    Notes: Abstract A 30-year-old AIDS patient with no history of cutaneous eruption, presented with rapidly progressive flaccid paraplegia, hypoesthesia, urinary retention, moderate psychomotor slowing and fever (39.8°C), leading to death within 1 week. CD4 count was 290/mm3. Cerebrospinal fluid contained 210 white blood cells and 238 mg/100 ml protein. Neuropathology revealed HIV encephalitis and diffuse ventriculitis with Cowdry type A inclusions in the ependymal cells. Extensive necrotic and hemorrhagic changes with marked recrotizing vasculitis involved the entire spinal cord and spinal roots. Immunocytochemistry revealed numerous inclusion bodies positive for varicella-zoster virus (VZV) and negative for cytomegalovirus (CMV) and herpes simplex virus type 1 and 2, in ependymal cells, subpial glial cells, endothelial cells and Schwann cells. Electron microscopy confirmed herpes virus-like particles. In situ hybridization confirmed VZV genome in leptomeninges, brain, spinal cord and spinal roots. Comparable neuropathological findings and numerous VZV inclusion bodies were also found in the brain, spinal cord, and spinal roots of a 40-year-old AIDS patient who died from a fulminant ascending myeloradiculopathy previously reported as “necrotizing vasculitis of the nervous system”. Direct infection of the brain by VZV, in AIDS patients, has been shown to cause leukoencephalitis and cerebral non-inflammatory vasculopathies. Our observations demonstrate that, in AIDS patients, VZV infection of the central nervous system may also be responsible for meningo-myelo-radiculitis possibly secondary to ventriculitis as in CMV infection. The role of VZV in the pathogenesis of some AIDS-related vasculitides seems also very likely.

    Notes: Abstract We describe an infant with symptomatic perinatally-acquired cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection manifested by fever, anaemia, thrombocytopenia and hepatosplenomegaly. This infant developed recurrent episodes of severe ascites during which the virus was isolated from his urine. This rare hepatic manifestation of neonatal CMV infection has, to the best of our knowledge, only been reported twice in aborted fetuses with intrauterine systemic CMV infection.

    Notes: The α-particle energy loss method (AEL) has been implemented in situ to monitor film thickness during growth by molecular beam epitaxy. For InP and GaAs substrates recoil implanted with α-particle emitters, we have been able to measure thickness and composition of deposited GaAs, AlGaAs and InGaAs in real time. The AEL method yields in situ real time results comparable in accuracy to those obtained by ex situ scanning electron microscope and high-resolution x-ray diffraction measurements. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Genetic diversity among Fusarium moniliforme isolates was analysed using vegetative compatibility group (VCG) and random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) techniques. In the first experiment, RAPD was used to analyse a set of 43 isolates collected from different corn growing areas in Israel and the US. The isolates were assigned to 27 different VCGs. Thirty-two RAPD haplotypes were also detected by analysing 48 polymorphic bands. RAPD could differentiate all the VCGs, except in two cases where two VCGs were assigned a single RAPD haplotype. In six cases, however, molecular variation was detected among isolates belonging to the same VCG. Cluster analysis of the RAPD data showed a very good agreement with the VCG grouping, e.g. isolates of the same VCG were always closely clustered by the molecular data. In a second experiment, 63 isolates of Fusarium moniliforme were collected from six corn lines growing in a single corn field. Extensive genetic variation was observed among the isolates: 42 different VCGs and 37 RAPD haplotypes were identified. Once again, RAPD patterns could differentiate nearly all the VCGs. However, in four cases, two different VCGs were grouped into a single RAPD haplotype, while in another three cases, isolates of the same VCG could be differentiated by distinct molecular haplotypes. The variation data was used to gain insight on the population structure and the patterns of genetic variation among geographical locations and within a single field. Hierarchical gene diversity analysis of the RAPD data indicated that most of the genetic variability (81%) was distributed within corn lines in the same field, suggesting that RAPD haplotype, or VCG frequencies, were not significantly affected by the plant genotypes grown in this experiment. Most of the RAPD band combinations did not display significant gametic phase disequilibrium, suggesting that active recombination might be occurring in the field. Our results indicate that by using a small number of primers, similar resolution was obtained by RAPD and VCG analysis, respectively. RAPD analysis is however, simpler to perform and its sensitivity in genotyping individuals within Fusarium moniliforme can be increased by analysing more primers, enabling a more detailed population genetic analysis of this important pathogen.

    Notes: A new approach for modelling epidemics caused by fungal foliar plant pathogens is presented. The model is described by a system of differential equations, and is simple enough to allow a qualitative analytical study of the main epidemiological factors that determine the rate of disease progress during a single growing period. The model was analysed and compared with Vanderplank's basic equations of plant disease development and some of Jeger's models. Results of qualitative investigation of the model, and close similarity between simulated and observed dynamics of disease development, show that this new approach may be used to compare and analyse some foliar fungal disease epidemics in more detail than formerly.
