Notes: Defect concentrations in AlxGa1−xSb which is in equilibrium with a liquid phase are calculated. When the liquid phase is Ga rich, a Ga antisite (Ga2−Sb) or an Al antisite (Al2−Sb) is dominant, and the concentrations of vacancies are much smaller than the antisite concentrations. Ga2−Sb is dominant in GaSb equilibrated with a Sb-rich solution, but the concentration of Sb antisites comes close to that of Ga2−Sb as temperature is lowered. For x larger than 0.6, a group-III vacancy is the predominant defect in the case of Sb-rich solutions. Calculated net acceptor concentrations agree well with those determined experimentally. A complex defect composed of GaSb and a Ga vacancy, which have been taken as the dominant residual acceptor, is expected to be negligible.

Notes: Two strong peaks were observed in the electron energy loss spectra of polycrystalline AMoO3 (A=Sr and Ba) perovskites with metallic conductivities. One, observed at 1.7 eV, was attributed to plasmon loss originating from conduction electrons. This explains the reddish color observed. The other, located at ∼5 eV, was attributed to the charge transfer transition from the Mo4d–O2p bonding band to an unoccupied t2g band through photoemission, ultraviolet inverse photoemission, and x-ray absorption near edge structure spectra. No intense peaks were detected in the energy region between the two absorption bands (2.5〈hν〈3.5 ev), indicating the possibility of application in transparent conductors for the ultraviolet region. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We used an rf magnetron reactive sputtering method to prepare SrMoO3 thin film on a silica glass substrate and evaluated its optical properties. The reflectivity of the blue-colored film showed a cutoff due to plasmon at ∼1.7 eV. From a Kramers–Kronig analysis of the reflectivity, the spectral dependence of dielectric constants and optical constants were obtained. They agreed in tendency with the constants determined by spectroscopic ellipsometry. The plasma frequency due to free carriers (4.5 eV) was obtained by application of a Drude model to reflectivity values, which showed that the effective mass of the conduction carrier was m*=2.1m0, where m0 is the free electron mass. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Background  Stratum corneum lipids, particularly ceramides, are important components of the epidermal permeability barrier that are decreased in atopic dermatitis and aged skin. Objectives We investigated the effects of nicotinamide, one of the B vitamins, on biosynthesis of sphingolipids, including ceramides and other stratum corneum lipids, in cultured normal human keratinocytes, and on the epidermal permeability barrier in vivo. Methods The rate of sphingolipid biosynthesis was measured by the incorporation of [14C]-serine into sphingolipids. Results When the cells were incubated with 1–30 μmol L−1 nicotinamide for 6 days, the rate of ceramide biosynthesis was increased dose-dependently by 4·1–5·5-fold on the sixth day compared with control. Nicotinamide also increased the synthesis of glucosylceramide (7·4-fold) and sphingomyelin (3·1-fold) in the same concentration range effective for ceramide synthesis. Furthermore, the activity of serine palmitoyltransferase (SPT), the rate-limiting enzyme in sphingolipid synthesis, was increased in nicotinamide-treated cells. Nicotinamide increased the levels of human LCB1 and LCB2 mRNA, both of which encode subunits of SPT. This suggested that the increase in SPT activity was due to an increase in SPT mRNA. Nicotinamide increased not only ceramide synthesis but also free fatty acid (2·3-fold) and cholesterol synthesis (1·5-fold). Topical application of nicotinamide increased ceramide and free fatty acid levels in the stratum corneum, and decreased transepidermal water loss in dry skin. Conclusions Nicotinamide improved the permeability barrier by stimulating de novo synthesis of ceramides, with upregulation of SPT and other intercellular lipids.

Notes: The magneto-optical properties of PtMnSb Heusler alloy films prepared by a facing targets sputtering (FTS) system have been studied. The specimen films were deposited onto glass substrates heated between 20 and 350 °C. The films exhibiting diffraction peaks of Clb-PtMnSb Heusler alloy were obtained at temperatures above 150 °C. The saturation magnetization 4πMs increased with increasing substrate temperature and the maximum value of magnetization was 5.8 kG, which is lower than PtMnSb bulk magnetization. The polar Kerr rotation measured with a He-Ne laser was evaluated at 1.9° on the glass side when an external dc magnetic field of 7 kOe was applied in a perpendicular direction.

Notes: The facing targets type of sputtering (FTS) apparatus [Naoe, Yamanaka, and Hoshi, IEEE Trans. Magn. MAG-16, 646 (1986)] can prepare amorphous Tb-Fe-Co thin films on plasma-free substrates at temperatures lower than 100 °C at a deposition rate as high as 5000 A(ring)/min. The saturation Kerr rotation at 830 nm, reflectance and coercive force of the specimen films 1000 A(ring) thick were 0.3, 48%, and 6 kOe, respectively, comparable to those obtained in films deposited at a one-hundredth lower rate by conventional rf diode and dc magnetron sputtering. Films with good uniformity of thickness, composition, and characteristics were deposited over the whole area of 12-in. disk substrates made of PMMA or glass, without deteriorating the pregrooves. At this stage, a C/N of about 46 dB has been attained.

Notes: The dependence of structural and magneto-optical (MO) properties of TbFeCo films on Ar pressure, deposition rate, and magnetic field have been investigated by using the facing-target sputtering (FTS) system. The films prepared at high deposition rate and/or with the plasma-free substrate did not have any appreciable columnar structure. The Kerr rotation angle of the films was as high as 0.37°. No significant change in the magneto-optical properties of the films was observed after exposing them to air for 250 days. MO disks fabricated by the FTS system had a high C/N ratio of 57 dB at a bit length of 5 μm.

Notes: We have plated polycrystalline CoxFe3−xO4 (x=0 and 0.43) films on PET and glass substrates at 80–90 °C in an aqueous solution by new three methods: (1) spraying, (2) spin coating, and (3) thin liquid-film methods. The reaction solution is (1) sprayed, (2) spin coated, and (3) flowed through a gap between the substrate and a glass plate, respectively, making a thin (5–400 μm) coating of the solution on the substrate. Since the solution flows off, the composition of the solution on the substrate does not significantly change during the plating, and the ferrite particles formed in the solution are washed away. This improves the film quality compared to previous methods. We have further improved the film quality by introducing CH3COO− buffer ions into the solution, and also by filtering the solution. By the thin liquid-film method, we have obtained maximum deposition rates of ∼160 and ∼300 A(ring)/min by the spraying and the thin liquid-film methods, respectively. The films of Fe3O4 and CoxFe3–xO4 (x=0.43) plated by the thin liquid-film method exhibited a preferential texture of (100) and (111) planes, respectively, parallel to the surface. Both films had a columnar structure normal to the surface, but the magnetization lies in the surface plane.
