    Notes: Batch/semicontinuous chemical plants are usually designed either by assuming infinite intermediate storage or by assuming that the units themselves act as storage vessels, while the storage vessels are sized by rules of thumb or experience. In this paper, the case of an intermediate storage vessel which links one upstream batch/semicontinuous unit to one downstream batch/semicontinuous unit is analyzed. The units are assumed to operate with fixed cycle times and capacities. Expressions for determining the minimum storage tank capacity necessary to decouple the two units are derived from a mathematical model of the periodic process. Effects of the relative starting times of the two units on the required storage capacity are determined, thus suggesting the optimum process timings to minimize the same. Application of the results is illustrated by an example.

    Notes: Porous solids have been simulated in the computer as assemblages of spheres. When such assemblages contain spheres distributed in size and randomly arranged in space, the structure of the resulting solid resembles that of a real porous solid. Monte Carlo calculations of gas molecule trajectories through the assemblages were carried out for both the Knudsen and ordinary diffusion régimes. Tortuosities calculated from the simulated diffusion “data” fell in the range obtained experimentally by other investigators. Correlations were obtained that enable the prediction of diffusion rates from measurement of the porosity, mean pore size, and standard deviation of the pore size.

    Notes: The mixed oxide system of copper and tin and the active single oxide, Cu2O, were compared for reducibility of the copper ion, relative number and type of active sites, and reaction kinetics. The enhanced selectivity of the mixed oxides may result from the formation of highly selective sites at the expense of less selective sites. The reducibility of the copper ion in the mixture is influenced by the oxidation state of the tin ion. The reactant and product reaction orders are the same for both catalysts but the mixed oxides are more sensitive to inhibition by water. The catalyst composition affects the energetics of the reaction over the copper-tin oxide catalysts.

    Notes: Heat transfer to a gas-solids suspension flowing cocurrently downward in a 13-mm inside diameter tube with uniform heat-flux boundary conditions was investigated using 329-μm spherical glass beads in air. The gas Reynolds number varied from 0 to 30,000 with solids-loading ratios of up to 20 at a gas Reynolds number of 10,000. The suspension Nusselt number, defined in terms of the wall-to-gas mixed-mean temperature difference, decreased with increasing solids-loading ratio at high Reynolds numbers, while it changed little from the value for gas alone at low Reynolds numbers. A possible explanation is given by considering the effects of particles on the fluid mechanical properties of the gas. Asymptotic Nusselt numbers in downflow are compared with results of other investigations for upflow.

    Notes: The effect of the ratio of solute molecular diameter to the substrate pore diameter on the diffusion of polyaromatic compounds in four different pore sizes of amorphous gamma-aluminas was studied at atmospheric pressure and ambient temperature. Diffusion rates of the polyaromatic compounds in the aluminas decreased as the ratio of solute molecular diameter to pore diameter increased. Empirical correlations between the apparent reduction in solute effective diffusivity and the ratio of molecular diameter to pore diameter were obtained.

    Notes: One of the factors which reduces combustion efficiency in a fluidized-bed combustor is the elutriation of fine coal particles from the freeboard above the bed surface. To our knowledge, data about the real local flow behavior of the two-phase flow in the freeboard are lacking in the literature. This paper concerns the measurement of the gas and the elutriated particle velocities in the freeboard of a cold fluidized bed using Laser Doppler Anemometry. A special electronic system has been devised to record simultaneously the gas and particle velocities and to indicate the size of the particles. In this paper the apparatus and some preliminary measurements are reported. The most significant observation is that the gas velocity profiles exhibit minima near the bed center and maxima near the walls.

