Description / Table of Contents:
The poisoning of the NH,-synthesis has been investigated at 450 °C and normal pressure using a flow-gas apparatus and a promoter-free iron catalyst.Definite amounts of water vapour (from 0.008 to 4.160 percent by volume) added to the stoichiometric synthesis-gas mixture caused a decrease of the synthesis efficiency from 93.4 to 0.5 percent of the blank value, this being 77.5 percent of the equilibrium value. At the beginning of poisoning the ammonia concentration rises for a short time, as is well known. On the other hand it was found that after the end of water vapor feeding the ammonia concentration decreases for a short time before increasing again. The effects are interpretet. The catalyst, having a total surface of 250m2 (BET), chemisorbed 1.2-32.2 mg oxygen. The synthesis efficiency decreases linearly with the chemisorbed amount of oxygen; at incomplete covering of the surface, however, there is already reached a standstill of the reaction.
Notes:
