Notes: The partial unfolding of folded lamellae crystals is taken as point of departure for the development of a model to describe the elastic properties of cold-drawn polymer filaments. The resulting relation sums the van der Waals tensile compliance and the spectroscopic tensile compliance of the polymer backbone chain in proportion to the length of folded and unfolded crystal lamellae, respectively, in the drawn filament. Many reported tensile moduli of drawn filaments of semicrystalline polymers are substantially below the predicted value. However, specially careful drawing experiments are rewarded with tensile moduli which closely approach the magnitude predicted by the relation presented here.

Notes: The data of Part I are examined in the light of accepted theories. The specific refractive index increment ñ of most polymer solutions lies between -0.2 and +0.2 ml./g., although larger values can obtain in circumstances wherein the scattering unit is unusually large, e.g., solutions of partially neutralized polyacids the units of which contain the gegenions. ñ depends on the indices of solvent n1 and polymer n2. Among common solvents, water and 1-bromonaphthalene are capable of affording high positive and negative values, respectively, for n. The Gladstone-Dale rule applies rigorously to pure and mixed solvents, but the Lorenz-Lorentz expression is preferable for evaluating n2. Results of current theories applied to mixed solvents and copolymers are summarized. In the former, the true molecular weight M is determined by using ñ and the variation of solvent index with composition. For a copolymer of monomers A and B, M as well as Ma and Mb are obtainable by using ñ, ña, and ñb. Dispersion is expressed as (ñ)λ = (ñ)436[D′ + D″/λ2] at a wavelength λ, and dispersive constants D′ and D″ are evaluated for some solutions. ∂ñ/∂T is generally 3.2 (±2.3) × 10-4 ml./g./°C. and changes very little with λ. When ñ increases with M, the limiting characteristic value is derived (at 1/M = 0) from a plot of ñ versus 1/M. ñ can be determined to a maximum accuracy of 1% by using n2 calculated from the Lorenz-Lorentz equation and the experimental partial specific volume.

Notes: The influence of fillers on the post-extrusion swelling (Barus effect) of polymer melts is explored with the use of three model fillers in poly(styrene-acrylonitrile). The filler effect is shown to be more complex than simple dilution of the polymer. The role of such factors as melt rigidity, tendency toward plug flow, trapping of matrix in filler aggregates, and filler migration are considered.

Notes: The interfacial polymerization technique was used in the preparation of organotion polyesters. Dialkyltin dihalides dissolved in an organic solvent immiscible with water were reacted with the dialkali metal or ammonium salt of a dicarboxylic acid. High yields of polyesters were obtained after short reaction times. The polyesters were generally insoluble and were high melting. Copolymers were also obtained.

Notes: Asphaltenes from three asphalts of very diverse service properties were fractionated by gel permeation chromatography (GPC) on crosslinked polystyrene gels. Broad molecular weight distributions were found spanning from 700 to more than 40,000. Each sample consisted of two portions of similar quantities, one peaking around 1000 molecular weight, the other around 14,000. The distribution of structural features measured by infrared spectroscopy is discussed briefly.

Notes: Stress relaxation in rubber stocks containing various fillers was measured at room temperature, and an empirical equation found for relating decrease in tension, ft, over a period of time from 0.1 sec. to 6 months, namely: \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ f_t = f_{1.0} t^{- n} $\end{document} where f1.0 is force after 1 min. of relaxation, n is the relaxation rate of material (by definition) and t is time in minutes. Raw rubbers were examined under compression, and cured rubbers were tested under tension. In both cured and raw butadiene rubbers, stress relaxation was found to be a viscous-controlled process. In raw rubbers, reinforcing carbon blacks decrease the rate of relaxation, while in cured rubbers the effect of carbon black is very small. However, in swollen (to VR = 0.25), cured rubbers, the rate of relaxation increases with increasing carbon black loading, indicating a slippage and/or breakage of some carbon black-polymer attachments.

Notes: The permeability to water and the average pore radius of transparent hydrogels from glyceryl methacrylate (GMA), 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA), propylene glycol monoacrylate (PGMA), and a polyelectrolyte complex were determined. The transport process was found to be a predominantly viscous flow in the polyelectrolyte complex and in the more dilute GMA hydrogels (74-94% water), but in HEMA hydrogel (40% water), and PGMA hydrogels (40-60% water), diffusion seemed to play a more important part in the movement of water through the gel. These hydrogels are potentially useful for surgical implants in the cornea. A comparison is made with the flow conductivity of the corneal stroma at normal hydration.