    Notes: Kynch's theories of sedimentation are reinterpreted, modified, and extended to be valid for batch sedimentation in which a zone of compacting sediment forms at the bottom of the column. The development has several steps: First, it is shown that a concentration discontinuity, any part of whose chord plots above the curve on a Kynch plot of settling flux vs. particle concentration, will be unstable and immediately give rise to a different concentration distribution. From this it is deduced that Kynch characteristics, or loci of constant concentration, must propagate either from the origin of a height vs. time plot, or tangentially from the locus of the compression or suspension-sediment discontinuity. A Kynch-like construction is derived to relate the settling rate at the top of the suspension (measured by its subsidence rate) to the concentration arriving at the surface at that time. It makes use of two tangents, one to the settling curve (as in Kynch), and another to the locus of the compression discontinuity. Finally a construction, analagous to that of Talmage and Fitch, is deduced for determining required thickener area.

    Notes: A pore-diffusion model is developed for temperature swing separation in a packed bed of sorbent. The model is applied to interpret experimental data for separation of H2 of CH4 in a packed bed of activated carbon operated in the temperature swing mode, at pressures up to 5.52 MPa. Experimental results on the effects of total pressure, particle size, adsorption temperature, and flow rate on separation efficiency compared favorably to the model predictions. The importance of pore diffusion in separation has been clearly demonstrated.

    Notes: Flow rate measurements in a steady-state process are reconciled by weighted least squares so that the conservation laws are obeyed. A projection matrix is constructed which can be used to decompose the linear problem into the solution of two subproblems, by first removing each balance around process units with an unmeasured component flow rate. The remaining measured flow rates are reconciled, and the unmeasured flow rates can then be obtained from the solution of the conservation equations. The basic case contains constraints which are linear in the component and the total flow rates. The method is extended to cases with bilinear constraints, involving unknown parameters such as split fractions.Chi-square and normal statistics are used to test for overall gross measurement errors, for gross error in each node imbalance which is fully measured, and for each measurement adjustment.

    Notes: Hollow-fiber device has been used to investigate the effect of ultrafiltration swing on the performance of membrane-enzyme reactor. Experiments with β-galactosidase and ONPG have shown that bidirectional ultrafiltration induced by pulsatile flow gives rise to an increase in conversion relative to that obtained at steady operation without ultrafiltration swing. This increase apparently comes from the enhanced mass transfer due to ultrafiltration.

    Notes: A series of high-pressure pneumatic dense-phase flow experiments were conducted using pulverized coal as the granular solids. This granular material was transported by nitrogen gas out of a conical feeder tank, through a length of stainless-steel tubing and into a pressurized receiver tank. Only the nitrogen gas trapped in the interstices of the coal particles inside the feeder tank was used to transport the coal. Six different transport stainless-steel tube geometries were used. A detailed analysis of the system is performed. This analysis reasonably predicts the expected solids flow rate for a given set of operating conditions and the minimum pressure drop required to maintain flow.

    Notes: Matched asymptotic solutions are given for the temperature profiles and heat transfer rates in laminar three-dimensional flows with viscous dissipation. The results are asymptotically valid for small thermal diffusivity α; they hold for Newtonian or non-Newtonian fluids. The fluid properties are evaluated at an average temperature for the system; this is satisfactory for moderate temperature differences. Heat transfer formulas for various thermal boundary conditions are included. Several examples are analyzed, including the frictional heating of a polymer melt in flow through a wire-coating die.

    Notes: This paper investigates the separating efficiency of a vertical water elutriator operating on particle mixtures. In particular, comparisons are made with a previously developed mathematical model based on an eddy diffusion mechanism of mixing. Standard mixtures of glass spheres, of uniform size and shape, are used to study the equipment characteristics. It is found that the separating efficiency follows the same trend as predicted by the model and that “wall flow” of particles occurs. This affects the required water velocity, resulting in the equipment producing a top product generally purer than the bottom product.

