    Description / Table of Contents: The progress of condensation in the testor (Kesternich) cabinet and the dependence of condensation on the properties of the tested materialCondensation in the tested cabinet proceeds in principle as follows: (a)Rapid increase to a first maximum, which depends on the tested material, and in the case of the same material on the thickness of the test piece.(b)Slowly rising undulated curve, the maxima of which coincide with the temperature maxima on the surface of the test piece and those of the period of regulation. The rate of increase is hardly dependent on the material and its thickness. The amplitude of the waves increases with increasing heat capacity of the material.Condensation ist stronger on metal than on glass and organic coatings; stranger on zinc than on cadmium.No influence of the roughness of the surface could be detected. The influence of the material on the condensation confirms previous results by Tammann.
    Notes: Die Betauung im Testergerät verlauft grundsätzlich wie folgt: (a)Rascher Anstieg zu einem ersten Maximum, dessen Höhe von der Art des Werkstoffes und bei gleichem Werkstoff von der Blechdicke abhangig ist.(b)Langsamer ansteigender Wellenzug, dessen Maxima mit Ternperaturmaxima der Blechoberfläche und der Regelungsperiode zusammenfallen. Die Steigung ist von der Werkstoffart und der Dicke wenig abhängig. Die Amplitude der Wellen nimmt mit steigender Wärmekapazitat zu.Metalle werden stärker betaut als Glas und organische Überzüge, Zink stärker als Cadmium.Ein Einfluß der Rauhtiefe war nicht festzustellen. Die gefundene Werkstoff- abhängigkeit der Betauung steht mit früheren Ergebnissen von Tammann in Einklang.

    Description / Table of Contents: Causes of scale formationContinuous operation of many appliances is impeded by scale formation which is most frequently encountered on heat transmitting surfaces. The present article deals with crystalline scale formed by dissolved substances on metallic materials.A theoretical section, dealing with the influence on scale formation of such factors as pressure, temperature, extraneous matter, flow velocity and condition of the solid surface, is followed by the description of experimental investigations.The phenomenon investigated as a model is the crystallisation in radioactively marked CaSo4 solution (Ca45 and S35, respectively). The experiments show, in keeping with the theory, that macroscope scale can only appear when the solution is over-saturated. There are no essential differences as between corrosive and non-corrosive materials, the formation of blisters on the solid surface tends to promote scale formation. In this connection, the roughness of the solid surface is likewise of importance. The experimental results give rise to certain practical conclusions.
    Notes: Durch die Verkrustung, die insbesondere and wärmeübertragenden Oberflächen auftritt, ist ein Dauerbetrieb mancher Apparate nur begrenzt möglich. Die vorliegende Arbeit behandelt kristalline Krusten, wie sie sich aus gelösten Stoffen an metallischen Werkstoffen bilden.Nach einem theoretischen Abschnitt, in dem der Einfluß des Druckes, der Temperature, fremder Stoffe, der Strömungsgeschwindigkeit der Lösung sowie der Zustand der festen Oberfläche auf die Krustenbildung diskutiert wird, werden experimentelle Untersuchungen beschrieben.Als Modellvorgang ist die Kristallisation aus radioaktiv markierten CaSo4- Lösungen (45Ca bzw. 35S) untersucht, Die Versuche zeigen in Übereinstimmung mit der Theorie, daß makroskopische Krusten erst bei einer übersättigten Lösung entstehen können. Wesentliche Unterschiede liegen zwischen korrodierenden und nicht korrodierenden Werkstoffen vor. Blasenbildung an der festen Oberfläche erhöht die Krustenbildung. Hierbei ist auch die Rauhigkeit der festen Oberfläche von Bedeutung. Aus den Versuchsergebnissen werden schließlich Folgerungen fü die Praxis gezogen.

