Description / Table of Contents: Macroscopic Failure Criterion for Metal-to-Metal BondsIn order to judge the load limit of metal-to-metal bonds, one needs, on one hand, characteristic values of strength which can obtained by experimentation with a defined state of stress, and on the other hand, failure criteria which determine stressability caused by any multidimensional state of stress in comparison to the strength characteristics obtained.Starting from the theory of the plastic potential for polymers, a failure criterion is formulated for metal-to-metal bonds. It is assumed that the adhesive-bonded joint is an homogeneous isotropic body. The evalution of some of the experimental results given in the literature on the subject show that the failure criterion for quasistatic loaded metal-to-metal bonds can be applied.

Description / Table of Contents: Bestimmung von J-Integral R-Kurven für Hastelloy X und Inconel 617 bis zu 1223 K unter Anwendung des PotentialsondenverfahrensFür Hastelloy X (T = 308 K und T = 1223 K) und für Inconel 617 (T = 308 K, 473 K, 673 K, 873 K, 973 K, 998 K, 1023 K, 1048 K, 1073 K, 1173 K und 1223 K) wurden die J-Integral R-Kurven bestimmt.
Notes: For Hastelloy X (T = 308 K and T = 1223 K) and for Inconel 617 (T = 308 K, 473 K, 673 K, 873 K, 973 K, 998 K, 1023 K, 1048 K, 1073 K, 1173 K, and 1223 K) the J-integral R-curves have been determined. For Hastelloy X at 308 K the multispecimen technique has been compared with the single specimen method using the potential drop technique. At 1223 K Hastelloy X delivered a low J0-integral value. Inconel 617 showed a smooth increase in J0 with increasing temperature, up to 998 K; above this temperature even for large loadline displacements only blunting behaviour has been observed. The same tendency has been found for the evaluation of the tearing modulus. With increasing temperature the tearing modulus increases. In the temperature range from 998 K to 1223 K the tearing modulus increases by about one order of magnitude. For both alloys the onset of stable crack growth in most cases is earlier than the load maximum is reached in the load versus load-line displacement curves.

Notes: Strengths of a composite when determined by actual tests shows a lower value than those obtained through theoretical estimation by applying the simple rule of mixtures. This discrepancy has been attributed largely to the presence of defects in the composite like debonding, porosities, cracks etc. To establish a design criteria to a more practically closer strength values an empirical formulae is presented. The formulae accounts for defect level upto 30%. The results were obtained through computational facilities using IBM (360/44) Computer. The drop in strength with increasing defect level is shown to occur and the effect is more predominant when defects are more in fibres than in matrix.

Description / Table of Contents: Behaviour of Gas Cylinders Periodically Pressurized with Hydrogen at Low FrequenciesIn the course of a three years research project, commercial gas cylinders manufactured from quenched and tempered steel 34 CrMo 4 had been the subject of internal hydrogen pressurization cycles under near service conditions.Since hydrogen facilitates the initiation and propagation of fatigue cracks, the low cycle fatigue life of these cylinders is generally reduced as compared to identical tests in oil. Following the results of parallel experiments applying acoustic emission techniques and from the fractographic analysis of the fracture surfaces produced, a model has been presented describing the individual steps taking place in the development of a hydrogen induced vessel failure.Apart from the role which is played by service stresses and metallurgical factors, the results lead to the conclusion that the possible development of a failure is basically controlled by the state of the internal surface of the cylinder. From the experimental results it is possible to predict the safe service life of frequently filled hydrogen cylinders and pressure vessels. Provided that they are manufactured according to current specifications and guidelines, these cylinders and pressure vessels can be expected to operate safely over long periods.

Description / Table of Contents: Quality Assurance in the Production of Nodular Cast Iron According to the Meehanite Process - with Particular Regard to Valves for the Chemical IndustryThe application of nodular cast iron for valves, specially for the chemical industry, has attracted particular interest. This is due to the fact that manufacturing methods have reached a high degree of perfection at reasonable costs. Interest is focused on ductile grades GGG-35.3 and GGG-40.3 per DIN 1693 and, with restrictions, on GGG-40 and GGG-50. Maintenance of the desired level and close tolerances of material properties in the casting is the main condition for industrial application. The most important factors in this respect are the manufacturing methods and quality assurance systems employed. Regarding these factors the Meehanite process offers optimum conditions. For control purposes it is important that the properties of the separate test bar and of the casting correspond. Tests carried out on a casting taken from routine production of a Meehanite foundry prove that this is possible. For approval of a foundry as a supplier of castings of this kind the application of a suitable manufacturing method and the presence of a reliable quality control system should be the main criteria.

