    Notes: This review covers the field of liquid diffusion form the time of the publication of the review article by Johnson and Babb in 1957. In Part I a concise introduction is given to the phenomenological description of the diffusion process, followed by a review of the various theories of and model approaches to diffusion in binary mixtures. These are treated in the following categories: hydrodynamic theories, Eyring's theory and the friction coefficient theories. The predictions are compared with the experimental results throughout the review. Part I will be followed by Part II in November reviewing self-diffusion, empirical predictive equations, and experimental techniques. A supplement of critical tabulations of all experimental diffusion data since 1956 has been prepared.

    Notes: The Lighthill transformation is used to determine the rate of mass transfer at high Schmidt numbers to a disk imbedded in a stationary plane below a rotating disk. This diffusion-layer solution breaks down near the center and leading edge of the mass-transfer disk. Solutions in these regions are reported, and a uniformly valid composite solution for the local Nusselt number is determined along with an expression for the average mass-transfer rate to the disk.

    Notes: The System of isothermal, isobaric, perfect gas reactions with stoichiometric kinetics taking place in a tubular reactor is considered where A3 is desired and A5 undesired. A class of optimum selectivity problems is formulated, and distributed bypass of A1 is investigated. It is shown that there are cases where the performance of the best plug flow reactor can be improved substantially (sometimes by more than 100%) by the bypass of A1, but there are also cases where bypass is fruitless.

    Notes: Monte Carlo techniques have been used to simulate the stochastic responses of the nonisothermal packed bed reactor. Random variables with specified ensemble means, ensemble standard deviations, and probability distributions (normal, uniform, or autocorrelated) were introduced as inputs and parameters into the model equations, and the equations were solved repeatedly to provide a sample of the outputs. Sample means and sample standard deviations both in the steady and unsteady state were evaluated and the probability distributions of the output temperature and concentration characterized. Confidence limits for a specified confidence coefficient have been determined from which overdesign factors could be computed.

    Notes: The problem of simultaneous forced and free convection flow of a Newtonian fluid past a hot or cold horizontal flat plate is investigated by means of numerical solutions of the full equations of motion and thermal energy subject only to the Boussinesq approximation. These solutions span the parameter ranges 10 ≤ Re ≤ 100, 0.1 ≤ Pr ≤ 10, and -2.215 ≤ Gr/Re5/2 ≤ 2.215 where Re, Pr, and Gr are based on the ambient free stream fluid properties and the overall plate length l. When Gr 〉 0, the boundary flow near the plate surface is accelerated relative to the corresponding forced convection flow, with a resulting increase in both the local skin friction and heat transfer coefficients. When Gr 〈 0, the boundary flow is decelerated, the local skin friction and heat transfer are decreased, and the flow actually separates for Gr/Re5/2 〈 -0.8 when Pr = 0.7. In the latter circumstance, an increasing degree of upstream influence is observed as Gr/Re5/2 is further decreased.

    Notes: In reacting systems, the number of independent chemical reactions, the number of components, and the number of chemical chemical species are generally assumed to be so related that the sum of the first two equals the third. Standard methods of obtaining the number of independent reactions (that is, formation equations or rank of the element-by-species matrix) may fail when chemical isomers appear in reactant streams, product streams, or both. The errors encountered with various types of isomers are delineated in this paper along with corrective measures. The element-by-species matrix is judged to be more suitable as a starting point than formation equations when matrix size and number of manipulations are considered.

    Notes: The stability of crystal-size distribution (CSD) in the classified product crystallizer with fines removal was investigated using spectral techniques to determine stable solutions of the linearized population balance. The model used to describe the crystallizer assumed rapid growth kinetics (high yield), magma-dependent secondary nucleation, and recycle of dissolved fines. Fines removal and classified product removal were characterized in the model by piece-wise constant removal rates (R - 1) and z times the MSMPR removal rate, respectively.Stability regions were presented as critical values of the kinetic nucleation/growth rate exponent i = d(log B°)/d(log G) versus dimensionless parameters of the system. The parameters which influence CSD stability were maximum fines size and removal rate, product classification size and removal rate, and the magama-characterizing exponent in the nucleation expression. Whether or not dissolved fines are recycled directly back to the crystal magma also influences stability.