    Description / Table of Contents: Using auto-radiograms for the investigation of phenomena on metal surfacesFor the examination of boundary layer phenomena on solid surfaces, radio-active isotopes can be used with advantage. In this connection, the local distribution of radiating matter can be ascertained with the aid of auto-radiograms.The present article deals with the use of auto-radiograms for studying the separation and adsorption phenomena on metal surfaces. Special attention is paid to the influence of grain boundaries, displacements and orientations of the crystallites as well as the influence of macroscopic roughness on the adsorption of aqueous electrolyte solutions. The tests were carried out with β radiating isotopes 147 Pm and 204 T1.The auto-radiograms show that any zones of disturbance and any inhomogeneities on a solid metal surface are the first to be covered with radio-active substance. It is, for instance, found that increased adsorption takes place at grain boundaries and points of displacement. It is also shown that the separation is influenced by the orientation of the crystallites. The test results give rise to the conclusion that auto-radiograms can also be used for the clarification of other boundary layer phenomena.
    Notes: Zur Untersuchung von Grenzflächenvorgängen an festen Oberflächen werden mit Vorteil radioaktive Isotope eingesetzt. Die örtliche Verteilung des strahlenden Materials kann man dabei mit Hilfe der Autoradiographie feststellen.Die vorliegende Arbeit beschreibt die Verwendung der Autoradiographie beim Studium von Abscheide- und Adsorptionsvorgängen an Metalloberflächen. Insbesondere wird hier der Einfluß von Korngrenzen, Versetzungen und Orientierungen der Kristallite sowie makroskopischen Rauhigkeiten auf die Adsorption aus wäßrigen Elektrolytlösungen behandelt. Die Versuche wurden mit den β-strahlenden Isotopen 147Pm und 204T1 durchgeführt.Aufschlußreiche Autoradiographien zeigen, daß jede Störstelle und jede Inhomogenität an einer festen Metalloberfläche bevorzugt mit radioaktiver Substanz belegt wird. So beobachtet man z. B., daß an Korngrenzen und Versetzungen eine verstärkte Adsorption auftritt. Ferner wird gezeigt, daß die Orientierung der Kristallite die Abscheidung beeinflußt. Die Versuchsergebnisse weisen darauf hin, daß auch andere Grenzflächenvorgänge mit der Autoradiographie geklärt werden können.

    Description / Table of Contents: The influence of frequencies on the impedance of inhibitor films on iron in acidsApparatus is described for the exact measurement of the impedances of oxide and inhibitor films on metal surfaces and for the simultaneous determination of the film resistances and capacitances of inhibitor films as a function of the a. c. frequency. It was found that inhibitor films on metals show exactly the same behaviour as oxide films. The resistance theory of the inhibitor effect, formulated by W. Machu, has again been confirmed.
    Notes: Beschrieben wird eine Apparatur zur exakten Messung der Impedanzen von Oxyd- und Inhibitorfilmen auf Metalloberflächen und zur gleichzeitigen Ermittlung der Filmwiderstände und Kapazitäten von Inhibitorfilmen in Abhängig keit von der Wechselstromfrequenz. Fest-gestellt wurde, daß sich Inhibitorfilme auf Metallen vollkommen gleichartig verhalten wie Oxydfilme. Die Widerstands-theorie der Inhibitorwirkung won w. Machu wurde erneut bestätigt.