    Notes: A one-dimensional model has been developed to account for the physicochemical processes occurring inside a burning wet coal surface. The model considers the vaporization of coal moisture and the existence of a moving evaporation front, pyrolysis and char/gas reactions in the hot zone, molecular diffusion and Darcy flow through the dry porous coal, transpiration cooling effect of the water vapor and pyrolysis gases, temperature-dependent reaction kinetics and coal thermal conductivity, and variable porousity of the coal due to pyrolysis and char/gas reactions.The model and associated assumptions have been verified with experimental data from the combustion and drying of coal. The results also show that the model prediction of the heat transferred from the coal surface into the coal is much higher than that calculated by the simple heat conduction equation.The fraction of the water in the coal that reacts with char is shown as a function of the linear burn velocity and the surface temperature. In addition, the effect of variations in coal moisture and the thermal conductivity on the thickness of the dry zone are also shwon.

    Notes: Used catalyst and reactor deposits from a fixed-bed coal liquefaction unit show high concentrations of titanium and boron. The titanium was present as anatase, a titania polymorph. Hydrogenation reactions with and without catalyst were performed with model titanium and boron compounds under liquefaction conditions. The catalyst used was Harshaw 0402T 3% CoO - 15% MoO3 on an alumina-silica support. Rutile remained unchanged by reactor conditions. In all other runs the titanium starting material, whether organic or inorganic in nature, converted to anatase. When the deposition of the reaction products was monitored, only that anatase derived from organic titanium compounds accumulated on and in the catalyst pellets to an appreciable extent.

    Notes: The rise velocities of bubbles, slugs and pressure waves in a fluidized bed have been measured on-line through the use of pressure transducers coupled with the cross-correlation technique. Sand and glass beads with different particle sizes were tested. Effects of the gas flow rate and column diameter on the rise velocities of bubbles and slugs were investigated. The results were correlated with two models developed in this work and were compared with the data obtained by other investigators.

    Notes: The basic characteristics of a transferred arc argon plasma were determined using a cathode assembly suitable for transferring the electric arc to a molten metal bath or to a cooled anode. They indicated that the sustained voltage depended strongly on the arc length and much less on current. The inlet gas velocity past the cathode tip was determined to be an important operating parameter, rather than the volumetric gas flowrate.The measurement of the axial and radial profiles of temperature was effected with ±8% accuracy by a novel diagnostic technique. Temperatures up to 18,500 K were observed on the axis of the plasma column, near the cathode tip, and decayed in both radial and axial directions. A sweeping microprobe was used to measure the axial and radial profiles of velocity. Velocities up to 190 m/s were recorded. The presence of a relatively colder flow surrounding the plasma column was detected. Mass and energy balances performed by taking this flow into account agreed with the measured input rates.

    Notes: By considering reaction and diffusion through a product layer and concomitant movement of pore and reaction surfaces, a general rate equation is derived for fluid-solid reactions. Application to the random pore model extends the prior results (Bhatia and Perlmutter, 1980, 1981a) to account for nonlinear concentration gradients in the product layer, by assuming that the product is deposited as overlapping cylindrical annulae. For the Petersen (1957) model, new results are derived which account for product layer diffusion. A comparison of numerical conversion-time predictions from the grain model (Szekely et al., 1976), the Petersen model, and the random pore models suggests that they are more strongly affected by the representation of the reaction surface than by that of the pore surface. The model is applied to the data of Borgwardt (1970) on the SO2-lime reaction, and the results are compared with a previous interpretation using a linear concentration gradient approximation.

    Notes: The four environment model, which was developed in Part I, has been compared with three extensive sets of experimental data from plug-flow and stirred-tank reactors with unmixed feedstreams and a single chemical reaction. The data sets have been accurately reproduced with a single value of the micromixing parameter (RS), and the “best fit” value of RS for each data set was close to the value estimated from the Corrsin-Rosensweig turbulent mixing theory. This lends support to the turbulence analogy suggested in Part I. Simulations of competing reactions of the parallel-consecutive type are used to discriminate between the four and three environment models with the four environment model providing much more realistic predictions.

