    Notes: The paper presents the “Thermophysical Profiles” of selected plastics and discusses their significance in correlating the mechanical properties with the molecular and crystalline structure of these polymers. The profiles were obtained with a new instrument, by imposing a fixed, forced elastic vibration on the speciments' surface and by recording continuously the energy absorbed by the specimens through a temperature range from -200°F to +500°F The profiles locate the first and second order transition points of the test materials (defining, thus, the temperature limits of their use) and indicate the change in modulus with temperature in the viscoelastic region of the polymers. Profiles of the following materials are discussed, low and high density polyethylene, polypropylene and PVC films and unfilled samples of cast epoxy and polyester resins.

    Notes: The basic requirements for optimization of filament-wound pressure vessels are a high strength-to-density ratio of the fiberglass-resin composite and an arrangement of the glass fibers in such fashion that each fiber carries, at a given pressure, the same constant load throughout the cylindrical portion as well as the end closures. The basic relations governing the isotensoidal design are derived, and the ideal shape of the end closure is defined. The relative merits of geodesic and “in-plane” wrapping are discussed. Structrual efficiencies accomplished in several practical applications are reviewed.

    Notes: Studies of capillary extrusion measurements using an Instron rheometer show that certain types of high density polyethylene exhibit a discontinuity in the shear stress/shear rate curve. This behavior which is separate and distinct from the phenomenon of melt fracture is caused by a change in the flow regime. It is manifested by oscillation of the recorded load while the rheometer piston is operated at a constant rate. Therefore, this behavior has been termed “oscillating shear phenomenon”. The location and magnitude of the fluctuations are functions of the molecular parameters of the polymer as well as the melt temperature, capillary geometry, and other rheometer variables. Evidence is presented which indicates that the change in flow regime could result from the orientation of the melt as it enters the capillary.

    Notes: Solution-grown crystals of polyethylene may reach lateral dimensions large enough for optical microscopy. Interference microscopy represents, in this case, a suitable method of observation of morphology and defects as well as quantitative determinations. The double-beam interference method used in the Baker type microscope has been applied to determine refractive indices and lamellar thicknesses. The Nomarski double-beam interferometer has been used for hot-stage experiments. Multiple-beam techniques involving silvering of crystal surfaces and using an ordinary light microscope for observation have been developed. The applicability of the different types of interference microscopy to polymer research is illustrated in a series of representative photomicrographs of polyethylene.

    Notes: Carefully controlled experimental techniques were used to study the effect of variations in bulk E glass surfaces on bound life and wetting. Bond life (stability of the bound in the presence of moisture) was determined visually as the time required for hot water to remove an epoxy resin coating from the glass surface. Wetting was determined by the captive bubble technique. Both properties were significantly affected by variations of the glass surface. The bound life studies emphasized the importance of the coupling agent in promoting bound stability in a hot water environment. The only example of the glass surface not treated with a coupling agent that had a satisfactory bound life was the alkali-deficient glass surface prepared by acid leaching. The surprisingly poor bound lives of the degassed and freshly cleaved (high energy) glass surfaces indicated that the wet strength retention of laminates would be poor when prepared by instantaneously applying epoxy resin without a coupling agent to the glass fibers directly as the fibers are formed. Cleanliness and surface and surface roughness were the only two variables found that promoted wetting. This discrepancy with respect to cleanliness indicated that wetting was not the controlling factor for bond life.

    Notes: The character of the residues from pyrolytic decomposition of organo-phosphorus polymers has suggested the use of such materials in ablative materials required for heat shields in reentry vehicles, rocket nozzles, etc.Phosphorus-containing phenolic resol and novolak resins were prepared by condensing di(p-hydroxyphenyl)-phenyl-(phosphine oxide) with aldehydes. The mechanical properties of the basic phosphorus-phenolics were improved by internal plasticization through chemical reaction of the resin in the early stages of polycondensation with acrylonitrile-butadiene copolymers (NBR) and with silences and slicone resins. To improve the compatibility of the phosphorus phenolics with NBR copolymers, the phosphorus-containing phenolics were initially etherified by “butanolization” in order to decrease their polarity.The preparation of coatings and molded discs from some modified and unmodified phosphorus-containing phenolic-resin formulations is described. Preliminary observations relating to the properties of the trial products are reported.

    Notes: The deterioration of plastics by biological agents of considerable concern not only to the U. S. Department of Defense but to the national economy as a whole. In the recent past the great developments in oceanography have emphasized that marine biodeterioration of plastics requires much more investigation. Biodeterioration of plastics is characterized according to that caused by microbiological agents, macrobiological agents, and marine biological agents. the important past and recent knowledge in each category is summarized.