    Description / Table of Contents: The mutual effects of corrosion protection and limeCathodically protected steel parts buried in the ground affect lime and are affected by it if these parts are either coated with lime milk or if, being uncoated, they are buried in calcareous soil. Systematic tests have shown that the cathodic corrosion protection can be decisively influenced by these factors. A lime concentration on the surface of cathodically protected installations may, inter alia, give rise to certain favourable herbicide and insecticide properties. The minimum potentials required to a reliable cathodic corrosion protection in soil containing an excess of lime are stated.
    Notes: Kathodisch geschützte Stahlteile treten im Erdreich mit Kalk in Wechselwirkung, wenn es sich umn Teile handelt, deren äußere Oberfläche mit Kalkmilch überzogen wurde, oder wenn es sich um nicht gekalkte Teile handelt, die in kalkhaltige Böden verlegt wurden. Der kathodische Korrosionsschutz kann, was durch die Ergebnisse systematischer Versuche belegt wird, durch diese Faktoren entscheidend beeinflußt werden. Durch Kalkanreicherung an der Oberfläche kathodisch geschützter Anlagen können sich u.a. gewisse günstige herbicide und insekticide Eigenschaften einstellen. Die zur Erzielung eines sicheren kathodischen Korrosionsschutzes in Böden mit Kalküberschuß erforderlichen Mindestpotentiale werden angegeben.

    Description / Table of Contents: VitonThe synthetic elastomer “Viton” possesses unusual mechanical, thermal and corrosion-chemical properties which justify its application at exposed points, and make it desirable. An introductory survey of the types available and of their structure and manufacture is followed by more detailed particulars concerning the physical, especially the mechanical and thermal, properties and the corrosion-chemical behaviour of differently composed Viton products in contact with numerous corrosives. In conclusion, practical applications are discussed which show that Viton can be used with advantage, especially where combined stresses are encountered.
    Notes: Das synthetische Elastomer „Viton“ besitzt ungewöhnliche mechanische, thermische und korrosionschemische Eigenschaften, die dessen Einsatz an exponierten Stellen rechtfertigen und empfehlen. Einem einleitenden Überblick über verfügbare Sorten und deren Aufbau und Herstellung folgen ausführliche Angaben über die physikalischen, insbesondere mechanischen und thermischen Eigenschaften, sowie über das korrosionschemische Verhalten verschieden aufgebauter Viton-Produkte gegenüber zahlreichen Angriffsmitteln. Abschließend zeigen der Praxis entstammende Einbaubeispiele, daß Viton insbesondere unter kombinierten Beanspruchungen nutzbringend eingesetzt werden kann.

    Description / Table of Contents: The aggressivity of the soilThe aggressivity of the soil can only be determined by a number of tests. On the strength of the research work carried out so far (by Starkey and White, von Wolzogen-Kühr, and Maurin) the author suggests that aggressivity should be defined on the basis of the variations of the pH value, of the conductivity and of the redox potential as a function of the degree of dilution (with a moisture content ranging from 15 to 90 per cent.). In this connection, aeration is ignored, since the soil is apt to become alternately aerobic and anaerobic as a result of seasonal fluctuations.
    Notes: Die Aggressivität des Bodens läßt sich nur rnit Hilfe mehrerer Bestimmungen definieren. Auf Grund der bisherigen Versuche (Starkey u. White, von Wolzogen- Kühr, Maurin) schlägt der Verfasser vor, die Veränderungen van pH, Leitfähigkeit und Redoxpotential mit steigender Verdünnung (Wassergehalte 15 bis 9O%) als Grundlage für die Definition der Aggressivität zu benützen. Die Belüftung wird hierbei nicht berücksichtigt, da ein Boden im Laufe der Jahreszeiten sowohl aerob als auch anaerob werden kann.