    Notes: Atmospheric fluidized-bed combustors (AFBC) operate in the large-particle (〉1 mm) fluidization regime. Characteristics of this regime, combined with the fact that as much as 50% of the coal combustibles are volatiles, result in localization of the devolatilization and combustion of the volatilized gases to the neighborhood of the coal-particle and volatile gas plumes arising from the injector region. The volatile gas plume resulting from the large-particle fluidization dynamics wanders due to pressure fluctuations induced by bubble passage.The purpose of the present work is to determine the impact of these characteristics on the design of AFBC's. This has been accomplished by a linearized analysis of the governing equations to describe the periodic wandering of the volatiles plume diffusion flame and the corresponding fluctuation of the combustion rate. The flame oscillation increases the overall combustion rate above the steady-state value. This increase diminishes with increasing fluctuation frequency until the flame becomes insensitive to the fluctuation in the high frequency limit.

    Notes: A rigorous mathematical formulation is presented for the problem of optimal design under uncertainty. This formulation involves a nonlinear infinite programming problem in which an optimization is performed on the set of design and control variables, such that the inequality constraints of the chemical plant are satisfied for every parameter value that belongs to a specified polyhedral region. To circumvent the problem of infinite dimensionality in the constraints, an equivalence for the feasibility condition is established which leads to a max-min-max constraint. It is shown that if the inequalities are convex, only the vertices in the polyhedron need to be considered to satisfy this constraint. Based on this feature, an algorithm is proposed which uses only a small subset of the vertices in an iterative multiperiod design formulation. Examples are presented to illustrate the application to flexible design problems.

    Notes: A laboratory study was conducted to determine the factors influencing the dispersion of oil with a turbine mixer. Drop-size distributions as a function of time were related to the impeller diameter, power expended in relation to the liquid volume, and the final emulsion temperature.It was surprising that higher temperatures produced smaller mean drop diameters but at the expense of a wider distribution. An optimal batch size for the emulsion was found to exist in processing. Below this size, tank surface and internal turbulence waste much of the energy; above this size, the energy per unit volume became a critical factor.Other trials were made to determine the effect of the turbulence of the tank surface, tank geometry, number of impeller blades, and turbine configuration. These all significantly affect drop size and should be considered in the design and selection of dispersing equipment.

    Notes: Sorption of vapors in polymer membranes in the vicinity of and below the glass transition temperatures do not follow the Fickian (classical) diffusion. The reasons have been attributed to the molecular relaxation which affects both diffusivities and solubilities.A time- and memory-dependent diffusion coefficient has been evaluated in Part I, in a form which is analogous to the treatment in the rheology of such materials. Together with a time-dependent solubility, the conservation equation for the sorption process has been solved. Two special cases are considered, where the relaxation times are short and where they are long. The results explain the anomalous behavior observed in the experiments. Comparison with the experiments has been made.

    Notes: This paper reports an experimental study of the multivariable control of a pilot-plant distillation column having a side stream as well as overhead and bottom products. A recently developed multivariable controller for systems having multiple time delays is implemented for the first time on an experimental process. The controller consists of a new multivariable time delay compensator coupled with traditional PI controllers. Realization is accomplished with a PDP 11 minicomputer. Improved system performance was observed with the delay compensator, especially in disturbance rejection.

    Notes: A new membrane enzyme reactor system is proposed, and its performance is analytically and numerically examined by operational modes. This membrane-separated, two-compartmental reactor is operated in a cyclic manner such that ultrafiltration swing is induced either by a pulsatile flow or by an alternating pressure difference. Substrate and product solutins are permeable to the membrane while enzyme is impermeable. In one reservoir, enzyme solution is stored into which substrate is supplied by diffusion-coupled ultrafiltration and product is removed by the same mechanism into the substrate compartment, which is similar to CSTR in view of fluid mixing and continuous inlet-outlet flows, but differs from CSTR in a sense that reaction takes place only in the enzyme compartment.The governing model equations are derived and their analytical solutions are obtained for fast reaction and high ultrafiltration with first-order kinetics. In addition, nonlinear Michaelis-Menten kinetics problem is solved numerically. As a result, we have found that the system can increase the conversion substantially compared with previous diffusion-moderated enzyme reactors where diffusion very often can limit the extent of conversion.