Notes: It was shown that the shape of the scattering pattern is not only related to the shape but also to the face-orientation of the lamellar scattering units, and an actual observation of its characteristic shape depends on the amount and dispersion of their spiral angle. The following results were obtained: (1) For observing a cross-pattern, the critical spiral angles corresponding to minimum and maximum dispersions are 7.5° and 30° respectively, whereas in an actual fiber, coir, the critical angle is about 16.75°. (2) The jute pattern changes from a uniformly narrow to a triangular shape on disorientation and reverts to the former on reorientation. The corresponding changes in ramie are from a triangular to a uniformly wide and then to a uniformly narrow shape. Both native and disoriented cottons give weak, fan-shaped scattering superimposed on a more intense elliptical pattern. The pattern given by reoriented cotton is roughly a narrow streak. Delignified jute gives a somewhat shaving-brush-shaped pattern which changes to a uniformly wide streak on alkali treatment. (3) The extent of scattering decreases on swelling and increases on stretching in jute, ramie, and cotton, but decreases in stretched coir.

Description / Table of Contents: A new weldable ultra high strength steelThe paper deals with a new maraging steel containing 18% Ni, 7% Co, and 5% Mo.The material can easily be machined and formed in the annealed martensitic condition and welded without difficulties. Containing maximum 0,03%C the material is practically free of carbon and requires a simple aging treatment at 480°C in order to achieve its high strength of more than 180 kp/mm2/. The aging treatment leads to precipitation of intermetallic phases. The steel is also weldable in the maraged condition. In order to achieve a strength efficiency of 0,95 in the weldments, only a repeated aging treatment at 480°C is necessary.

Description / Table of Contents: Technological properties and corrosion behaviour of a titanium alloy with 0.2 per cent. palladiumWorking melts of a titanium alloy with 0.2 per cent. palladium have been investigated in respect of their technological and physical properties. With a view to chemical resistance, the homogeneity of working melts and their corrosion behaviour in numerous corrosives, with welded and non-welded samples, are described and compared with un-alloyed titanium. Heat treatment and processing conditions are discussed. The titanium alloy with approx. 0.2 per cent. palladium shows, in working melts of up to 3000 kgs, the same technological, physical and processing properties as non-alloyed titanium of corresponding strength. As far as corrosion behaviour is concerned, the alloy while showing the same resistance in the oxidation zone, has a much better performance than non-alloyed titanium in the reduction zone.

Description / Table of Contents: Relationships between natural microbial corrosion and fungus tests in the laboratoryOn the basis of the critical values of relative humidity and temperature, published by the different metereological stations throughout the world, the surface of the earth has been divided into four regions with different degrees of risk of microbial corrosion. For these regions a laboratory type fungus test with different cycles (phases) has been specified. Apart from the analysis of metereological data, the test specifications have also been based on the results of long-term atmospheric mould fungus tests carried out at different places characteristic for the regions thus classified.

Description / Table of Contents: The corrosion resistance of high grade metal alloys in solutions containing rhodanideCorrosion tests with solutions containing rhodanide of different composition have been undertaken to determine the diminution coefficients of fine gold and of the alloy Degulor i, Degulor M, Duallor K and a 20 carat gold alloy. The results of these tests were as follows: 1. Pure rhodanide solutions do not attack high grade metal alloys. 2. Pure solutions of potassium peroxy-disulphate give rise to notable corrosion. 3. The corrosion caused by peroxy-disulphate is greatly reduced by phosphate. 4. If a solution consisting of a mixture of peroxy-disulphate and phosphate also contains rhodanide, the protective effect of the phosphate is almost wholly obviated. The magnitude of the diminution shows that it is mainly the alloys containing copper and silver which are exposed to the corrosion attack of the rhodanide. 5. If, to a mixture of peroxy-disulphate, phosphate and rhodanide, one also adds citric acid, the diminution is further reduced. There is however, no direct proportionality between the reduction in diminution and the increase in the citric acid concentration. 6. A change in the concentration of the hydrogen ions has no considerable effect on the diminution of a buffer mixture of phosphate and citric acid containing rhodanide and peroxy-disulphate.

Description / Table of Contents: The significance of corrosion testing methods, with special reference to the SO2 test in accordance with the German Standard Specifications DIN 50018It is shown that differently alloyed steels are subject to relatively strong corrosion even in pure condensed water containing no SO2 In condensed water with SO2 content as defined in DIN 50018, steel corrosion increases, and metals such as Cd, Ni and Zn are, in an atmosphere containing SO 2 equally strongly corroded as low-alloyed steels. In this respect, cadmium shows much poorer results than zinc and nickel, whilst tin, aluminium and copper show much better results. With the aluminium specimens, a clear relationship can be detected between the strength values and the degree of corrosion.

