    Description / Table of Contents: Morphological structure and formation of cracks in crystallizing macromolecular materialsAfter a brief survey of present-day knowledge of morphological structures (laminations, fibrels and spherulites), the author discusses the tests carried out to obtain some knowledge about the internal crack system of macro-molecular materials with the aid of permeation and diffusion measurements on terylene films as a function of the degree of crystallisation and of temperature. It is found that, with careful thermal and mechanical treatment, it is quite possible to avoid the formation of major continuous cracks and a corresponding degree of corrosion proneness.Cracks may occur if the crystallisation process is continued for too long a time at too high temperatures. In this case, microscopic examinations or X-ray crystal density methods may be applied. The last section deals with tests carried out to explore the formation of cracks in coarse-crystalline iso-tactic polypropylene, caused by wetting agents. Cracks are found to occur partly already during crystallisation, and partly during the subsequent cooling; they occur in the direction of the spherulite radii as well as along the grain boundaries.
    Notes: Nach einem kurzen Überblick über die heutigen Kenntnisse der morphologischen Strukturen (Lamellen, Fibrillen und Sphärolithe) werden die Versuche besprochen, und mit Hilfe von Permeations- und Diffusionsmessungen an Terylenfilmen in Abhängigkeit vom Kristallisationsgrade und der Temperatur einen Einblick in das innere Rißsystem won makromolekularen Werkstoffen zu bekommen. Es zeigt sich, daß man bei schonender thermischer und mechanischer Behandlung eine gröbere durchgehende Rißbildung u. entsprechende Korrosionsanfälligkeit durchaus vermeiden werden kann.Kristallisiert man zu lange bei zu hohen Temperaturen so tritt Rißbildung auf. Hier kommen dann mikroskopische Untersuchungen sowie solche der kontinuierlichen Röntgenkleinwinkelstreuung in Frage. Im letzten Abschnitt werden Versuche über die durch Netzmittel induzierte Rißbildung in grobkristallinen isotaktischen Polypropylen besprochen. Risse entstehen teils schon während der Kristallisation, teils beim darauffolgenden Abkühlen sowohl in Richtung der Sphärolithradien wie entlang der Korngrenzen.

    Description / Table of Contents: The cathodic protection of steel pipes in water and gas mainsMore and more use is being made cathodic protection for underground under-water pipelines. One may choose between protective anodes and protective current. The choice of method depends on the type of pipeline, and on the type of soil. Initially, the application of this method was confined to welded pipelines without branches which had good electric conductivity but could, at the same time, easily be insulated against the soil. Later on, it also became possible to solve the problems militating against the use cathodic protection in the case of ramified pipelines. With the aid of three examples, it is shown that cathodic protection can be used economically with large as well as medium-sized networks, and also f the partial renewal of an existing network.
    Notes: Der kathodische Schutz von unterirdischen oder unter Wasser verlegten Rohrleitungen findet immer weitere Verbreitung, wobei man die Wahl zwischen Schutzanoden und Schutzstrom hat. Die Wahl der Methode ist abhängig von der Art der Rohrleitungen und des Bodens. Die Anwendung war anfänglich auf unverzweigte Leitungen beschränkt, die verschweißt waren und daher gute elektrische Leitfähigkeit mit leichter Isolierbarkeit gegenüber dem Boden vereinigten. Im Laufe der Entwicklung konnten auch die Probleme gelöst werden, welche die Anwendung des Kathodenschutzes im Falle verzweigter Leitungen erschweren. An Hand von drei Beispielen wird dargelegt, daß der kathodische Schutz sowohl bei großen als auch bei mittleren Leitungsnetzen und auch bei teilweiser Erneuerung eines bestehenden Netzes mit guter Wirtschaftlichkeit angewendet werden kann.