    Description / Table of Contents: Reaction between hydrazine and iron oxidesExperience has shown that the use of hydrazine for the removal of dissolved oxygen may entail certain practical difficulties, mainly due to the fact that hydrazine is able to reduce the higher iron oxides under suitable conditions. The magnetite thereby formed is, e. g., able to form cathodic areas which may accelerate the corrosion of the surface to be protected.In the present investigation, the attempt has been made to ascertain the effect of the thermal pretreatment on the reactivity of a precipitated ferrihydroxide. In this connection, chemical and radiographical methods have been used to study the decomposition of the hydrazine as well as the reduction of ferric-iron and the crystallisation of the ferric-hydroxide. The results show, inter alia, that under the test conditions here encountered, the greatest magnetite formation takes place at those ferric-hydroxide products which had been dried between 150 and 250° C. It was also found that all the agents become completely inactive if the pre-treatment temperature exceeds 350° C. Finally, it was also found that the effect of the products in accelerating the decomposition of the hydrazine likewise depends on the pretreatment temperature. This relationship, however, is difficult to define so that a complete explanation cannot yet be given. It is, however, clear that the reactivity of the products decreases as the degree of crystallisation, i. e. the pretreatment temperature, increases.
    Notes: Die Erfahrung hat gezeigt, daß die Verwendung des Hydrazins zur Entfernung des gelösten Sauerstoffs gewisse praktische Schwierigkeiten mit sich bringen kann. Hauptsächlich beruht dies darauf, daß Hydrazin die höheren Eisenoxyde unter geeigneten Verhältnissen reduzieren kann. Der dabei gebildete Magnetit kann z. B. kathodische Gebiete bilden, wodurch die Korrosion der zu schützenden Oberflächen beschleunigt werden kann.In dieser Untersuchung wurde versucht, die Einwirkung der thermischen Vorbehandlung auf die Reaktivität eines gefällten Ferrihydroxyds zu bestimmen. Dabei hat man den Zerfall des Hydrazins sowie die Reduktion des Ferrieisens als auch die Kristallisation des Ferrihydroxyds mit chemischen und röntgenographischen Methoden studiert. Die erhaltenen Resultate zeigen z. B., daß unter den verwendeten Versuchsbedingungen die größte Magnetitbildung an solchen Ferrihydroxydpräparaten stattfindet, die bei 150 bis 250° C getrocknet waren. Weiter hat man gefunden, daß alle Präparate völlig inaktiv werden, wenn die Vorbehandlungstemperatur 350° C übersteigt. Schließlich zeigen die Resultate, daß die den Zerfall des Hydrazins beschleunigende Einwirkung der Präparate auch von der Vorbehandlungstemperatur abhängig ist. Diese Abhängigkeit ist jedoch schwer zu überblicken, so daß eine vollständige Erklärung noch nicht zu geben ist. Es steht aber fest, daß die Reaktivität der Präparate mit steigendem Kristallisationsgrad, d. h. mit steigender Vorbehandlungstemperatur, kleiner wird.

    Description / Table of Contents: The corrosion behaviour of steels in contact with mercury and sodium amalgamNon-alloyed steels as well as alloyed steels with a nickel content not exceeding about 20 per cent. are not wetted by mercury even a higher temperatures and are therefore resistant to mercury. In contrast, sodium amalgam has a wetting effect and causes a slight superficial attack through dissolution of the metals in mercury. The degree of corrosion increases with the content, in the alloys, of the metals nickel and manganese which are better soluble than iron. The resistance is increased by a high content of chrome which has an extremely low solubility in mercury. With chromium-soft steels of low nickel content which are least exposed to sodium amalgam attack, the reduction amounts, at 500°C, to about 0.2 gram pr. square metre pr. day or 0.008 mm per annum. If, in addition to sodium amalgam, the material is also exposed to sodium chloride, the corrosion intensity is about three times greater. Alloyed steels are, however, well suited as materials in the amalgam technology whilst non-alloyed steels have not been found satisfactory.
    Notes: Unlegierte sowie legierte Stähle, deren Nickelgehalt etwa 20% nicht überschreitet, werden won Quecksilber auch bei höheren Temperaturen nicht benetzt und sind daher gegen dieses beständig. Natriumamalgam benetzt dagegen und verursacht geringen oberflächenhaften Angriff durch Auflösung der Metalle in Quecksilber. Der Angriff ist um so größer, je höher der Gehalt der Legierungen an den besser als Eisen löslichen Metallen Nickel und Mangan ist. Hoher Gehalt an Chrom, das extrem geringe Löslichkeit in Quecksilber aufweist, verbessert die Beständigkeit. Bei den am wenigsten van Natriumamalgam angegriffenen chromreichen, nickelarmen Stählen beträgt die Abtragung bei 500° C etwa 0,2 g/m2. Tg. bzw. 0,008 mm/ahr. Wirkt neben Natriumamalgam gleichzeitig Natriumchlorid auf den Werkstoff ein, ist der Angriff ungefähr um den Faktor 3 größer. Doch erweisen sich legierte Stähle als Werkstoffe in der Amalgamtechnik als gut geeignet, unlegierte Stähle bewahren sich nicht.