    Notes: Data are obtained and a model derived for describing particle size distribution for molten metals atomized by two water jets. The influences of water jet parameters on size distribution and median size are reported and discussed in terms of fundamental quantities and model predictions. The data, which were obtained using fan-spray jets impinging at an apex angle of 60° to atomize Type 4620 steel, indicated that median size was primarly a function of water jet velocity.

    Notes: A method for estimating the effect of hydrogen-bonding on gas solubilities in polar solvents is presented. H-bonding factors, which are based on ideal gas solubilities and solubilities in water, appear to be closely related to H-bonding factors in the simple alcohols. Similarly, H-bonding factors in solvents containing a carbonly group or dihydroxy groups were related to those in acetone. The relation between the various H-bonding factors can be used to estimate solubilities in these and other associated solvents.

    Notes: Models for unsteady water transport in fuel cell configurations of Bacon-Pratt and Whitney type are derived. Tests with a specially constructed isothermal cell producing no water and order of magnitude analysis show that diffusion through the liquid alone cannot account for the observed behavior. An analytical solution which includes diffusion in both the liquid and the gas spaces of the matrix is in better agreement with the data than models which consider diffusion in either the liquid or in the gas phase alone.

    Notes: In Part I of this paper, a thermoelectrogravitational electrophoresis column without reservoirs was proposed for preparative electrophoretic separations. The Furry, Jones, and Onsager procedure in thermal diffusion was applied to develop a transport equation, and its solution for the steady state batch case was employed to demonstrate some typical effects of temperature difference, electric field strength, and membrane spacing on the predicted steady state batch separation in the column.In this part, a theory is first developed from mathematical analysis of a continuous-flow thermoelectrogravitational column without reservoirs by modification of the transport equation to take into account the bulk flow through the column.An experimental center-fed thermoelectrogravitational electrophoresis column and the related equipment used to obtain experimental data to test the theory are described. Further, experimental separation factors as a function of flow rates ranging from 0 to 10 g/min for the bovine albumin system at two pH values (8.6 and 6.0) were obtained using two membrane spacings (0.1354 and 0.3018 cm respectively) at four different electric field strengths (0.0423 to 0.423 volt/cm) and for three different temperature differences of 0°C, 8.5°C, and 16°C. Experimental data indicated that meaningful separations could be obtained using thermoelectrogravitational columns but that the temperature difference has an adverse effect on electrophoretic separation.Analysis of the experimental flow data showed that theory and experiment are not in quantitative agreement. However, there was general, qualitative agreement between theory and experiment for the dependence of separation on field strength, temperature difference, membrane spacing and mobility of the component.

    Notes: The Navier-Stokes equations in stream-function/vorticity form were solved numerically by over-relaxation for the case of steady state, fully developed, isothermal, incompressible viscous Newtonian flow within a rigorously treated toroidal geometry. Solutions were obtained for curvature ratios ranging from 5 to 100 and for Dean numbers as low as I and as high as 1000. The Dean number was demonstrated to be the principal parameter to characterize toroidal flow; however, a second-order dependence upon the curvature ratio above that expressed in the Dean number was observed.     Notes: A pure gold tube was found to give filmwise condensation in the absense of organic contamination in a flow sitution simulating that found in seawater conversion plants. A sensitive test for the presence of organic contamination has been developed. The gold tube, promoted by paraffinic thio-silane or mercaptan, gave 100% excellent dropwise condensation. Overall heat transfer coefficients are reported for filmwise and dropwise condensation. The steamside heat transfer coefficient with dropwise condensation was estimated to be over 0.2 MW/m2-°C (35,000 B.t.u./hr-ft2-°F) at the 95% confidence level.Gold plated tubesSupplied by P.     Notes: An approximate analysis is given for miscible displacement in vertical tubes when density differences between the displaced and displacing fluids give rise to buoyancy forces which affect the velocity distribution significantly. The results of this analysis agree with the available experimental data fairly uniformly over the range of parameters studied experimentally.By analogy with studies of heat transfer in vertcal tubes it is concluded that both cases studied, when a lighter fluid displaces a heavier fluid in upflow, or when the heavier fluid is below the lighter fluid, are potentially unstable flows because buoyancy forces can create points of inflection in the velocity profile; stagnation at the wall also is predicted for upflow when the lighter fluid is on the bottom initially, and this has been observed to induce a sudden transition to turbulence in heat transfer systems.Buoyancy forces reduce the extent of dispersion by flattening the velocity profile when the heavier fluid is on the bottom in upflow. The velocity profile is elongated and the dispersion coefficient is increased when the bottom fluid is lighter than the one it displaces in upflow.