Description / Table of Contents: Relationships between appropriate mechanical stresses and structural shape, exemplified by multi-jacket pressure tanksThe mechanism of multi-jacket systems has been subjected to closer investigation by means of a burst test carried out on an artificially aged two-jacket steel ball of 1 metre diameter. Before bursting, the ball showed several incipient cracks which, with a single-jacket tank exposed to similar stresses, would undoubtedly have caused bursting. In the event, bursting under hydraulic pressure could only be achieved after the separation of the jackets had been obviated by the application of buildup welding at a critical point. From the pattern of the fracture, it was possible to conjecture the course of the fracture and to demonstrate the extremely great increase in the safety margin due to the physical separation of the individual shells. This even applies if the juxtaposition of the shells prior to the hydraulic expansion had been relatively poor.

Description / Table of Contents: The question of passivity with nickel in acid solutionThe electro-chemical behaviour of nickel during passivation in the ph range from 0 to 4 has been investigated on the basis of chemical-thermodynamic data and the electrode reactions at the system nickel aqueous solution. The electro-chemical affinity (A) values, as a function of the anodic and cathodic overpotentials δU, platted in an A( δU) diagram, yield thermodynamic anodic and cathodic curves from which the position of the Flade overpotential and the composition of the cover layer can be ascertained. The dissolution mechanism and the formation of the passive layer of nickel in acid solution can be explained by the overall reaction Ni3O4 + H+ ⇄ Ni2O3 + Ni2+ + OH- which has the basic reference potential UH = + 0,38 V. The Flade reference potential in neutral and alkaline solution is governed by the relationship UH,F = + 0,42 + -0,059 pH.In this connection a difference between the PH relationship of the flade reference potential and of the overall reaction at passive nickel has been taken into account.

Description / Table of Contents: A synospis of the sphere of stress cracking corrosion. Part I. The importance of stress corrosion cracking in industrial practiceIn the present First Part, the importance of stress corrosion cracking phenomena is discussed. In a historic survey, a description is given of the damage caused by stress corrosion cracking to metallic materials in greatly variegated technical spheres. The cases of damage or less grave in nature but also, in a number of cases, certain categories of damage which occured unexpectedly in the course of technical development, and which had to be overcome first before technical progress could be resumed. Problems of stress corrosion cracking are also highly topical in the sphere of the pioneering efforts characteristic for our times which, e.g., call for the application of high-strength steels. The second will deal with the character of stress corrosion cracking in the light of the latest knowledge.
Notes: Im 1.

Description / Table of Contents: Prevention of stress corrosion cracking through blasting with steel shot, glass pearls and electro-corundumMechanical blasting may represent an effective remedy to the danger of stress corrosion cracking. This was the authors' conclusion from stress corrosion tests with welded specimens of austenitic steel X 10 CrNiTi 18 9 and ferritic steel St 37 which had been blasted with different agents, varying the blasting pressure (from 3 to 6 kg/cm2/) and the exposure time (from 15 to 120 seconds pr. 100 sq. cm or so). To obtain a sufficient compensation of the dangerous internal tensile stresses due to welding, the blasting pressure should be as high as with normal surface protection (approx. 6 kg/cm2/), but a longer exposure time must be chosen.

Description / Table of Contents: Investigations into the effect of ferrous (II) sulphate on atmospheric corrosion and sub-surface corrosion of coats of paints. - Part IUp to now, there have been no satisfactory explanations of all the details of certain phenomena well known to the corrosion protection expert, such as as the granular nature of atmospheric rust (rust “pimples” or “warts”), uneven effect of atmospheric corrosion on the iron surface, the pimple-shaped corrosion and pit-shaped corrosion of coats of paints.A satisfactory explanation has been found on the basis of the experimental detection of ferrous (II) sulphate concentrations in the rust, in connection with the research work carried out by G. Schikorr and J.E.O. Mayne. The consequences in respect of the derusting methods normally used in practise are discussed. The theoretical interpretation of the ferrous (II) sulphate concentrations will be the subject of a second publication.