    Description / Table of Contents: Properties and corrosion resistance of nickel materials containing molybdenumA fairly detailed description is given of the nickel-cum-molybdenum materials with enhanced corrosion resistance against acids, used for equipment in the chemical industry. The discussion ranges over beat resistance, treatment methods, machining, hot forming, solution treatment, welding methods. The resistance ranges of NiMo30Fe, NiMo16Cr, NiFe22Cr22Mo and other nickel-molybdenum alloys (Ni-0-nel) are plotted in diagrams. Attention is drawn to metallurgical peculiarities and electro-chemical properties, and especially to possible defects with some of these alloys, due to inadequate heat treatment or to welding.
    Notes: Die für den Apparatebau in der chemischen Industrie gebrauchten Werkstoffe mit erhöhter Korrosionsbeständigkeit gegen Säuren auf der Basis Nickel mit Molybdän werden eingehender behandelt: Warmfestigkeit, Methoden der Verarbeitung, spangebende Verarbeitung, Warmverformung, Lösungsglühen, Schweißverfahren. Die Beständigkeitsbereiche für NiMo30Fe, NiMo16Cr, NiFe22Cr22Mo und andere molybdänhaltige Nickel-Legierungen (Ni-O-nel) werden in Diagrammen dargestellt. Auf metallurgische Eigenheiten und elektrochemische Eigenschaften wird hingewiesen, insbesondere auf Fehlermöglichkeiten bei einigen dieser Legierungen durch ungenügende Warmbehandlung und beim Schweißen.

It was thus found that the adsorption is completed within a short time already, and that it depends on the type and condition of the solid surface. Moreover, the dependency of the quantity adsorbed of the concentration and temperature of the solution has been determined. With the aid of auto-radiographic exposures of the metal surfaces covered with 147Pm and from other results, it can be concluded that 147Pm occurs in aqueous solution as a radio colloid. Finally, reference is made to the use of the isotope for various investigations.
    Notes: Die Adsorption von 147Pm ist an verschiedenen metallischen Werkstoffen sowie an einigen Kunststoffen untersucht worden. So konnte gezeigt werden, daß die Adsorption schon nach kurzer Zeit beendet ist, und von Art und Zustand der Feststoffoberfläche abhängt. Ferner wurde die Abhängigkeit der adsorbierten Menge von der Konzentration und der Temperatur der Lösung bestimmt. Mit Hilfe autoradiographischer Aufnahmen der mit 147Pm belegten Metalloberflächen kann im Zusammenhang mit den anderen Ergebnissen geschlossen werden, daß 147Pm in wäßriger Lösung als Radiokolloid auftritt. Schließlich wird auf die Verwendung des Isotops für verschiedene Untersuchungen hingewiesen.

    Description / Table of Contents: Deterioration of timber in cooling towers. Possible causesTimber in cooling towers is always exposed to exacting working conditions and shows many signs of deterioration. In order to clarify two specific cases of deterioration, the timber of cooling towers (redwood and fir) has been subjected to mechanical tests for loss of mechanical strength whilst the cooling water and circulating water have been analyzed. It was found that alkaline water with iron content causes a marked loss of mechanical strength and that the impregnation of the wood with tar oils has a very great protective effect as it inhibits the corrosion caused by iron nails.
    Notes: Holz, das durchgängig in Kühltürmen harten Betriebsbedingungen ausgesetzt ist, zeigt vielartige Schäden. Zur Aufklärung zweier Schadensfälle wurde das Holz von Kühltürmen (Redwood u. Fichte) mechanisch auf Wertminderung (Steifigkeits-Einbuße) sowie das Kühlwasser und das Umlaufwasser analytisch untersucht. Festgestellt wurde, daß alkalische, eisenhaltige Wässer zu starkem Steifigkeitsverlust (Schwächung) führen und, daß Imprägnieren des Holzes mit Teerölen in hohem Maße zerstörungsschü;tzend wirkt, da dies auf die Korrosion eiserner Nägel inhibierend wirkt.