    Description / Table of Contents: Corrosion and scale incrustation problems with the hot water supply of the City of Reykjavik, IcelandIn Iceland, the greatest possible use is made, by the population, of the hot water springs as natural sources of heat. Depending on the origin of the water and its distribution, the pipes show a degree of corrosion, and of scale incrustation on their inside walls, ranging widely from ‚zero‘ to ‚heavy‘.To prevent the damage caused by corrosion and incrustation, the water, corrosion products and incrustations have been thoroughly examined.Insulation is essentially determined by silicates, magnesium constituents and boron compounds. It must also be noted that, in corrosive waters, the content of sulphur in sulphide form is twice as high as in water of low aggressivity. In connection with the research carried out by Mrs. L. Holzapfel, Ph. D., concerning the silica content of plants and the influence on this reaction of FeS, it was concluded that the corrosion of the pipe walls represents a similar process where the sulphur content, in conjunction with the iron, prevents the deposition of the silica in an insoluble crystalline form as it had been found from investigations into the properties of the water and the structure of the incrustations that Icelandic thermal water are able to form protective layers if their incrustations are in crystalline form.When it was found that the protective layers also contained boron compounds, special investigations were carried out which showed that the boric acid content of non-corrosive thermal waters is ten times higher than that of corrosive waters. The formation of a silicate layer is made possible by the fact that these waters have a higher content of boric acid and magnesium constituents whilst the quantity of inhibiting sulphur compounds is greatly reduced.
    Notes: Heißwasserquellen auf der Insel Island werden von den Bewohnern in möglichst großem Umfang als natürliche Wärmequellen ausgenutzt. Je nach Herkunft des Wassers und je nach seiner Verteilung werden in den Rohren starke oder keine Korrosion und keine oder starke Ablagerungen auf den Rohrinnenwandungen mit entsprechenden Zwischenstufen beobachtet.Zur Verhütung der durch Korrosion und Steinablagerung verursachten Schäden wurden eingehende, umfangreiche Untersuchungen der Wässer, der Korrosionsprodukte und der Ablagerungen vorgenommen.Für die Bildung der Ablagerungen sind im wesentlichen Silikate, Magnesiumkomponenten und Borverbindungen von Bedeutung. Zu beachten ist ferner, daß der Gehalt an Sulfid-Schwefel in den korrodierend wirkenden Wässern doppelt so hoch ist wie in denen, die kaum angreifend wirken. Im Zusammenhang mit Untersuchungen von Frau Dr. L. Holzapfel über den Einbau von Kieselsäure in Pflanzen und den Einfluß auf diese Reaktion durch FeS wurde geschlossen, daß im Falle der Rohrinnenkorrosion ein gleichartiger Vorgang stattfindet, wobei der Schwefelgehalt in Verbindung mit Eisen die unlösliche, kristalline Ablagerung der Kieselsäure behindert. Aus den durchgeführten Untersuchungen über die Wasserbeschaffenheit und den Aufbau der Ablagerungen folgte nämlich, daß isländische Thermalwässer Schutzschichten bilden können, wenn ihre Ausscheidungen in kristalliner Form erfolgen.Der Nachweis, daß auch Borverbindungen in den Schutzschichten vorhanden sind, führte zu besonderen Untersuchungen mit dem Ergebnis, daß die nicht korrodierend wirkenden Thermalwässer einen 10fach höheren Borsäuregehalt als die angreifenden Wässer aufweisen. Die Ausbildung einer Silikatschutzschicht wird dadurch ermöglicht, daß diese Wässer einerseits einen höheren Gehalt an Borsäure and Magnesiumkomponenten aufweisen und andererseits die Menge der hemmenden Schwefelkomponenten stark verringert ist.

    Description / Table of Contents: Using auto-radiograms for the investigation of phenomena on metal surfacesFor the examination of boundary layer phenomena on solid surfaces, radio-active isotopes can be used with advantage. In this connection, the local distribution of radiating matter can be ascertained with the aid of auto-radiograms.The present article deals with the use of auto-radiograms for studying the separation and adsorption phenomena on metal surfaces. Special attention is paid to the influence of grain boundaries, displacements and orientations of the crystallites as well as the influence of macroscopic roughness on the adsorption of aqueous electrolyte solutions. The tests were carried out with β radiating isotopes 147 Pm and 204 T1.The auto-radiograms show that any zones of disturbance and any inhomogeneities on a solid metal surface are the first to be covered with radio-active substance. It is, for instance, found that increased adsorption takes place at grain boundaries and points of displacement. It is also shown that the separation is influenced by the orientation of the crystallites. The test results give rise to the conclusion that auto-radiograms can also be used for the clarification of other boundary layer phenomena.
    Notes: Zur Untersuchung von Grenzflächenvorgängen an festen Oberflächen werden mit Vorteil radioaktive Isotope eingesetzt. Die örtliche Verteilung des strahlenden Materials kann man dabei mit Hilfe der Autoradiographie feststellen.Die vorliegende Arbeit beschreibt die Verwendung der Autoradiographie beim Studium von Abscheide- und Adsorptionsvorgängen an Metalloberflächen. Insbesondere wird hier der Einfluß von Korngrenzen, Versetzungen und Orientierungen der Kristallite sowie makroskopischen Rauhigkeiten auf die Adsorption aus wäßrigen Elektrolytlösungen behandelt. Die Versuche wurden mit den β-strahlenden Isotopen 147Pm und 204T1 durchgeführt.Aufschlußreiche Autoradiographien zeigen, daß jede Störstelle und jede Inhomogenität an einer festen Metalloberfläche bevorzugt mit radioaktiver Substanz belegt wird. So beobachtet man z. B., daß an Korngrenzen und Versetzungen eine verstärkte Adsorption auftritt. Ferner wird gezeigt, daß die Orientierung der Kristallite die Abscheidung beeinflußt. Die Versuchsergebnisse weisen darauf hin, daß auch andere Grenzflächenvorgänge mit der Autoradiographie geklärt werden können.