Notes: The chromatographic behavior of some hydrocarbons and some of their nitro derivates after preconditioning with solvent vapors has been investigated. After preloading with cyclohexane or hexane an improved separation of some sample pairs is observed. Furthermore, inversion of Rf values takes place. The preloading of the reversed-phase plates permits utilization of mobile phase with higher water content, thus leading to a significant shortening of developing time.

Notes: Considerations of TLC process optimization have been based on the thermodynamic theory of adsorption from multicomponent solvents using experimental and theoretical RM1, 2 = f (Φ1) relationships. It was found that a relationship exists between the Az parameter (log k1,2∞ where k1,2∞ is the partition coefficient of the substance chromatographed) of the above theory and pKa values of substances as well as the solubility parameter δ of the mobile phase components. Analysis of the Az values of substances shows that a slight variation therein is associated with lower selectivity of chromatographic separation.

Notes: It is shown theorectically that the classical formula for calculating the theoretical plate number from squared first central moment, tms2, and second central moment, σ2, according to ntheor = tms2/σ2 is valid only when the capacity ratio, k approaches infinity. The general relation between the classical experimental HETP value, H = L/nmtheor, and the underlying true theoretical plate height, ΔL, is found to be\documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$ {\rm H' = }\frac{{{\rm L(\sigma ')}^{\rm 2} }}{{\overline {\rm t}_{{\rm ms}}^{\rm 2} }}{\rm = }\frac{{{\rm 2}\overline {\rm D} _{\rm m} }}{{\overline {\rm u} }}{\rm + }\overline {\rm k} \frac{{{\rm 2}\overline {\rm D} _{\rm s} }}{{\overline {\rm u} }}{\rm + \Delta L}\frac{{\overline {\rm k} }}{{{\rm 1 + }\overline {\rm k} }} $$\end{document} when (σ′)2 is the total column contribution to band broadening, L is the column length, Dm is the average diffusion coefficient of the sample component in the mobile phase, Ds is its value in the stationary phase, and u is the average linear velocity of the mobile phase. The mobile phase displacement, as well as the mass exchange process, is assumed to be continuous, but the application of the plate concept conditions leads to a mass balance equation that can be interpreted as belonging to a modified discontinuous plate model. The contributions 2Dm/u and k 2 Ds/u from longitudinal sample diffusion in the mobile and stationary phases, respectively, are consistent with the assumption that the processes are statistically independent, although the common solution technique of the differential equations does not take full account of this independence.

Notes: Whereas the immobilization of apolar silicone phases is essentially understood and mastered, the corresponding treatment of even moderately polar phases remains problematical. Upon attack by peroxide radicals, these phases respond by forming active transformation products rather than by bonding to the support surface or to neighboring molecules. OV-1701 is at present the most polar stationary phase which can reasonably be immobilized. An essential feature of the practical procedure is the prevention of film breakage after coating the inert support surface and before immobilization. Two ways of overcoming this problem are presented.

Notes: Recent developments in the preparation of capillary columns by persilanization of the glass surfaces have resulted in highly inactive, heat-stable columns. With this type of column certain steroid hormone classes can be analyzed without derivatization; these include the 17-keto steroids, 11-oxo compounds, estrogens, and progesterone metabolites. It has been found that good quantitative analysis calls for non-vaporizing, on-column injection, as normal vaporizing injection results in breakdown of thermolabile compounds such as estriol and 17-OH progesterone metabolites. The gas chromatographic method described was used to obtain urinary steroid profiles.

Notes: In order to justify its classification as a “high resolution” technique, HPLC should show an improvement in efficiency by a factor of at least 10, should be easily achievable with separation times of less than 1 h, preferably in the reversed phase mode. This is accomplished by coupling three 25 × 0.46 cm columns packed with 5 μm spherical ROSiL-C18-D silica gel. Details of the method and some typical chromatograms are given.