Description / Table of Contents: Theoretical interpretation of the ferrous(II) sulphate concentrations in atmospheric rust-part IIIn an earlier article, the effect of point-shaped concentrations of ferrous(II) sulphate on atmospheric corrosion was described. The electro-chemical mechanism of these ferrous (II) sulphate concentrations can only be indicated in broad outline, since atmospheric corrosion has so far been the subject of surprisingly few publications supported by experimental research. On the basis of a schematic presentation of such a concentration, the phenomena at the anode and cathode and the resulting condition of the electronconductivity of the iron oxides concerned are discussed. The discussion then extends extends to the initial phase, the growth phenomena, the stability factors and the relationship with previous theories on atmospheric corrosion.Reference is made to publications on the composition of the rust, its redox function, and certain iron oxide hydroxides which have an important bearing on the theory of these concentrations.

Description / Table of Contents: Application of the multi-component spray method to the insulation coating of concrete and steel in the chemical industryGlass fibre reinforced synthetic resins were originally used for the manufacture of moulds of all types and, to a large extent, also for the construction of chemical equipment. Because of their excellent properties in regard to mechanical strength and resistance to many aggressive media, it was not surprising that the attempt was also made to use these materials as a protective coating for concrete and other building material one which did not permit the coating of concrete etc. with glass fibre reinforced synthetic resins on a economic basic. This situation was changed by the development of the fibre resin spray method which took place more or less simultaneously in the USA and in Germany. The method first met with unexpected difficulties which could only be overcome by close collaboration between a resin manufacture, a building contractor and a company manufacturing spraying equipment. Special resins and spraying machines as well as a special technology were developed, and special attention was paid to the pretreatment of the base to be coated and to the sealing of the basic resin coat.

Description / Table of Contents: A synopsis of the sphere of stress cracking corrosion. Part II. Consideration of a fundamental nature on the problem of stress corrosion crackingFollowing a critical survey of the term “stress corrosion cracking” the phenomenology of this type of corrosion is characterized in order to distinguish it from similar phenomena as e.g. damage caused by diffusing hydrogen, attack by high pressure hydrogen at elevated temperature and cracking due to soldering. The author further delinetaes the conditions necessary for the formation of stress corrosion cracking, and shows the individual steps of this deteriovation process. Some points are emphasized from among the comprehensive group of problems associated with stress corrosion cracking; these points illustrate the mechanism of stress corrosion cracking as well as the vast number of factors influencing this type of corrosion. The transcrystalline form is regarded as a particularly characteristic features of stress corrosion cracking. The latest state of attempts at elucidating these phenomena is discussed, with particular reference to studies on austenitic steels. It is shown that the cooperation of physical effects is probable; in this context particular reference is made to the stress corrosion cracking of plastic polymers. On the basis of the criterion involving the selection of spots susceptible to stress corrosion cracking in the material and specfic aggressive media the question is raised where there are open gaps in the theoretical explanation. Finally the necessity of further research is pointed out and an appeal is made to all those concerned to make available and collect the results of practical experience in a more systematic way than before.

Description / Table of Contents: New stainless steels for chemical equipmentBy alloying stainless austenitic chrome-nickel (-molybdenum ) steels of low car-bon content with nitrogen, the strength properties are enhanced without detriment to ductility. In the construction of plant and pressure tanks, this gives rise to certain advantages in respect of thinner walls and savings in weight.Processing corresponds to that applied to other steels. The new steels can be welded with identical filler metal by any electric method without suffering hot cracks. The bead is free from δ ferrite. The corrosion resistance of steels with nitrogen corresponds to that if normal steels. In the welded condition, the corrosion resistance is higher than with the use of stabilised steels.

Description / Table of Contents: Molybdenum di-silicide, a high-temperature material for extreme chemical and thermal stressesThe material known as MoSi2, which can be shaped by powder-metallurgical methods, is resistant to acids, diluted lyes, salt solutions and various salt melts. It is, moreover, distinguished from other metals and alloys by its excellent corrosion resistance to reducing as well as oxidising gases at temperatures from 1350 to 700°CBecause of these properties, MoSi2 is used as ageproof heat conductor in continuous as well as discontinuous operation. It is also beginning to be used as a structural material in the chemical and electrical industries as well as in the glass and ceramics industries.

Description / Table of Contents: A relationship between corrosion protection effect and compressibility of high-polymer compoundsA relationship has been established between the protective ability of high polymers spread upon surfaces of iron and the compressibility of the same monolayers on a water surfaces. The protection varies inversely with the square root of the compressibility. High polymers with a network from clathrates with crystalloid compounds of suitable size. It is shown that the protecting effect of the clathrates is higher and correspondingly that their compressibility is lower than that of the polymers alone. This is attributed to a “sealing” of the polymer mesh by the enclosed compounds.