    Description / Table of Contents: The influence of frequencies on the impedance of inhibitor films on iron in acidsApparatus is described for the exact measurement of the impedances of oxide and inhibitor films on metal surfaces and for the simultaneous determination of the film resistances and capacitances of inhibitor films as a function of the a. c. frequency. It was found that inhibitor films on metals show exactly the same behaviour as oxide films. The resistance theory of the inhibitor effect, formulated by W. Machu, has again been confirmed.
    Notes: Beschrieben wird eine Apparatur zur exakten Messung der Impedanzen von Oxyd- und Inhibitorfilmen auf Metalloberflächen und zur gleichzeitigen Ermittlung der Filmwiderstände und Kapazitäten von Inhibitorfilmen in Abhängig keit von der Wechselstromfrequenz. Fest-gestellt wurde, daß sich Inhibitorfilme auf Metallen vollkommen gleichartig verhalten wie Oxydfilme. Die Widerstands-theorie der Inhibitorwirkung won w. Machu wurde erneut bestätigt.

    Description / Table of Contents: The aggressivity of the soilThe aggressivity of the soil can only be determined by a number of tests. On the strength of the research work carried out so far (by Starkey and White, von Wolzogen-Kühr, and Maurin) the author suggests that aggressivity should be defined on the basis of the variations of the pH value, of the conductivity and of the redox potential as a function of the degree of dilution (with a moisture content ranging from 15 to 90 per cent.). In this connection, aeration is ignored, since the soil is apt to become alternately aerobic and anaerobic as a result of seasonal fluctuations.
    Notes: Die Aggressivität des Bodens läßt sich nur rnit Hilfe mehrerer Bestimmungen definieren. Auf Grund der bisherigen Versuche (Starkey u. White, von Wolzogen- Kühr, Maurin) schlägt der Verfasser vor, die Veränderungen van pH, Leitfähigkeit und Redoxpotential mit steigender Verdünnung (Wassergehalte 15 bis 9O%) als Grundlage für die Definition der Aggressivität zu benützen. Die Belüftung wird hierbei nicht berücksichtigt, da ein Boden im Laufe der Jahreszeiten sowohl aerob als auch anaerob werden kann.

    Description / Table of Contents: Reaction between hydrazine and iron oxidesExperience has shown that the use of hydrazine for the removal of dissolved oxygen may entail certain practical difficulties, mainly due to the fact that hydrazine is able to reduce the higher iron oxides under suitable conditions. The magnetite thereby formed is, e. g., able to form cathodic areas which may accelerate the corrosion of the surface to be protected.In the present investigation, the attempt has been made to ascertain the effect of the thermal pretreatment on the reactivity of a precipitated ferrihydroxide. In this connection, chemical and radiographical methods have been used to study the decomposition of the hydrazine as well as the reduction of ferric-iron and the crystallisation of the ferric-hydroxide. The results show, inter alia, that under the test conditions here encountered, the greatest magnetite formation takes place at those ferric-hydroxide products which had been dried between 150 and 250° C. It was also found that all the agents become completely inactive if the pre-treatment temperature exceeds 350° C. Finally, it was also found that the effect of the products in accelerating the decomposition of the hydrazine likewise depends on the pretreatment temperature. This relationship, however, is difficult to define so that a complete explanation cannot yet be given. It is, however, clear that the reactivity of the products decreases as the degree of crystallisation, i. e. the pretreatment temperature, increases.
    Notes: Die Erfahrung hat gezeigt, daß die Verwendung des Hydrazins zur Entfernung des gelösten Sauerstoffs gewisse praktische Schwierigkeiten mit sich bringen kann. Hauptsächlich beruht dies darauf, daß Hydrazin die höheren Eisenoxyde unter geeigneten Verhältnissen reduzieren kann. Der dabei gebildete Magnetit kann z. B. kathodische Gebiete bilden, wodurch die Korrosion der zu schützenden Oberflächen beschleunigt werden kann.In dieser Untersuchung wurde versucht, die Einwirkung der thermischen Vorbehandlung auf die Reaktivität eines gefällten Ferrihydroxyds zu bestimmen. Dabei hat man den Zerfall des Hydrazins sowie die Reduktion des Ferrieisens als auch die Kristallisation des Ferrihydroxyds mit chemischen und röntgenographischen Methoden studiert. Die erhaltenen Resultate zeigen z. B., daß unter den verwendeten Versuchsbedingungen die größte Magnetitbildung an solchen Ferrihydroxydpräparaten stattfindet, die bei 150 bis 250° C getrocknet waren. Weiter hat man gefunden, daß alle Präparate völlig inaktiv werden, wenn die Vorbehandlungstemperatur 350° C übersteigt. Schließlich zeigen die Resultate, daß die den Zerfall des Hydrazins beschleunigende Einwirkung der Präparate auch von der Vorbehandlungstemperatur abhängig ist. Diese Abhängigkeit ist jedoch schwer zu überblicken, so daß eine vollständige Erklärung noch nicht zu geben ist. Es steht aber fest, daß die Reaktivität der Präparate mit steigendem Kristallisationsgrad, d. h. mit steigender Vorbehandlungstemperatur, kleiner wird.