Notes: Isocratic conditions are described for the separation, identification and quantitation of selected phenolic antioxidants and related compounds by high performance liquid chromatography on a reverse phase microparticulate ODS column. Mobile phases containing 0.05 M lithium perchlorate in aqueous methanol are used. Three detection systems: ultraviolet; fluorescence; and electrochemical detectors are connected in tandem. The use of these three detection systems in sequence as additional means for separation, identification, and quantitation is demonstrated. Other advantages of the system include speed of analyses and improved detection. The Ḱ values and detector responses at 2 settings per detector for 12 compounds are reported.

Description / Table of Contents: On the Economic Situation of CompositesSome million tons of composites are yearly produced and sold in the Federal Republic of Germany and Western Europe, respectively. This shows that this type of material, often called a newcomer, has since long taken its place in production and in the market. While the sale of metallic and non-metallic materials has declined recently, composites will find an expanded field of interest under the aspects of raw materials and energy saving, reliability, and performance and will thus further increase their market share.

Description / Table of Contents: The Determination of Oxide-Metal Interface EnergiesUnder the long term aim to obtain general conclusions about the wettability of solid oxides by liquid metals phase boundary energies between solid uraniumdioxide and liquid metals have been investigated for a number of systems. It was found, that at the metals melting points- the phase boundary energies become approximately identical (γUO2-metal melt ⋍ 1.676 ± 0.142 J/m2) with respect to an engineering approach for all metals and- the respective contact angles (φs 〉 90°) point out no wettability.By proper extrapolation procedures it is also possible to estimate the temperature coefficients of the phase boundary energies for solid UO2-metal melt systems, for which the temperature functions of the phase boundary energies have not been measured.

Description / Table of Contents: Application of the Unloading Compliance Method in Fracture Toughness Measurements of a Quenched and Tempered SteelThe application of the J-integral leads to a considerable reduction of material needed for establishing toughness data. The number of specimens is further reduced by measuring the crack resistance curve in a single specimen. This requires monitoring the crack extension during the experiment. A comparison of several methods showed that the unloading compliance technique is particularly suitable for that purpose. This method was applied for measuring the toughness as a function of location in a large forging of a steel 25 NiCrMo 14 5. Good toughness values (about 200 MPam1/2) with little scatter were found over the whole cross section of the forging.

Notes: The mechanism of anodic dissolution and hence of corrosion of W in alkaline solutions (NaOH, Na3PO4) has been investigated by measuring anodic Tafel lines by the galvanostatic technique, and calculating both the Tafel slope b and the effect of pH on anode potential as diagnostic criteria for the mechanism. The quasi-equilibrium principle of Kabanov, Burstein and Frumkin for all reactions preceding the rate-determining (rd) step has been used to calculate the concentration of intermediates as a function of potential. Two mechanisms have been tested with this principle:(i)the first involving the formation and dissolution of nonstoichiometric and stoichiometric surface oxides, and(ii)the second deals with the formation and dissolution of hydroxide species.

Description / Table of Contents: Influence of Microstructure on Mechanical Properties, especially Fatigue Properties of Titanium Ti 6 Al 4 V AlloyMechanical properties, fatigue behaviour and fracture toughness, as well as micro- and macrostructure in longitudinal and transverse direction of rolled 100 mm square bars and 88 mm thick plates of the Ti-6 Al-4 V titanium alloy were investigated after different heat treatments in the α + β-field at 700°C and 955°C, as well as in the β-field at 1010°C preferably with subsequent air cooling.Annealing at 700°C with the highest content of α-phase resulted in the highest strenght while heat treatments increasing the β-content lead to lower strength. Higher strenght values are reached by water quenching than by air cooling. Directionality of mechanical properties just as of notched stress rupture decrease at higher annealing temperatures and decreasing α-contents. Fracture toughness increases at rising β-content.The high cycle fatigue strength values determined in pulsating tension testing varied between 545 and 300 N/mm2 depending on heat treatment, specimen position and mill product. Annealing at 700°C and high α-content led to higher values than heat treatment in the upper α + β-field with lower α-content. On the other hand, transformed Widmannstätten type structure with small primary grain size does not reduce the level of fatigue strength in comparison to annealing at 700°C.However β-annealing moves the transition from the decreasing to the horizontal part of the Woehler-Line of HCF strength to lower cycle numbers. Heat treatment and the resulting microstructure indicate, independently of product form und specimen position, the higher α-contents in equi-axed form to yield higher LCF strength than lower α-content in elongated transformation structures. Medium LCF values are obtained by β-annealing for Widmannstätten type structures and small grain size.