    Notes: The definition of filtration resistance is re-examined in view of the new theory (12) of the variation of flow rate with respect to distance through a filter cake. In the new definition it is shown that the filtration resistance depends upon slurry concentration as well as applied pressure. A correction factor modifying the specific filtration resistance previously defined by Ruth (5, 6) is developed.Where the hydraulic pressure variation within a cake is known, methods are presented for calculating the variation of flow rate with respect to distance and the change of filtration resistance in relation to slurry concentration.

    Notes: In the rotary drum crystallizer, solids are deposited from a molten liquid mixture on the cooled surface of a drum. Rotation of the drum carries the solids from the melt to a scraper blade which removes the crystal deposit in a liquid free, convenient form. The object of this investigation was to obtain data on the separation of binary mixtures over a range of melt temperature, drum coolant temperature, drum rotational rate, concentration of impurity in the liquid, and agitation of the liquid. Four systems were studied: naphthalene-benzoic acid, beta-naphthol-naphthalene, p-xylene-m-xylene, water-sodium chloride.The experimental results show that separation improved with increasing agitation, increasing coolant temperature, decreasing drum speed, and decreasing liquid impurity. For the naphthalene-benzoic acid system, the major system studied, the maximum stage efficiency was 96%. The results indicate that the vigor of agitation and the drum coolant temperature are the two most important variables which affect the separation. It was possible to calculate the rate of solid deposition with heat transfer data.The rotary drum crystallizer appears to be an effective device for industrial separation of organic chemicals.

    Notes: Turbulent mixing of a dye solution injected at the center of a pipe was studied by means of a new light probe developed for the measurement of concentration fluctuations were made both along the axial distance and across the pipe. The concentration fluctuations persisted longer at the center-line region than anywhere else; this suggested the use of the decay of intensity at the center as an upper limit. Approximately 99% of the initial intensity decayed within 7.5 ft. (30 L/d). The concentration spectra along the axial distance indicated that the eddies initially undergo a scalar energy cascade. Because of the huge difference in the kinematic viscosity and molecular diffusivities the concentration spectra extend much farther toward high wave numbers than the velocity spectrum. Apparently a state of imbalance resulted between the supply of small eddies and their dissipation; this was marked by the appearance of a small hump in the spectra. The phenomenological approximations of Corrsin and of Beek and Miller could be used for the practical problem of predicting the decay of the intensity of the concentration fluctuations or mixing in the pipe geometry studied.

    Notes: The adiabatic, evaporating, two-phase flow of steam and water in horizontal pipe including the critical flow was successfully described by a system of nonlinear differential equations which include different phase velocities, fluid acceleration, wall shear forces, interface shear forces, and mass and energy transfer between the phases. The solution of the differential equations by the method of Runge-Kutta was facilitated with a high-speed digital computer. Experimental data were obtained which included void fraction measurement by X-ray attenuation and showed that the theoretical equations described the complex flow phenomena to ± 10% when radial temperature gradients were small. Design charts based on the numerical solution of the theoretical equations are presented for rapid evaluation of the flow variables for the system steam-water including critical flow for inlet pressures from 30 to 150 lb./sq.in.abs., mass flow rates per unit area from 300 to 1,000 lb./sq. ft. sec., and L/D ratios from 25 to 1,000. The critical flow is defined as the maximum flow rate for a given pressure at the point of initial vaporization and L/D ratio.

    Notes: The desorption of five sparingly soluble gases from water into air in a packed tower was studied at five different flow conditions. At 25°C. these systems represent a range of liquid-phase diffusivity from 1.4 × 10-5 to 6.3 × 10-5 sq. cm./sec. The mass transfer coefficient was found to vary as the 0.5 power of liquid-phase diffusivity in all cases. This result, obtained through the variation of diffusivity alone, is in agreement with the predictions of penetration theory and strongly suggests a penetration mechanism based on molecular processes and independent of eddy processes during a surface lifetime. A discussion of the nature of the diffusion and surface renewal process in flow over packing is included.