    Notes: A new method for approximating quantities that involve physical properties derivatives in equation-oriented process design is presented. It is a hybrid algorithm that makes combined use of Newton's method and the Schubert update. In doing so, available analytical derivative information is used in an optimal way.This hybrid algorithm is surprisingly close, in terms of the number of iterations required for solution, to an implementation of Newton's method that uses finite difference approximations of any unavailable physical properties derivatives. However, the number of rigorous thermodynamics calculations is usually about 50% fewer for the hybrid method. This can result in a substantial savings for problems in which the physical properties calculations dominate the simulation time. Two examples are presented to support these claims.

    Notes: The general problem of heat and power integration in process networks is complex and to date not fully understood. The subject covers site combined heat and power, on-plant power generation, heat pumps, and refrigeration systems. This paper is the first of a two-part series and explains the concept of “appropriate” heat engine and heat pump placement in process networks based on a fundamental new insight. “Appropriate” placement takes advantage of integration opportunities with the remainder of the process and yields marginal efficiencies far greater than could be achieved through stand-alone heat engines. Conversely, “inappropriate” placement can never offer an advantage over stand-alone systems. Part II describes procedures for preliminary design, involving heat engine, and heat pump equipment selection and performance assessment.

This work is aimed at developing a quick estimation strategy by means of process discretization and evaluating errors engendered by the strategy.     Notes: The computer implementation and experimental verification of the practical model for high-gradient magnetic separation (HGMS) based on particle buildup and feed characteristic, developed in Part II, are described. It is shown that the new model can be used to satisfactorily predict the grade, recovery and concentration breakthrough observed in pilot-scale experimental studies of HGMS for the removal of sulfur and ash from water slurries of several pulverized Eastern coals. The experimentally verified model can be used to quantitatively identify the tradeoff of separation variables so as to optimize the magnetic removal of sulfur and ash from pulverized coal. The model can also be used to assess the technical and economical feasibility of the magnetic beneficiation of pulverized coal without extensive experimental tests.

    Notes: The reaction kinetics and physical transport processes governing the thermal dehydration of solid K2CO3·3/2H2O particles were investigated. Isothermal reaction rate data were gathered using a thermogravimetric balance in which narrowly-sized K2CO3·3/2H2O crystals were dehydrated under a water vapor atmosphere at different pressures and temperatures. The magnitudes of the heat and mass transfer resistances external to and within the solid product were estimated from solutions of the relevant pseudosteady-state transport equations. In the temperature range 320 to 358 K, the vacuum dehydration of K2CO3·3/2H2O crystals smaller than 710 μm (-25 +30 mesh) are accurately modeled by the spherical shrinking-core equation for the chemical rate control regime. In the presence of water vapor, external heat transfer to the particles was sufficient to prevent significant self-cooling; heat and mass transfer resistances within the particles were negligible. The activation energy for K2CO3·3/2H2O dehydration is approximately 91 kJ/mol in vacuum; the reaction becomes extremely slow at relative pressures (P/Peq) 〉 0.35.