Description / Table of Contents: Application of Semiconductor Temperature Sensors in Material TestingSo called Negative Temperature Coefficient (NTC) resistors whose electrical conductivity increases rapidly with increasing temperature have arisen as a by-product of semi-conductor development. This change in electrical resistivity makes the NTC-resistor  -  also known as Thermistor  -  suitable for exact temperature measurement. Because of its high resolution and small dimensions, it can be successfully used where maximum accuracy is required and point measurement is necessary. Possible applications are in material testing etc.

Description / Table of Contents: Creep Tests on the Al-Alloy AlMg 4,5 MnCreep tests on the Al-alloy AlMg 4,5 Mn were conducted at temperatures between 20°C and 250°C and a loading time up to 50 000 hrs. The testing material was delivered as sheet 20 mm thick and the condition was G31 DIN 1725. The objectives of these tests were to determine characteristic values for creep limits (Rp0,2/t and Rp1/t) and for creep strength (Rm/t).Creep limits and creep strength of AlMg 4,5 Mn are up to 100°C higher than those of comparable materials such as AlMg3, AlMg5 and AlMg2 Mn. However, this advantage will be lost by a strong decrease of the creep limits above 100 °C. Furthermore, it could be proved, that the creep strength Rm/5×104 is already at 100°C far below the 0,2-limit from the tensile test. Therefore, creep values should be applicated already at this temperature, which is contrary to details pertaining to the technical code.Observing fracture deformation showed an increase in the testing period of up to 150°C, and a decrease at and above of 200°C in elongation and reduction of area, but not in terms of embrittlement. Additionally, a different characteristic of kind of fracture could be found in a temperature and time limited area. This indicates a simultaneous metallurgical process.

Description / Table of Contents: Metal-Metal Adhesion under Dry Sliding FrictionStudies of various theories of formation and operation of metallic adhesion show, that adhesive friction-and wear-mechanism essentially is a physical-chemical problem. Metallic adhesion is to be regarded as a result of interplay of all thermic, electric and oxide interactions between atoms of interface of two joined metal surfaces. Those for the general mechanical engineering relevant mechanical metal properties as well as the applied load are to be looked at only as additional parameter of influence. They cannot exclusively take the measurement of adhesive reaction.

Description / Table of Contents: Temperature Measurements on Cyclically Loaded MaterialsTechnical materials are polycrstalline and microscopically very inhomogeneous. During fatigue loading the strain amplitudes are of different magnitude at randomly distributed sites and cannot be measured directly.A simple statistical computer model enables the engineer to better understand the distribution possibilities of elastic-plastic deformation in the cyclically deformed material. An improved understanding of the fatigue strength and the fatigue process in metallic materials can be obtained from the measurement of the heat arising in the material from dissipation. Examples are given of the use of temperature measurements in a notch for the determination of crack initiation at high testing frequencies and on smooth cylindrical specimens of the exact determination of the specific amount of heat per cycle for fatigue analysis.