    Description / Table of Contents: Titanium as a material for the chemical industryA synopsis is given of the corrosion behaviour of non-alloyed titanium in pure and polluted inorganic acids, in organic acids and compounds, and in chlorides, based on the results of laboratory tests and practical experience.The corrosion behaviour of normal commercial heat-resistant titanium alloys is compared with that of non-alloyed titanium and of corrosion-resisting titanium alloys with 20 and 30 per cent. Mo and with 0.2 per cent. Pd. The applications of titanium in the chemical industry are surveyed, and photographs of apparatus used in different applications are reproduced.
    Notes: Es wird ein Überblick über das Korrosionsverhalten von unlegiertem Titan in reinen und verunreinigten anorganischen Säuren, in organischen Säuren und Verbindungen, in Chloriden anhand von Ergebnissen aus Laboratoriumsversuchen und Betriebsergebnissen gegeben.Ein Vergleich des Korrosionsverhaltens der handelsüblichen warmfesten Titan und den korrosionsbeständigen Titan-Legierungen mit 20 und 30% Mo sowie mit 0,2 % pd ist angestellt. Es werden ein Ausblick über die Anwendung von Titan in der chemischen Industrie gegeben und Bilder von Apparaturen verschiedener Anwendungsbereiche gezeigt.

    Description / Table of Contents: The corrosion behaviour of gold platingMany earlier attempts at replacing the well-known gold doublé by galvanic gold plating have always ended in failure. Admittedly, galvanic gold plating have a number of considerable advantages (uniform thickness, no inclusions or shrinkage cavities, no uncovered zones, simple process); on the other hand, the fine gold coatings formerly produced also have a number of drawbacks (low hardness, undesirable colour, presence of pores, and in many cases poor adhesion). These drawbacks have prevented the general introduction of this methode. Quite recently, it has become possible to produce faultless galvanic gold coating of considerable hardness, and in different colour shades. By means of a subsequent heat treatment at about 400° C, the coating partly diffuses into the base metal and thus becomes inseparably integrated with it. The base metal preferably used for this purpose is a multi-alloyed bronze which is tempered by the annealing process. The properties of the materials thus obtained, which is known as galvano-doublé, are at least equal to those of the old rolled doublé and are, in some respects, and especially from a corrosion chemical point of view, considerably superior; moreover, the production process is much simpler and cheaper. The favourable showing is mainly due to the uniform thickness of the coating and its fine-grained structure.
    Notes: Viele ältere Versuche, anstelle des altbekannten Gold-Doublé galvanische Vergoldungen anzuwenden, sind stets gescheitert. Galvanische Goldüberzüge haben zwar erhebliche Vorteile (gleichmäßige Dicke, keine Einschlüsse und Lunker, keine ungedeckten Stellen, einfaches Herstellungsverfahren), aber die früher erzeugten Feingoldüberzüge haben auch verschiedene Nachteile (geringe Härte, unerwünschte Farbe, Poren, oft schlechtes Haftvermögen). Dadurch wurde ihre allgemeine Einführung verhindert. In jüngster Zeit ist es gelungen, fehlerfreie galvanische Goldüberzüge von beträchtlicher Härte und in verschiedenen Farben herzustellen. Durch eine nachfolgende Wärmebehandlung bei etwa 400° C diffundiert der Überzug teilweise in das Grundmetall und wird dadurch mit ihm untrennbar verbunden. Als Grundmetall wird dabei mit Vorteil eine Mehrstoffbronze verwendet, die durch den Glühvorgang vergütet wird. Das so erhaltene Material, als Galvano-Doublé bezeichnet, ist dem alten Walz-Doublé in allen Eigenschaften zumindest gleichwertig, in mancher Hinsicht, vor allem korrosions- chemisch, beträchtlich überlegen und seine Herstellung ist sehr vie1 einfacher und billiger. Vor allem ist die überall gleichmäßige Schichtdicke und die feinkörnige Struktur des Goldüberzuges für das günstige Verhalten verantwortlich.