    Notes: An equation for the volume average fluid velocity in a boundary layer region between a fluid and a porous medium is derived. The result is valid for a general anisotropic porous medium subject to the restrictions imposed by the assumptions made in the analysis. The basic equations of motion for an incompressible Newtonian fluid with negligible inertia are used and a linear map Mij from the volume average velocity 〈v〉 into the point velocity v is assumed to exist. Using scaling arguments, an equation for 〈v〉 is found which reduces to the Darcy equation for a point entirely within the porous medium below the boundary region and to the usual Navier-Stokes equation for a point entirely within the fluid above the boundary region. The form of the equation contains two of the terms that were originally hypothesized and tested experimentally by Beavers and Joseph (1967).     Notes: Experimental results are reported for the partial pressure of ammonia in water solutions containing low concentrations of phenol. Experiments were performed in 0.6 molal phenol at 100 and 150°C. Results at 150°C indicate that the very small effect of phenol on the partial pressure of ammonia is within the limit of experimental error, 3%, and therefore could not be established from the data. However, at 100°C, the partial pressure of ammonia was decreased by nearly 10%. Computer program TIDES - a computerized thermodynamic framework for calculating vapor-liquid equilibria for volatile weak electrolytes and other common gases - has been revised to account for the effect of low concentrations of phenol.

    Notes: A principal mechanism for rapid mixing and fragmentation in vapor explosions, such as have occurred in the LNG, aluminum, steel and paper industries, is thought to be nonlinear Taylor instability. An analysis, based on a generalized coordinate method developed by Dienes for a fluid with an arbitrary constitutive law, is here extended to a two-fluid model, with or without mass transfer between the fluids. Numerical results indicate that in a steam-water system entrainment starts in times of order 10-4s at 100 G acceleration normal to the interface. For gas-liquid systems the presence of the second fluid changes the instability growth only slightly. Condensation of steam, even when limited only by the kinetic theory interfacial resistance, also has minor effects on the growth rate. However, condensation on the entrained drops will have a major effect on the acceleration.

    Notes: A model for the liquid-phase residence time in a trickle-flow reactor has been derived and experimentally verified using a tracer input. The model, termed the Ideal Plug Flow Stagnancy Model, postulates that the prime liquid-phase dispersive mechanism in such reactors is the interchange between the dynamic and stagnant regions. Unlike previous models, however, it does not require the assumption of perfect mixing in the stagnant zones. While the results of the study confirm that the mixing is incomplete, they show clearly that back mixing rather than molecular diffusion is the dominant exchange mechanism.

    Notes: The kinetics of reaction between CO2 and lime is investigated in the range of 673 to 998 K with a view to examining the effects of product layer deposition and variations in the limestone calcination atmosphere. The reaction is initially rapid and chemically controlled and goes through a sudden transition to a much slower regime controlled by diffusion in the product CaCO3 layer. The magnitude of the estimated product layer diffusivity is in the range of 10-18 to 10-21 m2/s, the corresponding activation energy is 88.9 ± 3.7 kJ/mol below 688 K and 179.2 ± 7.0 kJ/mol above that temperature, suggestive of solid state diffusion. Plausible mechanisms are discussed.

    Notes: The mechanics of particle motion in a fluidized bed were studied by focusing on the microscopic behavior of the particles. The local displacements of nylon particles fluidized by liquid were measured by the micro-capacitance method, and the resultant time series was analyzed by determining its auto-correlation function and the corresponding power spectrum. This has given rise to a stochastic or statistical model of particle displacements in the fluidized bed. This model visualizes the particle motion in a fluidized bed to consist of the random movement, generating irregular signals, and the linear movement, generating wave-like signals.

The correlation requires a knowledge of the critical temperature, critical pressure and acentric factor of the compounds for the prediction of third virial coefficients in the absence of experimental data. The use of the correlation for mixtures of nonpolar gases, including quantum gases, requires one binary parameter for each binary interaction.     Notes: Calorimetry was used to determine the heat of reaction and equilibrium constant at 318 K for the reaction between maleic anhydride (A) and 2-methyl furan (B). The values were -60 kJ/gmol and 614 cm3/gmol, respectively. The motivation for this work was to find a single phase-reacting system that could be used to store solar energy. Thus, the energy storage capacity was calculated for a mixture of A and B, both initially at 7 kmol/m3, in dioxane. The maximum apparent heat capacity of 7.37 J/cm3·K occurred at 334 K. This maximum value is 76% higher than the heat capacity of pure water.