Notes: Passivation of commercial grade tin (99.5%) was studied in 0.1 M KCl, KBr and KI solutions using the potentiodynamic technique involving cathodic and anodic polarization at various scan rates. While low scan rates (0.1 mV/sec) lead to the complete deterioration of the anode in chloride solutions, higher scan rates of 1 and 5 mV/sec lead to the appearance of two anodic peaks. These peaks disappear at still higher rates (10 mV/sec). In bromide solutions, two anodic peaks appear with scan rates of 1 and 5 mV/sec, and only one peak is observed with 50 mV/sec. A white precipitate is formed in both chloride and bromide solutions during anodic scanning. No gas evolution (O2, Cl2 or Br2) could be detected up to anode potentials of 3-4 V (SCE). At scan rates of 1 mV/sec and higher values, pitting does not occur, and thick anode films are formed. The film is gray in chloride solutions, and yellowish gray in bromide solutions. Values of the corrosion potential Ecor are recorded for the forward and reverse scanning. The corrosion cd Icor is calculated both by the Tafel extrapolation procedure and by the linear polarization technique. The latter gives more accurate results. In Cl- and Br- solutions, the first anodic peak associated with passivation is more anodic than the equilibrium potentials for the tin/tin oxides or hydroxides. Passivation is explained as a result of the formation of the sparingly soluble salts Sn(OH)Cl, Sn(OH)Br which appear both in the precipitate and in the anode film. The passivating films are constituted at least partially of these basic salts, and contain a proportion of the oxides and hydroxides of Sn. From the effect of scan rates on the characteristics of the anodic peaks, it appears that the formation of thick anode films is governed by the diffusion kinetics for porous films. Of the three possibilities considered as explanations for the second anodic peak (oxidation of impurities, oxidation of halides to oxyacids, and structural changes in the film) the latter appears to be the most probable one.Thick anodic films are not formed in iodide solutions (scan rates 1, 5, 10 mV/sec), and the anode surface remains very bright. Dense evolution of I2 occurs during anodic polarization, and apart from I2 which dissolves in solution, the latter remains clear. Only one peak is observed in the forward anodic scanning. The polarization resistance technique gives Icor = 0. Thermodynamic calculations show that I3-, HIO, IO-, HIO3, IO3-, HIO4, and IO4- occur in 0.1 M KI solutions at potentials less anodic than the potential of the anodic peak (1.32 to 1.37 V, vs SCE). This peak potential is more anodic than the quilibrium potential for I2 evolution.

Notes: Various methods of building idealized S-N lines were described and analyzed. The slope coefficient k may be considered approximately constant for similar specimens made from similar materials with similar heat treatment undergoing loading cycles of the same type. The stress concentration factor KT of the specimen affects in general the slope coefficient of the S-N line, but in the case of limited variation of KT (only moderate KT or only high KT) the slope coefficient may be assumed nearly constant. A general approximation method was proposed where the construction of the S-N line takes into account the material properties, the notch, surface and size factors and the type of loading.

Description / Table of Contents: Crack Growth in Steel under Fatigue Conditions. The Influence of Research Parameters and Microstructure on Crack Growth RatesCrack growth rates in a plain carbon eutectoid steel were measured. The microstructure and the stress ratio were variied. The experiments were conducted in air and in a 5% NaCl-H2O solution. The effect of the research parameters, atmosphere and microstructure on the constants m and C in the PARIS equation were determined. Possible mechanisms for the increase of crack growth rates due to a corrosive medium, an increase of stress ratio R, and/or the mechanical strength of the steel by specific heat treatment are presented.

Notes: Different metallic glasses of 40-45 μm thickness were explosively cladded onto metals. The explosive data (amount of explosive and detonation velocity) were changed systematically in a wide range in order to obtain different collision parameters. It was found, that under conditions of explosive welding metallic glasses undergo plastic deformation in different manners. Up to a collision point velocity of vk = 2300 m/s metglas reveals only a shear band deformation mode, leading to many fractures at the plane interphase between metallic glass and metal. At higher velocities a homogeneous type of deformation is observed. The interphase is of wavy nature then.

Notes: GC headspace analyses of various aromatizing herbs have been compared with those relating to the essential oils, obtained by steam distillation, of the same plants. In this way it was possible to establish the most significant differences between the composition of a herb flavor and that of its essential oil. In particular, we observed some very volatile compounds in the headspace samples which were absent from the essential oil; these components may make an important contribution to the herb flavor. The identification of these substances is still in progress.

Notes: The development of improved high resolulation glass capillary columns for separating the alditol acetates of neutral and amino sugars is described. Different capillary column treatments were evaluated for their activity toward amino sugar derivatives and for their effect on the efficiency of the completed column. The simple two-step procedure of leaching with aqueous hydrochloric acid and dynamic coating with SP-2330 was found to produce efficient and inert columns.

Notes: Glass capillary gas chromatography has been investigated as a method for the analysis of nitrated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (nitro-PAH) using both splitless and on-column injection techniques. The nitro-PAH showed good chromatographic performance and thermal stability under the GC conditions used. Retention times and response factors of several nitro-PAH were compared to those of conventional PAH.Simultaneous flame ionization and thermionic nitrogen selective detection was used to facilitate identification of nitro-PAH in complex samples. The feasibility of the method is demonstrated on two samples of commercial carbon black. Besides 1-nitropyrene several isomeric dinitropyrenes have been identified.