    Notes: A theory has been developed for the mathematical analysis of the transient behavior of a thermoelectrogravitational electrophoresis column without reservoirs using the transport equation approach. Experimental data were obtained with a parallel membrane batch electrophoresis column to test the theory.The transient batch separation factor data obtained for a bovine albumin system under different values of the parameters (electric field strength, mobility, membrane spacing, and temperature difference) are discussed and compared with the results obtained using column transport coefficients empirically determined from steady state flow data (see Part 11). Experimental separation factors for the transient operation agree with those predicted using column transport coefficients (H and K) derived from steady flow studies, providing further support for the use of the Furry, Jones, Onsager approach to the analysis of electrophoresis columns. Failure of quantitative agreement between theory and experiment is attributed to the use of large spacings in obtaining experimental data.

All terms of the Navier-Stokes equation are retained, including the nonlinear inertia terms.Sample calculations for a uniform periodically constricted tube, the geometry of which is connected with the modeling of a packed bed of sand are given, including streamlines, axial and radial velocity profiles, pressure profiles, and the dimensionless pressure drop versus Reynolds number relation. The effect of some geometric characteristics of periodically constricted tubes on their friction factor is investigated numerically, and comparison of some existing experimental data with calculated ones is made.

This paper presents results for a reactor without dispersion or absorption effects; that is, reflexions and refractions have been neglected and the energy has been assumed to propagate in a transparent medium.Computed radiation profiles agree well with published experimental data in a similar lamp-reactor set up.Also, the formulation does not introduce, as it is the case with all line models, any form of singularities in the prediction of radiation flux density values.Finally, a parametric study of the effects of lamp dimensions on the shape of the radiation profiles was also made.

    Notes: The crystallization of NaCl in the presence of Pb+ + as an Impurity in a continuous, mixed suspension, mixed product removal (CMSMPR) crystallizer was investigated. The results indicated that nucleation and growth rates as well as the dominant crystal sizes can be correlated by simple power functions of impurity concentration. The exponents are constants independent of the impurity concentration, thus permitting the prediction of nucleation rates, growth rates and size distributions at various concentrations of that impurity. This model was shown to apply also to other crystallizing systems.

A mathematical model based on an equilibrium theory is presented and is found to be in good agreement with the experimental results. Furthermore, it is shown that when the penetration distance for the cold cycle is less than or equal to that of the hot cycle and the height of the column, the rate of production of pure solvent by this pump may become quite large compared to the rate of production by a pump in which operation is continuous during both half-cycles.

    Notes: An experimental investigation has been conducted on the direct establishment of mass transfer driving forces for the vaporization of n-decane from Celite particles fluidized by air. Ranges of particle sizes and reactor diameters were employed.Concentration profiles of n-decane were determined and were integrated to obtain the actual average concentration difference for the entire bed. The ratio of the actual driving force to the corresponding log-mean value has been correlated with the average particle size, the fluidized bed height, and the modified Reynolds number to produce two relationships capable of predicting these ratios to within 2.5% (83 runs). The results for these mass transfer studies should also be applicable to comparable studies on heat transfer in fluidized beds.

    Notes: Equations are derived and solved numerically for the intrapellet pressure and composition profiles in porous catalysts. The extended dusty-gas model is used to describe the transport for a zero-order, irreversible reaction with mole changes. Results agree with other models in the purely Knudsen and molecular regimes. In the transition region, however, the effectiveness factor is a function of five dimensionless parameters. The calculations predict a significant pressure gradient in the Knudsen regime and transition region but an insignificant gradient in the molecular regime for reactions with mole changes. Since many industrial catalysts operate in the transition region of transport, these calculations are highly desirable in reactor design.

    Notes: Stability of interfaces moving as a result of phase transformation or mass transfer is considered. Effects of transport and of the density difference between phases known to significantly influence stability during solidification and combustion respectively are here studied theoretically in fluid systems. The analysis indicates that instability is possible during vaporization of liquids under vacuum and perhaps during growth of cavitation bubbles. But except when interfacial tension is very low, instability is unlikely during mass transfer in liquid-liquid systems because the density difference between phases is small. A density difference can also produce cellular convection at an unstable interface during solidification.