    Notes: Experimental studies were made of fog formation in free jets containing glycerine and dibutyl phthalate. Visual and photographic observations showed that condensation took place near the nozzle in the mixing zone between the jet and the ambient air. Fog formation began at a well-defined location downstream from the nozzle depending on the initial velocity, temperature, and concentration of vapor. The location could be changed by inserting solid bodies or by adding foreign nuclei to the mixing zone. Measurements were made of mean temperature and concentration profiles in the mixing zone with noncondensable gases. These compared well with the predictions of turbulent boundary-layer theory. Calculations were made of the supersaturation to be expected in the case of glycerine. Downstream of the point where condensation first occurred fog filled most of the region where the calculated supersaturation was above unity. Based on the experimental evidence a mechanism is proposed for condensation in a free jet.

    Notes: A method is presented for using an adiabatic reactor to study the kinetics of reactions of gases on solid catalysts. The method is based on measurement of the steady state axial profile of temperature or composition in a specially designed adiabatic packed bed reactor. Reaction rates are calculated from these measured profiles by graphical differentitation. The method is applicable for multireaction systems and for any type of kinetic behavior.The method was demonstrated by an experimental study of cumene cracking an silica-alumina catalyst at 420° to 480°C. The measured reaction rates are in satisfactory agreement with results obtained by other investigators who used isothermal reactors. Areas of application of the adiabatic method are suggested.

    Notes: The purpose of this study was to develop the use of semibatch operation of a recirculation reactor in kinetic studies. Ethylene hydrogenation over a supported copper catalyst was studied experimentally. In semibatch operation one of the reactants is fed at the rate necessary to hold the total pressure in the reactor constant. In ethvlene hydrogenation the reaction rate is directly equal to the feed rate, and the kinetics can be studied at constant partial pressure of either of the reactants. Since ethane is inert, this technique permitted the study of reaction rate as a function of one variable at a time.Although ethylene hydrogenation has been studied extensively, there is not general agreement regarding the kinetics over a copper catalyst. The results are themselves of interest because they indicate the reasons for the apparently conflicting data in the literature.

    Notes: To test the importance of visco-elastic properties of non-Newtonian fluids in an oscillatory system of low frequency the dynamic characteristics of a series of non-Newtonian fluids were studied in oscillating manometers. The manometer fluid behavior was simulated on a digital computer by numerically integrating the axial component of the equation of motion. In the simulation cone and plate steady state rheological data were represented mathematically with the Sisko rheological model. Good agreement between simulation and experimental data was obtained. This agreement implies that steady state rheological models can be utilized in the description of unsteady state non-Newtonian systems where the characteristic period of the system is many times greater than the relaxation and retardation times of the fluid. When this characteristic period approaches these times, then rheological models which incorporate viscoelastic terms explicitly probably should be used.

    Notes: Four different flow regimes may be identified during transport of dilute suspensions of solid particles through horizontal pipes by liquids in turbulent flow as the velocity is varied. The regimes may be characterized by the distribution of solids in the channel. In two of the regimes the bulk of the material is immediately adjacent to the bottom of the channel and is clumped up either into transverse waves (dunes or islands) with a reproducible periodicity or into longitudinal waves (long stria). The definition of the other two regimes is somewhat more arbitrary but may qualitatively be described as heterogeneous or homogeneous flow. Extensive studies of the conditions under which transverse and longitudinal waves occurred, when combined with results of previous studies, showed that all four of these flow regimes may be conveniently represented on a single diagram in which the terminal-settling velocity divided by the friction velocity and the Reynolds number on particle diameter and friction velocity are the coordinates. Because the particle Reynolds number based on the terminal-settling velocity can be uniquely defined as an additional parametre on such a diagram the particular flow behavior for any given combination of system and particle characteristics can be readily determined.

    Notes: The kinetics of reduction of ferrous oxide with hydrogen were studied in a 1½-in. diameter isothermal batch fluidized reactor. The effects of mass velocity and pressure on the reduction path were investigated over the ranges 5.3 to 19.2 moles/sq.ft.hr. and 1.3 to 5.4 atm. at 1,000° and 1,300°F. The results are correlated by means of instantaneous oxygen balances on the assumptions that there are no oxygen concentration gradients in the solid phase, that the distribution of residence times for the gas flow is represented closely by assuming complete mixing, and that the reduction rate is controlled at the oxide-metal interface. The rate of reduction increased with increasing pressure and mass velocity. An excellent correlation was obtained for the program at 1,000°F. At 1,300°F. sintering and grain growth of the product layer complicated the reduction process, and a correlation was not obtained. Application of the results to the design of commercial fluidized-reduction processes is discussed qualitatively.