Notes: A quality control procedure for Fused Silica Capillary Column Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectroscopy (FSCC GC/MS) was tested and shown to produce similar response factors at five Spectroscopy (FSCC GC/MS) was tested and shown to produce similar response factors at five laboratories. The average relative standard deviation (RSD) of interlaboratory response factors for fifty three compounds of environmental interest determined at each laboratory at nominal injected weights of 20, 100, and 200 ng was found to be 18.9% for four of the five laboratories which participated in this work. These data demonstrate that similar response factors can be attained in routine GC/MS measurements when adequate quality control is maintained.

Notes: The total length-based second moment contribution from longitudinal sample diffusion in both phases on a column, σc,2D, is derived by adding individual partial differential contributions to a partial differential equation accounting for the longitudinal diffusion processes only. Although each diffusion-dispersed sample part is equilibrated between two phases, the resulting σc,2,D (= 2Dmtm + 2Dsts) can be interpreted as the sum of two independent contributions in accordance with the variance addition rule. (Dm and Ds are the mean diffusion coefficients and tmand ts the mean residence times of the sample in the mobile and stationary phases, respectively.) The same σc,2D expression is derived from the random walk model of Giddings by treating the diffusional process in each phase as statistically independent of the other processes. Under these conditions the broadening contribution from longitudinal diffusion in the mobile phase is shown to be independent of the velocity profile.

Notes: A simple method is described for the quantitative determination of organochlorine pesticides and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB's) in water at the sub-ppb level. A micro gas-phase extractor advantageously replaces other preconcentration and purification techniques. The extract is analyzed by capillary gas chromatography without further enrichment. The recovery at the ppb level was nearly 100% for organochlorine pesticides and more than 80% for PCB's. The complete procedure including sample preparation, steam distillation-extraction, and capillary gas chromatographic analysis is carried out in less than four hours.

Notes: Among the methods of quantitation commonly used in chromatography, the internal standard may be considered as the most useful and accurate; however, use of internal standards in liquid chromatography with UV and fluorometric detectors runs into considerable difficulties because the response factors may differ from each other by several orders of magnitude. Under these conditions, the search for an IS with a response factor similar to that of the analyte and adequately resolved from other peaks may prove very tedious. The deferred standard concept, already used in process and laboratory gas chromatography, is proposed as a solution; its definition, details of instrumentation, operation, and results are described in this paper. The material presented demonstrates its ability to solve this specific problem. In addition, use of the deferred standard approach is seen to save time and money.

Notes: Different stationary phases were prepared by mixing a series of inorganic salts with dimethylsiloxane polymer (SE-30) and then tested by capillary gas chromatography. It was demonstrated that the polarity (as evaluated by measurement of Rohrschneider constants) of the mixed stationary phases, which is inferior or equal to that of a medium-polar OV-25 phases, reached even lower values than SE-30 alone. The influence of NaF, NaCl, NaBr, AgNO3, and other inorganic salts on the polarity of capillaries is reflected by a better resolution and shorter retention time of cis/trans isomers of fatty acid methyl esters (FAMES) as well as positional isomers of triglycerides.

Notes: High performance liquid chromatography of saturated, monounsaturated, diunsaturated, triunsaturated, cyclopropenoic (malvalic and sterculic) and cyclopropanoic (cis-8,9-methylenehexadecanoic and dihydrosterculic) fatty acids was performed with their methyl esters. All separations were carried out with two types of reversed phase columns, the eluent consisting of an acetonitrile/water mixture. The effect of water was studied in the range 0-15%. The best separation was obtained with acetonitrile/water (85:15 v/v). Quantitative results indicated that the detection limits depended upon ultraviolet wavelength and in the present study were 4 ng of methyl sterculate and 125 ng of methyl dihydrosterculate at 195 nm.

Notes: Successful packing of high quality HPLC columns is dependent upon a number of parameters. Especially when using slurry packing techniques, the absence of conglomerates of particles in the slurry and the wettability of the particles are important. The method described in this paper fulfills these conditions, imparting a ξ potential to the 5 and 10 μm silica particles by applying a pH gradient. This results in repulsive forces between the particles and hence leads to a well-controlled monodisperse situation. Water is used as a slurry and displacement liquid; it combines the advantages of excellent wetting properties and non-toxicity.