    Notes: Measurements were made of mass transfer coefficients with gas and liquid phase controlling resistance using a concurrent flow packed column with a wide range of operating conditions and four types of packing.Mass transfer coefficients were much larger than those obtainable in countercurrent towers.The results were correlated with dissipated energy values. The correlations obtained can be used to determine absorption efficiency. Experimental results show that the use of a high velocity concurrent flow column is particularly suitable when mass transfer is controlled by the liquid phase resistance with chemical reaction in the liquid.

    Notes: The time on stream theory of catalyst decay is applied to gas oil cracking selectivity data from a static bed reactor operating with a diffusion limited catalyst. It is found that intraparticle diffusion affects the reactions leading to the disappearance of gas oil to a much greater extent than the reaction leading to the recracking of gasoline and catalyst poisoning. Reasons for this behavior are postulated. It is also found that the overall kinetic order for the rate of disappearance of gas oil is decreased with the result that maximum selectivity occurs at a higher conversion value than for a corresponding diffusion-free catalyst. It is concluded that probably diffusion limitation is not a serious problem with respect to gasoline selectivity in commercial reactors.

    Notes: The tables of Pitzer et al. for the compressibility factor of nonpolar substances have been extended to polar fluids for the gaseous and liquid regions for reduced temperatures from 0.8 to 1.15 and reduced pressures from 0.2 to 6.0. Available experimental PVT data for polar fluids were related to the acentric factor and fourth parameter at constant reduced temperature and pressure by a quadratic least squares procedure. The resulting relationships reproduced the data utilized with good accuracy for the entire region considered.

    Notes: Self-diffusion coefficients of 15 liquids have been measured as a function of temperature between their melting and boiling points. The systems investigated were the benzenes, C6H5X where X = H, F, Cl, Br, and I, n-paraffins, CnHn + 2 where n = 7, 9, 10, 12, 14, 16, and 18, acetone, acetic acid and water. The pulsed nmr technique was employed for the diffusion measurements. In addition, the viscosities of the halogenated benzenes have been measured between 20°C and their melting points.The diffusion results obtained in this study have been found in excellent agreement with the best values available for benzene (Collings and Mills, 1970) and water (Longworth, 1960). The relation between the apparent molecular diameter d (d = 2.24(η VD/RT)1/2) and the critical volume as suggested by Dullien (1972) has been extended to include the temperature dependence of d. It is also shown that the temperature dependence of d is similar for all liquids studied here with respect to the reduced temperature. The increase of d for Tr 〈 0.46 shows the invalidity of the Stokes-Einstein relation for this temperature range (Tr = T/Tc).A normalized plot of d has been found very useful in checking the consistency of viscosity and self-diffusion data. The relations proposed in this work can be used to predict self-diffusion coefficients and viscosities over the normal liquid range.

    Notes: Temperature control of subcooled reflux in a distillation column was studied experimentally using coolant flow rate as the manipulative variable. Methanol vapor was condensed and subcooled at one atmosphere in a vertical heat exchanger with 210 copper tubes (0.77 cm I.D., 91.5 cm long). Cooling water flowed countercurrently through the shell side (20.6 cm I.D.).A proportional-integral feedback controller provided good temperature control at normal design throughputs. But dynamic control performance deteriorated at low throughputs (or large areas). Thus the normal conservative design practice of providing excess area in this type of condenser leads to poorer temperature control.

    Notes: The Deacon reaction (HCI + 1/4 O2 ⇋ 1/2 Cl2 + 1/2 H2O) was studied in a catalytic fluid bed reactor. Reaction rates found from measurements in differential and integral reactors were represented by the Langmuir-Hinshelwood type rate equation. Considering the effect of catalysts in the dilute phase, it was found that conversions in a fluid bed reactor can be calculated without any modifying parameters. It is pointed out that the wake fraction, which has been necessary to consider for fast reactions in a fluid bed reactor, is attributed to the dilute phase effect.

    Notes: Until recently, the subject of chemical process synthesis was largely ignored in the chemical engineering literature despite its importance in chemical engineering practice. However since 1968, attention to the subject has greatly increased and important progress has been made. This review article critically surveys the readily accessible literature in chemical process synthesis from two points of view: theory and applications. It is concluded that a number of effective synthesis tools are now available for application in industrial chemical process design. However, much more remains to be done, particularly with regard to the development of synthesis procedures which can lead to novel processing system structures.