Description / Table of Contents: The influence of dynamic bending stresses on the formation of the fatigue fracture surface and the rate of crack formation with iron casting materials containing carbonThe present contribution deals with some of the results of fatigue bending tests on grey cast iron, perlitic and ferritic ball graphite castings and while malleable cast iron.Tests were carried out on large-size round irons of 70mm dia. and square bars of 50·60 mm within the pulsating stress range, and on normal specimens of 20 mm dia. within the alternating stress range, in order to determine the influence of a defined rates stress σN, of the type of structure, and of the shape of the specimen on the rate of crack as a function of the crack progress (sector angles with round bar specimens; depth of crack with crack with square bar specimens). The influence of different rated stress was detectable in the rate of crack formation as well as in the effects of the crack front on the fatigue fracture surface. At a crack formation rate of ≤r≤1.5·10-5 MM/Cycle, the fatigue fracture zone of graphite and malleable cast iron specimens shows oxidation zones. The advance rate of the crack front in the specimen with incipient crack was recorded by electric resistance measurement and ultrasonic equipments; the shape and position of the residual fracture zone was with grey cast iron, determined by means of penetrating agents.

Description / Table of Contents: Potential distribution in ships cathodically protected by impressed currentThe potentiel distribution across the cathodic acreas is investigated with a view to optimizing the cathodic protection; for this purpose tow model arrangements are sued: individual arrangement or periodical array of circular anodes upon a square insulating shield in the cathode plane which was subdivided into squares. For the case of point-shaped anodes the mathematical treatment yields terms enabling the numerical evaluation by series techniques of the particular geometry factor as a function of the width of the insulating shield. the relations thus found can be used to determine the insulation shield width for a given cathode area (individual anode) or a given anode distance (periodical array). Another term represents the potential decay across the insulating shield and the cathode as a function of anode geometry and anode diameter (circular disks). Testing of the relation thus derived, using models in a flow channel, has resulted in satisfactory agreement - within the experimental error - between calculated and experimental results.

Description / Table of Contents: Thermal decomposition of polytetrafluoroethyleneGliding friction PTFE on metal surfaces may produce local temperature increases sufficient for giving rise to decomposition of the thermoplastic material. This process is enhanced by the poor thermal conductance of the plastic material. It is further aggravated by some metals, in particular iron, chromium and their alloys. The decomposition products may have corrosive effects upon various metals. This fact may serve as an explanation of the weight loss incurred by steel if PTFE is gliding on its surface. Such losses amy be prevented in the case of steel by nickel-plating the gliding surfaces.

Description / Table of Contents: Investigations into iron corrosion caused by bacteriaObservations on steel profiles which had been submersed for four years in the harbour water at Bremerhaven revealed a typical case of bacterial corrosion. Bacterial cultures obtained form the corrosion product gave rise, after four weeks of application to steel samples, to marked corrosion. It was possible to trace the corrosive effect to two groups of bacteria, viz. sulphate reducing bacteria with a corrosion effect about 1½ times as great as that of the steriale reference specimens, andH2 and CO2-forming bacteria with a corrosion effect anout 10 to 15 times greater than that of the sterile reference specimes.Comparable results were obtained with Hildenborough strain NCIB 8303, Desulfovibrio desulfuricans, a typical sulphate reducer, and with Escherichia coli strain, Berlin Hygienic Institute, a typical H2 and CO2 former. According to the investigations, the type of bacteria encountered with the corrosion depends decisively on the composition of the medium.

Description / Table of Contents: Action mechanism of gelatines inhibiting the corrosion of brass in citric acid, investigated by measuring potentials and polarisationThe corrosion of brass (Cu-Zn67/33) in 0.2 n citric acid is greatly reduced by gelatines. The equilibrium rest potential is shifted, after the addition of gelatines, to less positives values (+ 217 mV in solution without gelatine, + 180 mV with 0.2 per cent. gelatine). The cathodic polarisation which is very high compared with the anodic polarisation, or rather the steep rise of the cathodic polarisation, indicates cathodically controlled inhibition. The degree of inhibition calculated from the loss in weight (38 per cent. with 0.2 per cent. gelatine) agrees will with the value obtained from the exchange current densities (37 per cent.). As the exchange current density is reduced by the addition of the inhibitor, it must be assumed that the inhibitor is adsorbed in the cathodic zones. This opinion is supported by the fact that, if the corrosion potential is plotted as a function of the inhibitor concentration, the curve thus obtained is similar to Langmuir's adsorption isotherm.