    Notes: With simple hydrodynamic concepts, a physical model is developed to describe the flow at the wall close to the impeller blade. The parameters of this model were evaluated from the large amount of data on power consumption and checked with some independent data on velocity profiles. Together with the physical insight provided by the model, it helped to obtain general relationships for power and heat transfer coefficients. Equations for the latter were developed using Lévêque's approximation. Agreement between the predicted results and the literature data of several independent studies was rather good. A method to analyze mixing or blending results is also suggested.

The model equations, consisting of two coupled, nonlinear partial differential equations, were solved numerically. Experimental data were obtained for the absorption of carbon dioxide into aqueous sodium hydroxide solutions flowing in a wetted wall column under turbulent flow conditions. The experimental mass transfer coefficients agree to within a mean deviation of 10.3% compared to predictions of the theoretical calculations. For this comparison, the rate of surface renewal was obtained from physical absorption experiments, the liquid viscosity and density were measured, and the reaction rate constant and all other physical properties were obtained from the literature. For the experiments the Reynolds number ranged from 1,400 to 5,300 and [OH-]b/[CO2]s varied from 9 to 29.

    Notes: A new flexible method has been developed for modelling multistage multicomponent separation processes. The method is based on the simultaneous modular approach and can be referred to as a quasilinear two-level modelling. The network is solved within each iteration as a linear one, and after each network solution the split streams are updated modularly using nonlinear submodels. The method is suited for modelling the most important separation processes with arbitrary structure and permits to use different models for the subunits or processing units. Illustrative examples and computational results are presented showing the efficiency, flexibility and capability of the method.

    Notes: A continuous flow model is developed which describes flow through a vessel in which the fluid undergoes axial dispersed plug flow and some of the flid is held back in a deadwater zone. The first three moments of the concentration-time curve are related to the three parameters of the model, and an equation is presented to predict the outlet concentration from the vessel as a function of time for an impulse input. The model is used to analyze experimental gas-phase residence-time distribution (RTD) data collected from a small rotary calciner operated at room temperature. These data are well represented by the model.

    Notes: This article analyzes the average residence time distribution of polymer melt across the die width in a common linearly tapered coat-hanger die, which excells the T die but is a little inferior to the curvilinearly tapered coat-hanger die in residence time uniformity according to the approximated calculation of ten used. From another point of view, a linearly tapered coat-hanger die may be designed so that a desired ratio of the residence time through the die far end to that along the die center line may be imposed as one of the design constraints.

    Notes: A theoretical and experimental investigation is presented for filling thin cavities of variable gap thickness. The modeling is based upon a finite-element/finite-difference formulation for an inelastic power-law fluid and includes the effects of viscous heating and conduction upon the flow dynamics. Extensive results are presented for polypropylene and polystyrene melts injected into two variable-gap-thickness cavities, of which one has an insert. Good agreement is found between the predictions and measurements concerning the shape of the advancing melt front, the location of weld lines, and the temporal pressure trace at various positions in the cavity.

The isothermal Newtonian version of the model is implemented using the finite element method, and is capable of handling arbitrary planar geometries. Automated mesh expansion and boundary condition modification allow the simulation to run without operator interaction. The model accurately predicts mold filling pattern for non-Newtonian and non-isothermal flows.

    Notes: Some of today's modern screws contain melt-separating secondary (barrier) flights in the transition zone. With increasing utilization of barrier screws, the availability of proper and accurate design methods for the melting zone remains of paramount importance. A modified version of a mathematical model developed by the authors previously is applied to two most common types of barrier screws, viz. - The Mailefer screw (varying pitch and constant depth); - The Barr screw (constant pitch and varying depth). The present analysis provides valuable insight into the operating principles of these screws. A comparative study is presented demonstrating the possible advantages and disadvantages of the Maillefer and Barr screws in relation to conventional compression screws.