    Notes: For drying and moistening processes in batch fluidization and fluidization in a horizontal exchanger, the overall mathematical model describing simultaneous heat and mass exchange is given. On this basis, the problem of finding the optimal temperatures of inlet gas is formulated and investigated for the case when inlet gas humidity is constant. It is explained that when unit economical values of gas and solid phases are linear with regard to unit available energies (exergies), the economical problem of minimum costs is equivalent to the thermodynamical problem of minimum available energy (exergy) dissipation. Therefore, the performance index expression in exergy terms is formulated as a functional of the Bolza form. The dynamic programming method is used to obtain results of optimal trajectories and decisions. The dependence of optimal process time on apparatus price, which is characterized here by a Lagrangian multiplier λ, is pointed out.The results indicate that the constant gas inlet temperature policy commonly applied to the processes considered here prevents attainment of the process optimum. In fact, increasing inlet temperature until an admissible gas temperature is attained is the optimal policy.

Vessel diameters of 0.245 and 0.372 m, turbine impellers of diameters 0.0762 and 0.127 m in two locations, four organic- and three water-dispersed systems of a wide range of properties, and a wide range of operating conditions were studied. The data for average drop diameter and dispersed-phase holdup, from which specific interfacial area may be computed, were successfully correlated through modification of the theories of maximum drop size in an isotropically turbulent fluid.

    Notes: Rates of homogeneous polymerization of aqueous solutions of acrylamide were measured in an annular flow reactor at 35°C. By independent determinations of the quantum yield for the initiation step and the light intensity, it was possible to identify reaction orders and to calculate ratios of rate constants for the polymerization process.An empirical kinetics model, based upon producing activated molecules solely from initiator (K2S2O8), best fit the data. According to this model the rate is 3/2 order in monomer concentration, 1/2 order in initiator, and proportional to the 1/2 power of the intensity of absorbed radiation. The effect of monomer concentration on the induction period and tlie 3/2 order with respect to monomer indicate a complex initiation process.

    Notes: A direct search procedure utilizing pseudo random numbers over a region is presented to solve nonlinear programming problems. After each iteration the size of the region is reduced so that the optimum can be found as accurately as desired. The ease of programming, the speed of convergence, and the reliability of results make the procedure very attractive for solving nonlinear programming problems.

    Notes: A liquid membrane consisting of an oil layer contained between two aqueous phases was found to leak when used to transport ions selectively from one adjacent phase to another. The source of the difficulty was found to be the formation of a separate aqueous phase within the oil layer. This phase could be eliminated by increasing the pressure within the oil layer.The pressure stabilized membrane was then tested and the observed rates of mass and electrical transport compared with values computed using a mathematical model. The comparisons were satisfactory considering the fact that no adjustable parameters were used to fit the data.

    Notes: Aqueous solutions 1.65 × 10-4 to 1.10 × 10-2 molar in the nonionic surfactant Triton X-100 are subjected to membrane ultrafiltration over the temperature range of 22 to 50°C in a continuous flow, thin channel cell, with channel Reynolds numbers from 50 to 1175. Data for the ultrafiltrate flux through the optimum polyelectrolyte complex membrane (of the three tested) are correlated by an equation involving the in-series resistances of the membrane and of the polarized boundary layer of the sufactant rejected by the membrane, with the latter resistance varied over a wide range. The correlations are used to estimate the required membrane area and resultant ultrafiltrate concentration of surfactant to achieve any specified water recovery using cells-in-series and cells-in-parallel operation. The gelation concentration and surfactant mass transfer coefficient are used to estimate water flux in the gel-polarization region.

    Notes: A predictive model of hollow fiber reverse osmosis systems is developed using the equivalent annulus assumption. The fraction of feed recovered Φ depends on five parameters. Optimum values exist for the ratio of the inside to outside fiber radius ri/ro and for the outside fiber radius ro. For dilute systems, a simple closed form expression is obtained for Φ which enables one to determine optimum values easily.The effects of pressure, temperature, flow rate, concentration, viscosity of the feed, system length, membrane rejection parameter, and number of fibers are studied. Countercurrent is superior to concurrent operation.