    Description / Table of Contents: Some observations on the part played by oxide with defects at tubes of high-pressure boilersThe article describes four cases of damage to tubes in high-pressure boilers where the damage is ascribed to the presence of oxide on the tube. This oxide covers the interior surface and is formed either during the manufacture of the tubes or during the assembly:  -  heat treatment bending, welding, etc. With all the tubes concerned, the heat transfer was found to be very high. Only seldom did the thickness of the oxide layer exceed 0.5 mm.It may happen that an adhesive oxide layer peels off over a large area without falling into pieces, and without any particles entering the circulation. The layer will then prevent the water from having contact with the tube surface, which leads to extensive deformations of the tube.But the oxide layer may also fall into pieces, and the small flakes thus formed may gather at certain points. Below such concentrations, one often funds local corrosion phenomena which are ascribed to local overheating, to temperature fluctuations, and to the concentration of the solution at these points. In this connection the original oxide can easily be distinguished from the oxide newly formed through corrosion.The first of the two varieties of phenomena was observed in 15 per cent. of the boilers with natural circulation with were worked at pressures above 55 kgs. The second variety was observed with another 15 per cent. of the same type of boiler. In contrast, no such phenomena were observed with boilers having forced ventilation.These observations give rise to the recommendation not to use, for high-pressure boilers, any tubes containing oxides.
    Notes: Die Arbeit beschreibt vier Schadensfalle an Rohren in Hochdruckkesseln, bei denen als Ursache die Anwesenheit von Oxyd auf dem Rohr angenommen wird. Dieses Oxyd bedeckt die Innenfläche und entsteht entweder während der Herstellung der Rohre oder beim Einbau: Wärmebehandlung, Biegen, Schweißen usw. Bei allen betroffenen Rohren war der Wärmeübergang sehr hoch. Die Dicke der Oxydschicht übertraf nur selten 0,5 mm.Eine festhaftende Oxydschicht kann sich unter Umständen in größerer Ausdehnung ablösen, ohne dabei zu zerfallen und ohne daß Teilchen davon in den Kreislauf gelangen. Sie verhindert dann den Zutritt von Wasser zur Rohroberfläche, was zu ausgedehnten Verformungen des Rohres führt.Die Oxydschicht kann jedoch auch zerfallen und die entstehenden kleinen Schuppen können sich an bestimmten Stellen ansammeln. Unter derartigen Ansammlungen findet man oft örtliche Korrosionserscheinungen, die örtlicher Überhitzung, Temperaturschwankungen und der Konzentration der Lösung an diesen Stellen zugeschrieben werden. Dabei kann man das ursprünglich vorhandene und das durch die Korrosion entstandene Oxyd gut unterscheiden.Die erstgenannte der beiden Erscheinungen wurde in 15 % der Kessel mit Naturumlauf beobachtet, die bei Drucken oberhalb 55 at gefahren wurden. Die zweite Erscheinung wurde bei weiteren 15 % des gleichen Kesseltyps beobachtet. Bei Kesseln mit Zwangsumlauf hingegen traten diese Erscheinungen nicht auf.Die beschriebenen Beobachtungen sind Anlaß zu der Empfehlung, beim Bau von Hochdruckkesseln keine Rohre zu verwenden, die Oxyde enthalten.