    Notes: Photoresists and solder masks are used extensively for manufacturing printed circuit boards to define and protect the circuits, respectively. These systems exhibit exothermic polymerization and crosslinking reactions upon exposure to UV light or to elevated temperatures. Differential scanning calorimetry (i.e., the heat of reaction) was, therefore, employed to characterize batch-to-batch variations and to characterize the photoreaction in these photosensitive materials. This technique allows unambiguous evaluation of the photoreaction independent of other parameters such as developer reactivity, temperature, and other variables that commonly interfere with functional tests.

    Notes: Prediction of the screw horsepower requirement involves, among many others, the calculation of the shear stress (τs) between the solid polymer and the barrel surface during melting. Prediction of the solid bed down-channel velocity also requires the calculation of τs. However, the pseudoplastic nature and strong temperature dependence of melt viscosity make the mathematics of calculating τs extremely difficult.As a first step of developing a reasonable mathematical model for calculating τs, experimental measurements of τs were made over a wide range of metal temperature and sliding speed for five commercial polymers using molded, block samples. Although dependences of τs on metal temperature and sliding speed were found to have similar functionality to those of the dependences of melt viscosity on melt temperature and shear rate, this study showed that τs could not be expressed as a sole function of the melt rheological properties. Our subsequent study, to be reported in a follow up paper, will show that τs must be expressed as a function of the thermodynamic properties and melt density of the polymer as well as the melt rheological properties and the melting conditions.

    Notes: The notch sensitivity of high-density polyethylene (HDPE), polypropylene (PP), and polybutylene (PB) was evaluated using uniaxial tensile deformation and fractographic analysis. Each polyolefin was tested at relatively low and high molecular weights (MW). Only the lower MW HDPE was found to be clearly notch-sensitive. The lower MW PP exhibited some tendency toward notch sensitivity. The lower and higher MW PB, the higher MW HDPE, and the higher MW PP displayed notch strengthening. Whereas PB showed similar notched tensile performance regardless of molecular weight, both HDPE and PP showed higher susceptibility to notch sensitivity at lower molecular weights (and concomitant higher crystallinity). Tendencies toward notch sensitivity or notch stengthening were evidenced in the failure modes of these materials.

    Notes: In recent years the spinning speeds of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) fiber have increased to the point that significant structural development is being observed in the spun yarn. At even higher speeds significant crystallization has been obtained. Data characterizing these yarns will be presented and discussed showing the development of crystals and that the onset of this phenomena is related to the stress at the “freeze point.” The “freeze point” rises from around Tg at low speeds to the order of 200°C at high speeds. The spinline itself has been characterized by velocity and orientation profiles which show the crystallization process is extremely rapid, occurring over a few centimenters of the spinline.

    Notes: The value of tmax in differential scanning calorimetry is correlated with the crystallization kinetics of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET). The Avrami exponent, n, obtained varies as a result of a change in slope of the curve at the point tn, a secondary crystallization transition. The plot of tn vs. tmax shows a linear relationship. The rate of crystallization depends upon both molecular weight and crystallization temperature. Under a nucleation controlling step, the plot of log tmax vs. \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ t_{\max } vs.\frac{1}{{T^2 \Delta T}} $\end{document}gives a linear relationship. Theoretical concepts of the treatment are discussed.

    Notes: Polypropylene, polystyrene, EP (ethylene/propylene) rubber, and bromobutyl rubber were blended under standardized conditions and the sizes of minor phase domains determined by Quantimet analysis. Dispersion effectiveness was found to depend on the melt viscosities of components under mixing conditions and on their “compatibilty” as inferred here from surface-tension data. Dispersion was optimized when components wet readily at contact surfaces and when melt viscosities were similar. Shear heating during dispersion appeared to offer an empirical index of component compatibilty. Apparent melt viscosities of the blends further reflected the component compatibility factor.