    Notes: The formulation of a solution method for the equilibrium stage model equations involves six major decisions. Each of these decisions is analyzed and the proper choices indicated. One major contribution of the analysis was a clearer understanding of why any one solution method is not convergent on both distillation and absorber types of problems. A correct solution method is formulated for absorption and extraction problems. This method when programed in parallel with a distillation method works all but a few unusual problems with a minimum of computer time. Another contribution was the development of a procedure for solving the concentration or component rate matrix equations which avoids the computational difficulties of the Lewis-Matheson and Thiele-Geddes methods; that is the procedure avoids truncation error build up, does not require mesh points, works equally well for any number of feeds and side streams, and handles nondistributed components in the same way as distributed ones.

    Notes: Continuous foam fractionation has a great deal of promise as a chemical engineering separation technique; however more information is needed concerning the effect of operating variables upon the separation which may be obtained. An experimental investigation is presented of the influence of temperature, of liquid residence time, and of the position of feed introduction upon the foam fractionation of the ethylhexadecyldimethylammonium bromide-water system. The study involves three series of experiments and ninety foam separation runs. For a given air rate and feed stream concentration and rate, the drain stream concentration and rate increase linearly with temperature and the foam concentration and enrichment ratio are increasing functions of temperature. Equations derived from a multiple linear regression analysis enable the calculation of the drain stream concentration and rate from the feed concentration, air rate, and temperature.Based upon experiments involving the variation in liquid residence time by two methods, changes in solution height have no influence upon the separation, indicating the rapid achievement of equilibrium. Changes in feed rate and air rate show that the volume of air employed per unit volume of feed treated is a prime variable affecting the separation.Positioning the feed inlet at the solution-foam interface, compared with feeding into the solution, provides a significant increase in drain rate and decrease in drain concentration. Moving the feeder higher into the column of foam results in a continued decrease in drain concentration, but in the passage of the drain rate and foam concentration through maximum values at a height corresponding to approximately the midpoint of the column of foam.

    Notes: Solutions to the equations of multicomponent mass transfer may be written as matrix generalizations of the solution to the equivalent binary mass transfer equation when intial and boundary concentrations are constant, there are no homogeneous reactions, and all physical properties including the diffusion coefficient matrix are concentration independent.The analogue of the binary mass transfer coefficient is a multicomponent mass transfer coefficient matrix which depends only upon the mass transfer coefficients of the equivalent binary system and the diffusion coefficient matrix of the multicomponent system.When interphase transfer takes place, the inverse multicomponent mass transfer coefficient matrices of each phase are additive. Their sum yields an overall resistance to mass transfer which is the inverse of the overall multicomponent mass transfer coefficient matrix.

    Notes: The inherent uncertainty of the critical heat flux in saturated pool boiling has been inconclusively debated for some time. In an effort to ascertain this uncertainty a series of 234 tests was conducted at atmospheric pressure with saturated water outside horizontal, a.c. heated, 0.234-in. O.D., A-nickel tubes in an open 6 × 6 × 9-in. deep pool. Approximately fifty tests were conducted with each of four test sections which were protected from physical burnout by a detector circuit which terminated the applied current before the wall temperature exceeded approximately 450°F. The maximum relative uncertainty in the derived values of critical heat flux was ±3%.For all the tests the minimum, average, and maximum critical fluxes were 0.201 × 106, 0.436 × 106, and 0.596 × 106 B.t.u./hr. sq. ft., respectively, and the average critical wall superheat was 41°F. The surface roughness of the test sections remained essentially unchanged during the program. The data show that there is an inherent uncertainty or scatter band in the critical heat flux under conditions of minimum surface variability, and that solely hydrodynamic theories of burnout do not fully represent the phenomenon, since surface condition can constitute a significant influence.

    Notes: The results of two investigations are reported. Air bubbles were formed at orifices submerged beneath each of fourteen liquids. The surface tension of the liquids varied from 17.8 to 72.4 dynes/cm., and the viscosities ranged from 0.436 to 713 centipoise. In the first investigation, air bubbles were formed at orifices at various angles of inclihation. Orifice diameters ranging from 0.159 to 0.396 cm. were employed. The air-flow rate was varied from 0.1 to 100 cc. (at standard conditions)/sec. The results were obtained with two different apparatuses by three independent investigators.In the second investigation, the effect of the velocity of a liquid flowing past a horizontal, submerged orifice on the formation of air bubbles was determined. Liquid velocities ranging from 0.34 to 2.5 cm/sec., which spanned the region of laminar flow, were employed. Orifice diameters ranged from 0.15875 to 0.3175 cm., air-flow rates from 0.5 to 100 cc/sec. (at standard conditions).It was found that the bubble formation observed in each of these investigations could be correlated with the physical variables of the system by the application of Newton's second law of motion to the bubble at the instant just prior to its release from the orifice.

