain analyses which, when approached by continuum mechanics, pose formidable mathematical obstacles.

    Notizen: Long-range, elastic strains emanating from stress raisers, such as holes and inclusions, were investigated in bent silicon crystals which functioned as a model material. The strains and strain interactions were characterized by X-ray Pendellösung fringe topography and were quantitatively evaluated by X-ray intensity measurements of transverse-oscillation topographs. Improvement of strain measurements were obtained by considering the contribution of anomalous transmission to the intensity measurements and by deposition of an appropriate metal film on the developed topograph to heighten the fluorescence of the silver grains in the emulsion. The strain gradient emanating from a bent specimen containing a hole was experimentally determined and the results were compared to calculations based on continuum mechanics having closed-form solution. Good agreement between experiment and theory was obtained. The dependence of strain interaction on interflaw distance was experimentally demonstrated for specimens containing two holes.

    Notizen: Dislocation-free silicon crystals of ({\bar 2 \bar 1 \bar 1}) orientation with a hyperbolic notch, subjected to tensile deformation at 1073 K, were used as model material for the analysis of the induced plastic zone. The results obtained by X-ray topography and X-ray rocking-curve measurements were compared to theoretical calculations and predictions based on continuum mechanics. Good agreement between experiment and theory was obtained regarding the shape of the plastic zone, the contribution of the active slip systems to the size of the plastic zone and the direction of the maximum plastic strain trajectory in the zone. Discrepancies between experiment and theory regarding the symmetry relation of the plastic zone lobes and the dislocation density near the notch tip were attributed to the interactions and resulting work-hardening. These aspects were not taken into account in calculations of continuum mechanics.

    Notizen: A method is presented which combines the analysis of X-ray absorption profiles and selected area X-ray topographs. The method is based on X-ray divergent beam patterns obtained in transmission. The absorption profiles are obtained by unfolding the spectral distribution from the profiles of the deficiency conics, whereas the selected area topographs derive from the corresponding diffraction conics. The synergy of the two techniques makes the method particularly useful for the elucidation of anisotropic effects and inhomogeneities of defect structures. An example is given for the room temperature deformation of beryllium.

    Notizen: The integrated X-ray reflectivity of elastically bent, but otherwise perfect, crystals are calculated for Laue-type reflections covering the entire curvature range. Anomalous transmission and elastic anisotropy are taken into account, and it is shown that both these effects affect appreciably the reflected intensities for both weakly and strongly bent crystals. The validity of the reflectivity-versus-curvature relation thus obtained is experimentally confirmed for a number of reflections from silicon crystals. The implications of the experimental results to brittle fracture are discussed.