    Notes: A correlation of turbulent tube-flow friction factors for non-Newtonian polymer solutions, based upon the fluid property τ1/2; defined in Part I, has been found to represent data taken on seven solutions of Natrosol hydroxyethylcellulose in ½- and 1-in, I.D. smooth tubes, with an average accuracy of 10.8%. Also, for these seven solutions, this correlation gives somewhat more accurate predictions of the point of transition into turbulent flow than are made by the Ryan-Johnson stability theory.The correlation must be considered only provisional, however, because it does not simplify to the limiting case of extremely dilute solutions. Plausible extensions based on models of steady-flow non-Newtonian viscosity behavior, and other possible correlation schemes utilizing viscoelastic fluid properties, are briefly discussed.

    Notes: The calculus of variations, dynamic programing, and Pontryagin's maximum principle all are methods for optimzing serial decision processes, the kind associated with multistage operations having no recycle or bypass. Addition of recycle to a serial process makes it cyclic, and branching structures can be built up by connecting serial ones. The concept of cut state makes possible the decomposition of cyclic and branched systems into serial ones solvable by serial procedures. Under favorable circumstances cut states can be directed to their optimum values by efficient optimum seeking methods, which is not possible for ordinary state variables. These method are worthwhile only for loops having at least three stages, and the treatment of converging branches is more complicated than for diverging ones. Visualization of the various system structures is aided by functional diagrams. Definitions and nomenclature are developed for continued research on optimization of macrosystems by serial techniques.

    Notes: With the development of relatively inexpensive control computers and on-stream analyzers, on-line dynamic optimization of nonlinear, multistage systems has become more feasible. Investigators have been concerned with the static optimization and control of single-stage and multistage systems, but few have considered the optimization of a multistage system whose behavior is nonstatic owing to stochastic changes in its input and environment, and whose optimal control policy is time varying.This paper looks at the problem of dynamic optimization as it applies to the analysis of a multistage continuous stirred-tank reactor system. A variational approach, in which the physical restraints on the manipulatable variables are included by a parametric representation, led to a bang-bang, sampled-data, optimal control law, or an equivalent analytical expression for continuous optimal control. Inclusion of the inequality relationships, specifying amplitude constraints on the manipulatable variables by a penalty function, resulted in a set of nonlinear Euler-Lagrange equations specifying the control law.

    Notes: The point of inversion of a water-in-oil type of dispersion to an oil-in-water type is investigated for several water-oil systems by studying the volume ratios of the phases in relation to their physical properties. The point of inversion for each system of an immiscible organic liquid and water and organic liquid mixture and water is obtained by varying the phase-volume ratios and determining the type of dispersion after complete mixing. The effects of temprature, interfacial tension, and density are found to have no correlation generally applicable to the systems studied. A volume-viscosity relationship is found to exist within limits. This correlation is that the phase-volume ratio at the point of inversion is equal to the square root of the ratio of teh viscosities of the respective phases at the interface. The theoretical aspects of this relationship are studied along with its limitations.

    Notes: Unusual heat transfer phenomena have been observed between solid surfaces and fluids near their thermodynamic critical point. To understand better these phenomena temperature and velocity profiles and local heat transfer coefficients were measured for turbulent flow of carbon dioxide in a tube at 1,075 lb/sq. in. abs. (pc = 1,071). The results indicate a severe flattening of the radial temperature profiles, a maximum in the velocity profile between the wall and the tube axis, and a maximum in h' when the bulk fluid temperature passes through the transposed critical temperature.The results can be explained qualitatively by considering the variation with temperature of thermal conductivity near the tube wall and specific heat in the turbulent core.

    Notes: The linearized equations of diffusion in a multicomponent system with flow and chemical reaction are shown to reduce to a set of equivalent binary diffusion equations.The concentrations and fluxes in a multicomponent system are described by linear combinations of appropriate solutions to the binary diffusion equation for steady and unsteady diffusion and convective mass transfer, laminar or turbulent.The rate of transfer of each component in a nonreacting n component system is a linear combination of the n-1 independent driving forces with proportionality constants which depend upon the multicomponent diffusion coefficients and appropriate binary mass transfer coefficients, while the concentration profile of each component is a linear combination of appropriate binary concentration profiles with proportionality constants which depend upon the multicomponent diffusion coefficients and the characteristic displacement from equilibrium of each component.The linearized theory is exact for small changes in concentration but needs further testing when the concentration changes and fluxes are large.
